The bike can legally be in the middle lane if he intends to turn left. But that's probably not what happened here since he continued straight when the car turned left in front of him.

This used to happen at a street I used to live by, because bicyclists did not feel safe on the shoulder of said road, but they have since built a two-way bike zone that seems to be well utilized now.

When I was in Korea, I saw a single motorcycle cop on the side of the road pointing a radar gun at traffic. Anyone he saw who was speeding, he waved over to the side of the road. Further up on the right side of the road, there was a parked police car, and the officer was writing up tickets to a line of cars each waiting to receive their ticket.

You can look left when you're not in front. You just have to be stopped while you're looking.

Watch a little longer - the car pulls back out and you get a glimpse, but the clip is sped up at that point.

At least the BMW did probably 20x damage cost to their own vehicle vs the cammer, so there's some justice

Exactly ! The cammer had two things in mind: 1- Doing rubber necking 2- Acting like the stop sign was a yield sign and not stopping. Cammer says "I was the idiot today" Let's correct this: "I often do this idiot thing, but today it went bad"

No I made a horrible assumption and I learned from that mistake. And i was in a rush so I made a poor choice.

You probably know that it's pretty common to read "He BrEaK checked me and made me hit him because he didn't leave enough room by going faster!" I'm just saying that your only concern at the time should have been making it to the line and stopping without hitting someone, by looking forward. There was no point in looking to the left for any other traffic until you had come to a complete stop safely. Once you're stopped, THEN you check for oncoming traffic. What you did is one of very few and very important reasons why you're supposed to stop before you make your real check for oncoming cars. (The other is because it's very difficult to gauge the situation while you and the other cars are all moving, despite some people claiming they're excellent at it in contradiction of mounds of studies and traffic deaths that prove otherwise.) Plus, it looked like you were accellerating just a bit when you hit the other car. You'd have a hard time convincing me that you weren't planning to roll through the light.

Yup. Forgetting to turn off your blinker is usually just an annoyance to other drivers. But in situations like this it can cause an accident.

If the cyclist had been a car driver, passing where it's not allowed (or expected), would you defend him as strongly? As a cyclist myself, I follow the rules of the road and act as predictably as possible because I'm the one with the most to lose.

@@julies9798 i often see cars in the thru lane not moving while left turning traffic is moving, esp on an advance light. so the passing question is moot. for all we know there is an intersection up ahead where the cyclist is turning left. without second guessing roadworks and the cones, from what i can see, cyclist was using the turn lane correctly at the time of the video

So, if I intend on turning left eventually, I can use the middle turn lane to pass? I wouldn't do that in my car (never mind that oncoming traffic can use that same center turn lane), doing it on a bicycle is plain nuts.

​@ranlive1 It is basically illegal unless you have a prescription from a doctor that allows little tinting if the Sun/UV rays caused issues to your eyes or skin. In the state of Washington where I live it is legal to have 6 inches of non-reflective tint from the top of windshield.

Pretty sure that's on the channel. Saw the same vid on a different channel and it was normal speed (not that it helped grabbing the plate).

Not with that big gap on the right there. There'd need to be a little more going on to be able to justify it in most states. It's still a great reason to cc though- you never know how dangerous people like that could be when you stop to get their info for insurance and the authorities after they just broke your window.

@@kenlompart9905 Yup, you're right! Trucker comes to a complete stop in the left turn lane, with his left turn signal on, before switching his turn signal off and making a sudden right turn without indicating.

I didn't see any signage, but it's not like it's posted every 50ft. Some parts of California have signs that restrict trucks to the right lane. At least they did when i was there last (2012)

​@themightymutt6653 In California, trucks (semis, not pickups), other commercial vehicles with more than two axles (passenger buses excepted) and vehicles towing trailers are restricted to the right two lanes on multi-lane highways. The clip is not from CA, so that rule may not apply, but it does in many states.

A lot of trucks will veer right to turn left since they can't make the corner otherwise. If you're behind a truck with its turn signal on, why not just stay back until you're sure you can get past him? Kind of like when a truck is turning into you and can't get over - the courteous thing to do is back up if you can and give him room.

@@gsdalpha1358 While that was what he was technically doing, he had his left turn signal on and that indicated to the cammer that he was going left. The truck is at fault for having the wrong signal on that created this accident. He wasn't in a blind spot either when coming up, I'd guess the trucker failed to properly take the time to watch the mirrors during the turn and just assumed people would stop. Once the car made it to the blind spot it was too late. It is also possible that he was indeed going to turn left and failed to properly check his mirrors again before swinging into another lane to make the turn. Looks like he could make that left without swinging wide, but it is hard to tell from the cammer perspective. Insurance would fault him 100% in both cases.

@@gsdalpha1358 If the semi had its RIGHT turn signal on, then yes, you would be correct. But the LEFT signal was on, and the semi was entirely in the LEFT turn lane. The correct procedure for a semi to make a right turn would be to turn on its RIGHT turn signal, and use both the thru and left-turn lanes to indicate a wide right turn. That didn't happen here - this driver changed his mind at the last moment OR this driver is completely incompetent.

@@70TruckGuy No argument at all truck driver is at fault. Point I was trying to make is (imo) - after 50 years of driving and no wrecks - situational awareness on both drivers was lacking. Learn to anticipate big rigs are going to be road hogs in turns and lane changes. Blind spots and geometry are their achilles heel. I used to see almost all semi trailers with the rear warning caution about wide turns. Maybe time to bring it back? Again, truck driver at fault - yep - but if the 4-wheel driver had held back 2 seconds accident wouldn't have happened. Pointing fingers doesn't ease the paperwork, vehicle loss, headaches, or sheer PITA aftermath of this collision.

Those are lug nut covers and are 100% legal in the states.

For the first one, over the 46 years I have been driving I routinely look and gauge traffic but don't lose track of the vehicle in front of me except for one dark and wet morning in Suisun City, a pickup truck was at the stop sign, took off, I approached the stop sign, saw it was clear and I accelerated right into his backside, for whatever reason and possibly with no brake lights, he just decided to stop. For the second one. Yea....I might took the bait too, truck was in the left lane with his left turn signal on.

Nothing wrong with being aware of the traffic before you stop. You just need to be aware of the car in front of you first and foremost.

@@spamlessaccountThat's true. I'm saying (As in this clip) the best way is to get into the habit of first complete your stop then look for crossing traffic. Being aware of traffic comes naturally with good driving habits.

Naw. You can barely see the dots in the intersection at the start of the clip. Cammer is in the only place he can be in the right lane. All the lanes then shift left to enlarge the right lane, to make enough space for a right-turn lane. Cammer is going straight so he correctly follows the left side of the now-larger right lane. Exactly what he's supposed to do.

Are you claiming the cammer did something wrong, or just for submitting a non-event?

I don't know about illinois, but in California, you are not allowed to block the intersection. The car that stopped would only be able to proceed if it could do so without blocking. That is why it stopped. Even if a car gives you space to get through a line of traffic, it does not mean that you can just shoot through. You need to be careful.

The only possible beef I see is the SUV's speed (school zone starts right there), but there's no way to tell from the video.
