Shows a few of the clues which can help you prove that you have been ripped off with fake / counterfeit Makita 18v batteries on Ebay and other online market places. You can then use the evidence to claim your money back. Could also give you the knowledge to avoid these purchases in the first place by asking the seller for specific pictures of the goods before you make the purchase.

I actually ordered 2 batteries on Amazon prime last week and they were these fakes! I was stunned! These things are everywhere now. I only realised because my new Makita charger refused to charge them. On contacting amazon they instantly refunded me and said I didn't need to bother returning them (shows they knew there was a problem to not ask me to return $200 of merchandise...) Thanks for posting video.

It's really annoying that places like Ebay and Amazon do nothing to stop this. After my expereince I reported several sellers to Ebay and nothing was done, with their listing continuin to this day. Another really annoying aspect is that my negative feedback (and someone else's) has been removed and now has 100% positive. So, anyone looking would think the seller is great. No idea how they get feedback removed.

Got the 6.0ah, same deal! Packaging was actually had 5.0 claims on it for charge time and capacity. Super disappointed! Currently going through the return process as well. I could tell as soon as I pressed the indicator through the packaging! The lights lit 3/4 of the 4th bar (which genuine ones do not) and when the indicator shuts off it crescendos down almost, as opposed to a genuine one which shuts off all at once quite abruptly! The price wasn't even necessarily too good to be true, was a discount from the box store yes but I was definitely surprised and disappointed. Great video brother!

The scammers are a pain in the arse. Thankfully I got a refund. The scammer had the hide to reach out and ask me to remove my negative feedback. He's dreaming, people need to be warned. Hope you get your money back.

Oh wow, I was literally going through on purchasing and thought I'll quickly check how to tell the difference. Your video came up and it was the same seller I was thinking about buying from. Thanks a lot, mate, I knew it was too good to be true.

Funny thing is, the scammer has mostly great feedback. Either the feedback is bogus or lots of people don't know they have been scammed. I find it hard to believe I would be the only one he tried to sell fakes to. Anyway, I am glad you checked before buying.

Excellent comparison and effective sleuthing! Over here in the States there are 6AH "genuine" Makita batteries on that auction site for $60! What a bargain :)

Thank you. I'll never buy another battery from Ebay as long as I live. I've bought phone batteries twice and both ended up being fake. With the fake Makita seller I was sucked in because they really weren't that cheap, just 15-20% less than retail. I'm pretty annoyed with Ebay because the negative feedback from me and another person has somehow been removed from the sellers Ebay store.

I will buy batteries on eBay, but only from trusted sellers with at least 99 percent approval from at least 10k sales. So far, so good...

Now there are fakes of much higher quality, with a white seal, only without the inscription on it (pc), with a red sticker, with qr code and soldered inscriptions, but the difference is in the loop to the charge indication board.

Thanks so much for your video. I should have done a search before I ordered mine. These things are still out there and I just received a 6ah from a different ebay seller that had all the telltale differences you described in your video. They wet to great lengths to reproduce almost everything. I'm surprised these scumbags haven't fixed the few things that give them away as fake. I have requested a refund through ebay.
@MickC2167

Yes, they go to so much trouble you'd think they would just fix up the tell-tale signs of being fake. Lucky for us they don't, otherwise the only option we'd have is to buy a Makita battery tester. What annoys the crap out of me is that Ebay do nothing about it. Sure you may get a refund but they allow the seller to keep on doing it.

@@MickC2167 Fleebay has sent me an email saying my money is being refunded to my credit card. The seller told me they are sorry and I can keep the battery. This is how he maintains a 100% customer approval rating and avoids trouble with Ebay. You would think Makita would go after them at least.

@@DSCircleJockey I suppose all Fleebay care about is getting their fees. I actually left negative feedback, as had two others, for the seller. I had a look last week and all negative feedback has been removed and the seller is back at 100% positive. It's a joke.

The cooling slots directly above the led lights are more elongated on my fake Makita. Also, there is a raised edge on the battery slot at the far right which is lacking on the counterfeit battery.

Hi, at the 1.20 mark you see where it says 3-2 on the battery. Just below that as the serial number. Min starts with 2122. It's more visible on the fake unfortunately.

