This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In her very personal talk, Nema Saleem shares her journey as a woman with a bi-cultural heritage.
Nema Saleem is a creative spirit, world traveler, and novice art therapist and counselor, who is currently completing her Master’s degree in Counseling and Art Therapy at Ursuline College. Cultural diversity and awareness have been pivotal in Nema’s development in that she grew up inhabiting two cultures, European and East Indian. Nema has been a leader and key figure in working on Service Learning Trips at Ursuline College, where she recently completed a trip to El Salvador and Ecuador. Her desire is to live a life where diversity is celebrated each and every day. Nema’s next journey begins later this year, when she will assist in the founding of an art therapy camp for AIDS orphans in Zimbabwe, Africa.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I felt less alone after watching this video. I have two distinctly contrasted cultures in my mind, Japanese and Western and it took me a while to be able to reach the point of saying "I am the member of the both cultures and am still myself wherever I am". This extraordinary experience changed my perspective on life. Uncertainty is my best friend. Happy exploring everyone!

The world is full of multicultural people now. So many good and postive things come from being bicultural or multicultural. However, there are definitely negative aspects that come with not being monocultural and I can think of about 10. Good talk.
