Pick a few yesterday, with a lot of fairy ring champignons and a giant puffball. I made pâté with the fairy ring champignons and field mushrooms, then put cheesie breadcrumbs on a slice of puffball baked it in olive oil (not a lot of oil) until crispy . Then eat it, very nice indeed.

I think I have a yellow stainer that grew near three mushrooms that definately fit the description you gave of agaricus campestris. The stainer suspect had a hollow stem and was a dirty white on top. Stem base stained bright gold almost as soon as it was cut. Stem is long with no bulb. All specimens smell, but I can't tell for sure what they smell like because I've never really been able to tell my sense of smell with these mushrooms. Ring was fat, came off with ease, left remains around stem.

So glad I watched this, you just saved my life! I picked a bag full of mushies this morning that I've just enjoyed for lunch, bar one, a huge mother I was so tempted to sample but was a bit wary as it was too pale underneath. The yellow stainer was very evident and the smell, not the mushroom smell you'd want to eat. Thanks heaps!

OH I LOVE MEADOW/FIELD MUSHROOMS AND HAVE NOT HAD THEM FOR YEARS!!! I'm living on the Canadian prairies, so they're not so plentiful here, as they were in the Maritimes. The best smell in the world, or fragrance, is those mushrooms cooking in butter. Nice memory of my dad showing me how to identify and pick them. I may have to move to the UK for this. Meadow mushrooms have a strong fragrance to me, Idk if anyone else notices it, but it seems no other mushroom has that wonderful smell. They're also distinctly pink inside, ageing to brown. I should try harder to find them in Alberta, but -

Another great presentation, I did get caught out once with these by picking yellow stainners which just like field mushrooms maybe slightly more buff. It was only when I saw yellow ink all over my hands that I realised. My mate ate some, he was vomiting almost immediately. Thanks Marlow.

Today I have found two massive mushroom rings probably 60 meters in diameter each . I picked some of the large ones to take home . But some smell mushroomy and some like a chemical smell. They colour a little yellow when scratched. I chopped one up and put in the microwave for 60 seconds. When I took it out it smelt really bad and had turned really yellow. I'm gutted as there are literally hundreds of big mushrooms in each ring . Never seen mushroom rings so big before.

David, your microwave tip is BRILLIANT! I picked some that had only very faint yellow staining, none when cutting the base and they actually smelled quite mushroomy. However 20 seconds in the microwave and there was a pool of gold liquid, the cap had turned all gold and the smell was now quite unpleasant. Priceless tip! Also gutted because I wanted mushrooms on toast :( Cheers mate!

How about horse mushrooms I had a large amount of branches and comparable organic matter that came out of my yard for a number of yrs. After about 6 yrs. I cleaned up the wood and then I was going to put in a small shed. But I didn't get to it until today. When I get out there today to start on my project, I noticed a huge patches of white button like mushrooms. I was so excited.I did the scrape test it was good, I did the cutting of the bulbous roots and stem, it was not bright yellow. And I did the smell test...it smelled wonderful like the mushrooms from the store. Earthy and light. When I put a few in the microwave I panicked a little as they came out slightly yellowish. But I was adamant about identifying this wonderful lookin mushroom as there were so many. So I took a nice sliced several of them up and put them in my dehydrator and oh my gosh they came out smelling absolutely lovely like ones that you get from the store they were so good smelly. However I just want to make a definite decision whether I should use them or not as a culinary. This is my first time picking wild mushrooms and consuming them and I just want to make sure that they are not the staining mushroom. Thank you very much for any help you can be

Found some mushrooms in a field today. For the description and smell they were exactly as you described field mushrooms but when I made some slits with my nail in the cap there was some very slight yellowing. There was no yellowing when I scratched the stalk but I have binned them. Should I have done?

I used to feel the same - until this year, when I have only picked ceps and parasol mushrooms, both of which are very easy to identify. The latter is even tastier than the former - and both are better than any shop bought ones! Next year I plan to identify two more, and in 10 years I hope to know 20. Good luck - and if in doubt, don't!