Thanks for the excellent comparison. Always good to have another set of data-points.. Makita maintain multiple manufacturing locations and even barring sourcing variations they are forever changing apparently minor details in their products, with the result that any such demonstration from even a few months ago - or, for that matter, comparing 1850s vs 1860s - is bound to offer opinions based on apparently 'dispositive' ID markings that don't apply to all (or just more recently made) examples. In the interest of comparing notes so we can stay ahead of the fraudsters, here's another take on this subject.: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sMifeaeJ3ZisdJc.html .

I bought these. They are fake. I did capacity tests and they don't hold up there and all the give aways are there. I actually build my own Makita batteries using ali express parts and these work and behave exactly the same as those. Not bad if they are cheaper. Half the price or less. I'll be looking at getting my money back and if not reporting this to fair trading as it's fraud.

The seller is called Furnishstore (www.ebay.com.au/usr/furnishstore). He seems to have nothing more for sale. What really irritates me is that he has 100% +ve feedback yet I gave negative as well as two other people. Ebay knew he was selling counterfeit stuff due to refunds, yet they have obviously removed the -ve feedback. I'd love to know how the scammers get the -ve feedback removed.

Could be the battery is made in different countries aren't exactly the same just like in the same model drills that are made in different countries with the same model nu.ber are slightly different in appearance which i confirmed with makita so the batteries might be the same

I suppose that is possible. I'm in Australia and have purchased from USA and Europe and the only difference I've seen between the three different areas is the compliance sticker at the bottom. Other than that, everything was the same internally. This doesn't mean there couldn't be differences elsewhere.

What do you expect if you are paying a lot less for the fake? Of course it won't be as good as the real thing and that's why it's cheap and why you bought it.

Not sure where you live, but $200 isn't really that cheap for the two of those Makita batteries. It is about a 10-15% discount from what you can get at the local shops, which is a common difference for online purchases.

Michael Costello assumes that he is relying on a real Makita battery and compares it to a battery that seems to be fake, but it is not at all clear on what basis he makes a preliminary assumption regarding the authenticity of the battery that he calls real. It is also not clear if the visual differences he points out, indicate a lack of originality, or perhaps it is just a different version that is still manufactured by Makita. The correct scientific way to find out the originality of a battery is to contact the Makita company directly and ask for clarification. Second, and this is the most important thing, is to find out how significant the differences indicated in the video, are, and whether there is a real difference in performance between the two batteries. Another posting on KZfaq shows that there is no significant difference between the performance of a fake battery (i.e., not manufactured by Makita) and the real one. In this context I recall a joke about a customer who orders Asparagus at a restaurant but emphasizes that she wants it to be real because she doesn't feel the difference

a. I did not assume I was comparing against a genuine Makita battery; I was 100% sure. I have multiple genuine batteries which came from Makita tool kits purchased from a large hardware chain in Australia and serial numbers were verified with Makita Australia. The genuine Makita batteries also passed testing on a Makita Battery tester. The two non-genuine batteries failed the test. b. My video was not designed to rate the performance of the counterfeit batteries, and never professed to do so. It was simply to help people identify them. In fact, I did test them afterward to check performance using a battery discharger. The two non-genuine 5Ah batteries tested at less than 50% of rated capacity. The genuine batteries all tested around 80-90% of rated capacity, which is pretty normal for genuine batteries. c. The non-genuine batteries did not contain protection circuitry that works in tandem with circuitry in the tool to avoid overloading, over discharging and heating issues. One of them over discharged to a point where a Makita battery charger would no longer recognised it, thus leaving it unchangeable. The battery then needed to be specially charged with a different battery charger to get it up to a couple of volts so the Makita charger would then recognise and charge it. d. The non-genuine batteries were actually dangerous. At one stage while being discharged, one of them became very hot and started smoking. I only have one left now. e. I am well aware that some 3rd party batteries are perfectly fine to use and have used them in the past. I have no issues with 3rd party batteries sold as such at a price that properly correlates with quality. The batteries shown in the video were not cheap, were sold as genuine Makita batteries, were well under rated Ah, and were actually dangerous.
