Not to mention that what seems like solid ,crusted lava can actually be just a thin crust above a lava tube and even a small dog would break through. That’s why in Hawaii they tell people not to walk out on the lava bed to see a new flow. Fall through : 2000 degree molten rock !

Notwithstanding everything you wrote, the tubes that aren’t filled with molten lava are often large cavities under a thin crust, rimmed with razor sharp glass shards, like falling through a dozen skylights.

Exactly! I lived on the Big Island for about a year in 2002, and went to Volcano a few times, and it never failed that some idiot tourist would walk away from the marked trail, to look down into the cracks and see the liquid lava flowing just beneath it. While I lived there, at least three people fell through the thin crust of the off path areas, and died. They don't exactly advertise it, as it would definitely affect tourist numbers, but it happens fairly regularly. The paths over the newly solidified lave were marked by the park employees, who scan the ground with high tech instruments to avoid thin spots, but idiots gotta be idiotic, and some of them pay the price. I remember one time while I was there, these parents took their kids off path, and had them all crouched down, to look into a vent crack, (which can sometimes spurt out lava), and waved me and a couple of other locals off, after we yelled at them to return to the path. Stupid is as stupid does.

I visited Hawaii in 1999ish. They had parts of the lava fields roped off, and i saw a young man go under the rope onto the crust, and he made it only a short distance before he broke through. His right leg went in up to his hip. He started screaming. I confess I ran away. There was nothing i could do, and I couldn't handle his screaming. I don't know how they got him out. There was a brief article in the newspaper the next day. He was in the hospital in critical condition. His leg had been literally roasted.

I know there are helicopter tours now to that once spectators hill, but quite sure this are guided tours and people are instructed not to get on the lava. @Glen Young Well said. It's amazing how many people in the US engage in "Sew-erage" (litigation) against someone else because they chose to be careless and/or do something stupid. It's like they're saying "It's my right to be dumb and I'm gonna make y'all pay me for it!" Having said that, I support people who seek recompense for wilful negligence, e.g. fire risk during Ford Pinto rear-end crashes, but why should others pay when someone is injured due to their own risky or careless behaviour?

With some of the completely foolish situations ive seen people at the volcano site doing next to fresh lava that was still moving, i really have been surprised no one has died or been seriously burned yet. I dont see how someone even reached that far up the volcano cone having to walk across practically new lava that is still hot just underneath the surface and lava moving in tunnels underneath and all the dangerous gasses out there. It is completely insane to go walk like half a mile over an active lava field that is constantly changing and the most obvious issue of how would someone outrun that lava as it is disgorging right out of the vent when it has been so fluid and fast moving? There is no way that person could stay ahead of it for very long. They were just very fortunate. It is a wonder the security team didnt see them crossing somewhere around into cordoned off zones.
