That was interesting and helpful but also like to know the names of the different circuit boards, what they're connected to and what they do. Thanks.

Thanks for the comment and question. Since the late 1970's there have been numerous manufacturers who created different electronic systems, circuit boards and names for them. To adequately cover them would require an entire show which I may do sometime.

@@PinballExpert I was referring more to the 80's 90's 20's machines but I realise even then it may depend on the manufacture. A vid on even some of them would be great. I really can't find a lot on YT. Thanks for the reply.

the 'ORBIT leisure centres' sticker sure brings back memories, there were two in Newcastle in 1980, dropped many twenty cent pieces there before and after school

Yes indeed, I was a keen player in the Brisbane City & Fortitude Valley (aka The Valley) Leisure Centres back then too. I got that Orbit plaque from a used Pinball i bought from there in the early 80's when i started my business in the Amusement machine industry repairing & operating Pinballs.

@@PinballExpert one of the Orbit centres in Newcastle was set up different to every other one I saw, all the machines had very short legs, about 100mm, yes one hundred mm long, and they were sitting on a raised boxed platform to bring them to normal playing height. it was next to impossible to nudge and move the machines in play. this centre was in the top end of town, a stones throw from the Hankin factory. I suspect Hankin had some influence with the Newcastle Orbit centres because every one had at least two copies of every one of their machines, either that or they got them at mates rates

@david white: Hankins (A Hankin & Company) owned the Newcastle & Sydney Orbit Leisure centres & Brisbanes 2 Leisure Centres, the name came from the first Pinball machine Hankins made in Australia, Orbit 1. The Pinball backglass looks like the Orbit plaque, that's where it came from.

Thank you for creating this video. I think it would have been easier to correlate the switches were which if you showed the switches in action topside in a small window when activating them from the bottom side. Just food for thought. I very much enjoyed this video. I think I might build my own pinball machine one day. :)

I think of pop bumpers as lateral up-kickers. For that "pop" sound you hear after you get a match of the last 2 digits of your score - I am guessing the knocker assembly is sent a message about the "match" score and like some pyrotechnic devices, it is given a delay time sometimes of 1-3 seconds before you hear that "knock pop" go off. Guessing that an electrical signal involving the match score is fed to the knocker assembly, and after a short delay, the knocker goes off and you hear the "pop." In some other pinball machines, the knocker "pop" happens nearly without any delay before you hear the pop - up to as little as a 1/2 second after the match score happens before you hear "pop!".

Very helpful. I appreciate all this information. Suggestion for show: How do the pinball power supplies work, and how do the circuit boards control the game play (sounds/lights/etc)?

My grandfather was electrocuted to death on a pinball machine in 1980. He had an arcade in Darwin, and was repairing a machine whilst still switched on. Everyone though he was yelling shit. But he was yelling SWITCH! Yes, I remember his funeral.

Very Sad, he was probably working on an electro mechanical pinball, most of them have exposed high voltage inside. Safety switches (RCD) in buildings these days help prevent electrocution.
