Today we’re going to talk about subwoofer placement and pressurization because a subwoofer is really a pressurization device and you’ll remember from my past videos that I always talk about how pressure and reflections in rooms are the two main areas you have to be concerned about.
Well in today's video you'll learn:
1. Why low frequency energy needs to be evenly distributed throughout the room,
2. Why you should always elevate your subs off the floor and
3. Why there are different ideal sub locations depending on number of subs, room usage and size (and I'll show you some examples in graphic form).
So enjoy the video and as always please let me know if you have any follow up questions.
Thanks
Dennis

Probably the best video I've ever seen regardin sub placement. Quick tips: it's really all pressure wave maths, so DON'T put it in the corner on the ground, lift it up 10-12 inches, and aways about 20 inches from the walls, but unevenly (one wall 20" and one 10-15") this only general stuff to keep in mind it made my sub stop droning and overamplifying some frequencies. Just miles ahead of what I experienced. Also, the bigger the room, the more space you get to fill with balanced pressure. Thank you!

I got a big self constructed horn, made for the corner with a bass guitar speaker. He needs contact to bottom and wall to have effectively the double size. He stands in quite a small room. This sounds hard and clear. The big speaker is fast and has hardly to move to do his job. He goes only down to 55 Hz. He has his own transistor amplifier. It will never be loud because the higher amp is 2 X EL86 valves. This is enough for me.

Hi Dwayne, Sub woofers are low frequency producing devices. Every room size and volume has different requirements when it comes to positioning within those room sizes. Look for positions that produce quality not quantity. Most sub woofers in the marketplace are about quantity and not quality. Our testing reveals that the cabinet will produce as much "sound" as the driver. A quality manufacturer of sub woofers will spend as much time and money on the cabinet ("room") design and construction as they do the electronics and driver.

If you simply use a cardioid subwoofer array you can solve most room boundary issues. A central end fire with 3 small woofers will always work assuming the room is large enough. Having set up many giant sound systems ranging from JBL to D&B almost everything can be solved with placement and DSP in those systems. But for some reason "audiophiles" just ignore it. Always trying to get the largest soundfields possible... Nearfield is best. Compromise key my speakers are considerably smaller than a room the size I have would require to really get the giant soundfield and perfect sound everywhere. But in my small sweet spot... It's as good as I will ever want. I only have one diffuser. It's about 6ft x 4ft and 7" to hollow following the RPG Inc skyline pattern. I skipped the lowest blocks since it's hanging over fiberlass absorbing walls. My basement was cold.. so I insulated it and made it absorptive. Not sure what the coefficient and the range but it's overkill for sure. My basement is now my music room. I listen on one side of a false wall and I play on the other side. I would love to find a fault other than my cheap gear.

Hi! Nice videos, very interesting. I was hoping you could help me with a problem i'm encountering in my own basement studio. The problem is that the sub frequencies (under 80 hz) sing around in my studio. I think its best and most purely described as a Synthesizer where you open the release, so instead of muting after playback it will have some decay(release). I'm really hoping its a solvable acoustics issue and not a construction issue. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance, Stefan

Raising a low frequency device off the floor will improve room resolution and frequency response. The platform should also absorb energy. Placing low frequency absorption as close to the source as possible is ideal. Our sub platforms do both of these functions. www.acousticfields.com/product/subwoofer-platform-absorber/

J, Increasing the surface area of any low frequency driver will increase output into the room. The difference from going from a 10" driver to a 12" driver is about 2 dB more energy into the room. Small rooms usually will not benefit from more low frequency sources. More low frequency energy will produce more unwanted modal pressure issues.

Hi Find Lestar Sub woofer number and positioning depends upon room volume and usage. For your room volume, one is sufficient if it is two channel listening. With a home theater system, two would be better, provided you had the necessary low frequency management in place. Without knowing much about usage and existing room treatment it is difficult to generalize. W, Thank you for your response and question. With a small room like yours, we need to not use any low-frequency producing device. Technically with a room such as yours, you must keep energy below 50 Hz. out of the room completely since it will not fit within your dimensions. Use small speakers that cross above 50 Hz.

Start with placing your sub on a wheeled platform that can be easily moved. You will be moving and listening over time and to different source material. Place the sub in room center and then move left and right. Stay away from the walls. Move the sub forward and back from center point. Every move of 12" must be met with listening to different sources for at least 30 minutes.

