Sight Words are common English words that can't be sounded out, so they have to be memorized. Here are some easy yet effective ideas for using songs, flashcards, and a game to help children learn and recognize sight words.
Teach for Life is a global movement of people sharing knowledge to better educate our children and create hope for the world. Find more educational videos, learn more about the movement, or learn how to participate at teachforlife.org/

I'm a 24 year veterans teacher. I've taught K-2. SIGHT WORDS CAN BE TAUGHT TO SOUND OUT. Look up the Science of Reading and Heart words. You can explicitly teach them and map them out. 😀

I taught 0:48 my kids to read using an old phonics book. They only learned one sight word - the word eye. That’s it! They sounded out everything else left to right.

How and what is your resource?
@branver1172
@branver1172 Жыл бұрын
@@useridgaf979 I used a rewriting of a 1800th century phonics book. They didn’t use sight words because most of the time we think words are spelled wrongly, we are actually pronouncing it wrongly. I taught my kids how they used to be pronounced. For example the word “one” comes from alone. We would pronounce it with a long O, and then show how the pronunciation changed. Or the word “said” is the past tense of “say”. If you pronounce it “sayed” it is actually spelled phonetically. That sort of thing. After awhile, my kids got a feel for how things used to be pronounced. We also read it old literature, so they were immersed in how English has changed in an informal way. I don’t think reading has to be taught like that. I’m not against some sight words, but I think some teachers over estimate how many exceptions to the rules we have in English. The lady who wrote the book I used never got around to publishing it. She used it to tutor at local schools. Most programs based on the research Orton -gillingham are good. There’s a FB page called the “Science of Reading” and they have lots of good info.

I really like that you explained that the pronunciation depends on what region you're from. Some people automatically assume something is pronounced wrong if it's not pronounced the same way as their part of the country.

The other problem with the short words with a schwa is that we tend to de-schwa them when reading them in isolation.

Most of these words are fully decodeable. Students she be explicitly taught the /TH/ and /th/ phonograms as well as the schwah sound. Words do not need to be memorized, they make complete sense with proper reading instruction.

True, Stacy. This video is well intentioned, but this sight word method is exactly what has led to what is labeled as "dyslexia" in children. Memorizing words leads to wiring the brain into trying to guess instead of decoding--the ONLY way reading in English can be properly taught.
@pariinprairie348
@pariinprairie348 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this, Stacy. I know my child will reject anything without a logical explanation, so was wondering how I would be doing this. For the same reason, she finds it difficult to associate a name to the sound (why the cuh sound should be called cee!). For now, she is fairly fluent in basic blending including oo, ee, ch and sh. Can you point me towards what I should do next and any recommendations for online resources? Thanks in advance.

Not all words can be phonetically decoded. Thought? Through? Said? Some just need to be memorized for fluency.
@ScottClifton1
@ScottClifton1 4 жыл бұрын
@@luzceniceros4349 The point she was making, I think, is that 99% of English words *are* decodable, and that the sight word method is simply not a legitimate way of teaching reading. Memorizing the 26 letters and 44 sounds takes care of an overwhelming majority of reading; trying to memorize tens of thousands of words leads to dyslexia diagnoses, spelling failure, and lack of reading comprehension, all of which were virtually unknown in literate nations before the advent of "look-see" methods.

Make flash cards and play games with them . Use the words in a sentences too. Make sure you teach your child the sounds for each letter. KZfaq has videos called bandunamu and they are so fun and educational and they do the alphabets and sounds ( look for the one that does the ABC's). We are addicted to bandunamu.My 3 year old has mastered 80 site words and is reading level A books. Good luck!

My son attended Wichita Collegiate for a short time, however students with dyslexia require a multisensory approach that has been taught at Fundamental Learning Center in your area. Many instructors have learned those specific methods from Jeanine Phillips and her team to tutor kids to read and succeed. I'm sure their school doors are temporarily closed, too. Stay safe.

That is a phenomenal question. I'm very into that exact ides because many sight words don't have much meaning without personally xinnecting it to the child. All words want to be a sight word one day - We know that orthographic mapping requires advanced phonemic awareness, letter-sound knowledge, and phonological long term memory. These all work together to help us produce a long term memory of the words we learn. I could go on and on, but I think it would be much more sensible if you watched this 4 minute video to help your children learn words with tricky bits in them. www.spelfabet.com.au/2015/07/sight-words/ Especially if you are a frustrated parent of a child continuing to present with difficulties due to poor teaching practices and the push to rote learn words, please avoid flash cards and memorising words. It does not provide your child with the skills for tackling new and unfamiliar words.

not really, especially if you have a greater phonemic awareness and knowledge of the alphabetic code, both simple and complex. Sight Word terminology is now becoming redundant.

When my own son was in first grade, he was selected for reading support services. This great reading technique has assisted a lot in bettering the reading abilities of my young man although he`s just on grade level and also his development certainly blown away his reading coach. I wish the trainer had made use of this program at school. Get this guide on *4ChildrenReading. Com*

The kids in my school are not focussed in playing the game. All they know is running in the classroom, beating and kicking each other. Give them a dice to roll and play a board game, they will throw it everywhere. They are only interested in spinning their erasers. They break their pencil nips and insert in the middle of an eraser and spin it like a top. Another game they play in the classroom is kicking empty plastic bottles or papers made into a ball in the classroom. They are least interested in educational games. They play the game as if it is the culture of the school. If one or 2 pupils do it, then it is the child's favourite game. If majority of the pupils play the same game, then i see it as a culture of the school. Surprisingly, they do it in every class i go in. So, i stopped giving them dices. They just move the coins without the dices. We can teach a weak child but not uninterested child.

Sorry to hear this. You are right, the culture of the school makes a huge difference. And one or two children can be leaders to get others excited with them.

I have been having a difficult time teaching my daughters sight words. They forget the word as soon as they read it. And everytime we go back to it, it's like a new word all over again. They're 5 and 7. I don't know what to Do.. it's like no matter how much we practice the same 6 words, the next time we go over them, the information is lost again. How do I know if my kids have a learning disability, and is it possible to even teach a child with a disability like dyslexia or apraxia of speech to read? My almost 8 yr old daughter is at a level 2.. the teacher told me the rest of her class is at a level 17! I am getting really worried. And it seems like the teacher has given up and put it all on me to teach her.. when I have absolutely no idea how to help her.
