2:51 totally the fault of the proceeding "wide load" vehicle. Too far away, No clear indication what it is warning of.
@markwright31616 ай бұрын
What point is there of it being a hood ornament for the wide load truck? By the point any oncoming vehicle sees it and tries to slow or pull over for the wide load, they're already in the load. It's the whole reason the front escort vehicle is required, the truck the load is on being marked up isn't enough for people to be able to react. The clip starts too late to really say they didn't warn the dashcammer more, but the escort vehicle appears to have been moving away from the centre of the road when the dashcammer approaches, and it's clearly marked with amber lights and I think it has the proper 'oversized load' banner on the bumper (although the dashcam isn't great to see it in the shade, and moving), but the dashcammer appears to have just moved right instead of slowing on seeing the escort vehicle probably on the centre line as it was first seen on the corner. The dashcammer had a vehicle with amber lights straddling the middle of the road on a corner they can't see around/aren't looking around. Not slowing down to be able to stop if a worker or digger or something is in the road is stupid. Despite not seeing enough at the start of the clip to be certain, I'd still be relatively confident, 80-85%, in saying it was all down to the dashcammer. On playing it again just before commenting, it sounds like they're on the phone. Even if it's hands-free, studies have proven it still reduces concentration on other tasks such as driving. The corner is also open enough that if they actually looked around the corner instead of just the blank bit of road immediately in front of their car, they would have seen the truck coming and how much the load was overhanging the kerb-side, and therefore could be reasonably expected to overhang the centre line. 99.9% on them.
@ColinRichardson6 ай бұрын
@@markwright3161 What point is there of it being so far ahead of the wide load truck? People see the escort vehicle and don't recognise it's purpose, they just ignore it for being 'just another vehicle on the road', and do NOTHING.. Because they have no context for the vehicles purpose.
@markwright31616 ай бұрын
@@ColinRichardson The context is the lights and 'oversized load' sign. If a police car is blocking a road with blue lights on, but there's no obvious obstruction or incident in the road beyond it between it and the next corner, does that mean you can just drive around it because it's not obvious why it's blocking the road? Of course not. It has blue lights on and is in the middle of the road, maybe with cones, so you assume there's been a crash or something and take the detour. Trucks hauling oversized loads are often also over a weight allowed on the roads without special permits, etc, so cannot stop in as little space as a regular truck, which is already slow to stop compared to a car. Also, when the road has corners, etc, and/or long narrow sections where there isn't enough space for the load to pass any vehicles it might meet there, the escort vehicle needs to be far enough ahead to get oncoming vehicles to stop in a suitable location for the truck to pass, while the truck with the load is still moving, because momentum is very important, especially if the area is also hilly. So the front escort vehicle needs to be far enough ahead for oncoming vehicles to see it, be able to slow down, and pull over where there is an opportunity to do so, before the truck with the load gets there, without it being close enough to need that truck to need to slow for the oncoming vehicle to finish manoeuvring out of the way, and certainly without needing any vehicle to reverse. If there's a narrow bridge or similar narrow stretch on route, the escort vehicle needs to be far enough off/out the other side to get vehicles to stop before they reach the start of it before the truck as even reached the opposite side. And of course, the truck is moving towards that oncoming traffic, so halving the time the distance between them will be covered in, because the speed of each vehicle is added to each other, so the truck doing 40 mph and the oncoming car doing 60 mph means oncoming traffic effectively need the space to be able to slow from 100 mph left to be able to just get stopped in time, not including pulling off the road and whatever else might be needed for the truck to pass safely without needing to stop itself. They could also be meeting another truck, so imagine the distance one of them would need to stop from that higher speed, and find a large enough space to pull off the road without rolling (tipping onto its side) into a ditch, and manoeuvre into that space, all without making the oversized truck needing to stop. Again, saying the escort vehicle is too far ahead of the truck it's escorting defeats the purpose of having an escort vehicle. The whole point is to warn of the load approaching *before it's seen*, because seeing it is too late to be able to get out of the way. Look at when this driver saw it. Instead of reacting to the escort vehicle and slowing and pulling into that drive way, they drove themselves off the road to avoid crashing into the load, fortunately having the space to do so there. Had there been a barrier or ditch next to the road, they would have wrecked their car. If the escort vehicle is close enough to the oversized load to also see the oversized load in all conditions (given they're going around a corner here), that would be the result for every single vehicle they meet.
@ColinRichardson6 ай бұрын
@@markwright3161 Can you show me the 'oversized load' sign?
@markwright31616 ай бұрын
@@ColinRichardson I believe there was a cloth type material version on the front bumper that was not possible to see clearly by us due to a combination of it possibly being dirty (but not so dirty you couldn't still see it clearly in person), a lower quality camera, motion blurring the text, it being in the shade, so looking darker to the camera than IRL as it adjusts to the much brighter surroundings, and then KZfaq compression just finishing it off to be impossible to see in this video. While trying to go as frame-by-frame as I can from the first moments of the clip starting, I feel there is aliasing on it's bumper that would correlate with black capital lettering, possible one of those 2 piece 'OVERSIZED' and 'LOAD' half signs, with the 'Oversized' lettering compressed horizontally to fit on the same sized bit of material as the 'Load' one to leave the central space in the bumper for the number plate/licence plate clear. Even if they didn't have one on that lead vehicle, something I've noticed with US videos is that all oversized vehicles have red flags, which that escort vehicle had on the roof, so that should be recognised as the same as an oversized load sign, just like an unmarked police car doesn't have to have 'POLICE' written on the side to be recongised as one when it is responding to something with blue lights on. I think it could still have had the 'Oversized Load' sign(s) though, because even the very clear one on the truck with the load is made to look white by the camera, and the text is barely visible until a lot later in the clip, when the dashcammer exits the curve, and is still distorted. Also, with a lot of fiddling, I think I've seen a couple of frames of 'OAD' showing through the aliasing on the left side (their driver's side) of the bumper when full screen in 1080p on my laptop.