Hi Anthony, Always remember that no matter how much energy you put into a room to compensate for poor room dimensions and lack of the correct type, amount, and positioning of low frequency management technology, you can not achieve the desired room response. Presonus T10 Sub is 1.5’ from front wall directly on floor (rubber feet) off center by a foot. Monitors are calibrated with pink noise to 82dB each, sub is calibrated to 79dB with pink noise. A a crossover at 100Hz splits the signal between the monitors and sub. I have a 12 to 18dB boost 100Hz and under according to Sonarworks. That seems like a very large room boost to me. Is it? Sonarworks cuts the low end boost with their corrected EQ, and I feel like I have hardly any sub anymore. Maybe I just need to get used to it. It does sound clearer. Next, what exactly should we look for when moving the sub around? Just less room boost and less low mud? I work on electronic/bass-heavy music. Thanks for the vid!

@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 4 жыл бұрын
U, The graph is only to illustrate concept. Subs are low-frequency generating devices. They produce sound pressure issues within a room. Don't think of them as speakers with directional energy. They are pressure producing devices that radiate energy in many directions. As a pressure producing device, there are places within a room of a specified volume where their physical placement and position will produce less pressure issues.

Acoustic Fields Always love your videos and advice but this whole vaulted ceiling deal scares my to death. I have an unfinished addict (misspelled intentionally.. ) that I'm saving cash to build my dream HT/music room in. The good news is that it will be from the ground up, so I'm gathering ideas and advice prior to the build to minimize issues. Theoretically, it will basically measure 17 x 22 x 9. This can only happen if I have 6 ft high vertical walls and then the ceiling will follow the angle or pitch of the roof to the horizontal 9 ft ceiling. Makes for a nice man cave aestetically but acoutically to my non engineering trained mind, I am adding at least 2 more surfaces to "my box" and therefore, more problems/challenges with respect to optimizing the room for the best listening experience. I say at least because to get the 22 ft length, the front wall (screen) will also follow the 6 ft scenario mentioned above, so there will be that additional angled surface to consider. I could give up a couple feet of length there by building a false wall but I also see a scenario where I could recess my fronts into that false wall and then I'd be bring a couple more surfaces back into play. Yada, yada, yada.. I intentionally went on this rant to illustrate how nerve racking this whole deal is to me...and I haven't even driven the first nail or fastened a screw yet. I fully intend to take advantage of your room analysis service when the trigger time comes, but am I way out in left field with this room profile I'm considering? Is it gonna create some over the top problems that I can avoid by considering other/better room layouts based on the raw space I have to work with?
@stevegalante
@stevegalante 8 жыл бұрын
So that means that to fit a 30 Hz wave into a room I should have 37.66 ft of (free) space in front of the source, right ? If so, how is "fitting" a wave into a space different from actually "hearing" it ? Thanks !
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, Energy oscillates in waves, so you will be able to feel the energy but your room may not let you "hear" definition and separation that is possible with proper room dimensions / volume / treatment. Room dimensions and the lack of proper treatment will produce modal issues which will smear and blur definition and separation.
@stevegalante
@stevegalante 8 жыл бұрын
So (since I believe 90% of control rooms don't have those free 37.66 ft...) what you mean is with proper treatment you can feel/hear those 30Hz even though theoretically the wavelength doesn't fit ?

@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 9 жыл бұрын
66ddot Elevating a sub woofer requires calculations. You need to know room size and volume, lowest and highest pressure level played below 100 cycles, along with a host of other variables. The platform will need to support the weight/height ratio to avoid tipping. With most sub woofers weighing over 100 lbs., easy of movement and installation along with safety, must be taken into consideration.Since the platform is connected mechanically to the sub woofer, it is a perfect scenario for using a pressure activated absorption technology. With diaphragmatic absorption that close to the source of pressure, one can reduce unwanted pressure at the source or the sub woofer itself before it gets in the room and has time to "grow", by building in that technology into the platform. Adding our activated carbon technology to the diaphragmatic platform increases absorption performance exponentially, especially in that frequency critical range with subs from 30 - 50 Hz. I, Using multiple subs to smooth out low-frequency response room curves is an expensive proposition. Each additional sub will only have a + 1 dB - + 1.5 dB improvement, if that. There is no substitute or band-aid for small rooms and their inherent lower frequency issues. You must choose the proper room size and volume to match the usage and then treat the remaining issues with the proper treatment technology.

@@AcousticFields I have many times got about +5dB (average) when adding a second identical sub. (And almost the same when going from two to four, but this time mainly only below 40Hz or so.) But this naturally requires time aligning the subs (either with equal distance placement or delay with some prosessor). And even thou I mostly avoid corner loading and 1/4 lenght (for sq reasons) I also do not place subs in the middle (1/2 lenght) of the room. Maybe putting the sub in the middle of the room (null point) equals the pressurization but it also gives very little additional dB gain. And yes - a small room is a problem for good, even and low reaching bass but only if the walls are stone. I just measured about 11' x 12' (height 8') room with all wood walls, floor and ceiling. It has two 18" IB subs (AE brand) behind the main speakers and the fr is very even (+/-2dB from smoothly raising target curve) starting from 5Hz to 120Hz (without any EQ, only 2. order LR low pass). Here below 35Hz the gain from the second sub was 5,5-6,0dB. Between 35Hz and 120Hz the gain was between 4,0-5,5dB. The measurement instruments were high enough quality (mic Eartworks Audio, mic amp/ADC RME UFX and sturdy micstand and high end cables). Thank you for making the interestind video and pointing out that it is good to use more than one subwoofer. All the best wishes.

The more i think about this, the more this makes sense. The trick really is to start thinking them as pressure devices, as wavelengths really are that long. Since any sub is a spherical sound source and putting them on any plane changes that to hemispherical, the logical conclusion is to position that plane in front of the listener. My logic is that it creates an even pressure wave, going on single direction, the first reflection point is the boundary line, it is the same for all units etc. Will not work if the front wall is not vertical thou so for once we can take advantage of 90 deg corners.. ;) It just makes sense. I need to plot that someday.

Baffling that so many "acoustics" companies are so far behind in the science of multi-sub and EQ. I suggest reading AES submissions by Todd Welti as a starting point. A properly setup multi sub system greatly reduces the need for LF bass trapping while also opening up more placement options. 4 corner loaded subs with EQ in a rectangular room produces incredibly good seat to seat consistency with excellent LF coupling.

The purpose of corner loading is to minimize nodes (phase cancellations from boundary reflection) and modes (boosts from the same boundary reflections) by focusing them into the lowest octave (hopefully below the playback of the recording) and others above the pass band of the subwoofers due to close proximity to the walls. If it's a well built structure, and the LF radiating devices are of high fidelity, such as a sealed 2nd order subwoofer that has a natural 12 db/ octave roll off, placing them within the corners will provide the smoothest frequency response in smaller rooms. Yes, this method increases efficiency too, which is good for dynamic range and lower distortion, reducing localization and power compression. If it's too loud, just reduce the volume. Boom with a corner loaded sub is usually due to a 4th order bass reflex design or bandpass design, which should never be used in medium to small rooms if Hi-Fi is the goal. Those networks are best for large rooms where room gain and boundary interaction are not factors. If your room is less than 3000 cubic feet, go sealed, not ported for the sub design if music accuracy (definition and timber) are important attributes.

I will never understand why people say try and avoid subwoofer boom. That's what they do. My setup has 2 12" subwoofers @ 1000 watt rms each and they boom big time. I also have many other speakers for mids and high for anything over 50hz. Every cabinet set has its own amp and active crossover and equalizer. 4 sets of 3 way cabinets all facing the listener. Everything sounds great. Classic rock music is crisp and the bass is tight and punchy but the subs are not really doing much. Movies sound awesome even though in stereo. Put on some rap or Decaf music and boom goes the subwoofers. All the way down to 23hz. Anything lower and its just blowing air at that point. My point is that subwoofers boom and that is what they are for. If your playing 30hz or less and your not in the boom position (corner of room/back wall) then your not hearing the bass you are just feeling it. I'm 43 years old and I feel like a new generation of "audiophile" is happening right now. Electronic music has some of the best quality sound I have ever heard. Some of the mixes are outstanding 24bit audio. Fyi I also play everything through a computer with a high end interface. Dont get me wrong, Pink Floyd, Big Bands and such do sound great but it is quickly becoming a thing of the past when speaking for audio enthusiasts. I want the boom but I also want tight accurate hard hitting beat your eyes out double bass notes. You can have both with the right setup.

What about one Sub? These types of frequencies are never meant to create "stereo" images, more than one while mixing seems unnecessary. Should it be directly between the 67.5 inches from center cone to center cone of near fields? Should it be at the 25% of the room size from the front wall, given a 38% mixing position? How far up from the floor from an 8 foot ceiling should the sub be?
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, Low frequency energy is all about sound pressure and trying to get it to "fit' into a box "room". The position of the low frequency generating device within our rooms is dependent on many variables. It is dependent on room dimensions, volume, SPL level, construction methodology used to build the room, and a host of other variables. Creating a stereo image with a mono energy source that is felt instead of heard is not possible. The goal is pressure management within room size and volume. Once managed correctly, you can not localize the position of the sub. The only given I can tell you in this maddening process is to raise it off the floor. Elevation heights are from 12" - 36" based upon our testing. The platform you use is critical in this process. We use our carbon technology to reduce the floor to sub contact, elevate the sub, and absorb energy close to the source.
