STORM DESMOND
By posting this video of Storm Desmond in Salthill, Galway I wish to highlight the absolute madness and stupidity of what these youngsters are doing. I do not know if they are strong swimmers or not, that is not the case, if any one of them got into difficulties there was no one there to do anything for them. The voluntary and rescue services are kept busy enough without having to worry about this type of stupid behaviour.
Please God, everyone will have a happy Christmas, perhaps it could have been very different. I would like to make it very clear that I or anyone else do not condone or see any "macho" side to this incident.
In a couple of hours this video clip has received 168,000 views across the globe and everyone is of the same opinion "fools", "eejits", "morons" and worse. Count your blessings and do not, ever, repeat this type of "stunt". Cathal Devlin

I camped on the west coast of ireland in the early 2000's. Got out of bed on a gray cold windy rainy day, to my surprise there was a cue of people headed down to the beach to take a swim. I followed suit, and plunged in! Coming up to the surface I heard a fellow swimmer shout YAH ITS GOOD!...then I knew I was among my people!

@@cathalmcdonough5247 Cathal, appreciate the comment but the speed of getting out of the water doesn't make one a strong swimmer. No strong swimmers would get out in those conditions - I presume you're an open water swimmer and have a fair understanding of a difficulty swimming against a strong current, large waves and strong winds or losing your body heat 20 times faster in the water... these boys were just very very lucky.

They did make it out okay. I honestly don't know how this is different than skydiving, bungee jumping, or *ahem* surfing on hurricane produced waves - all taking unnecessary risks just for the thrill... But that's just me and I'm a "to each his own" type of person. What I don't get is the negative feedback on these boys and all the positive feedback on other forms of thrill seeking. What's the difference?
@wiba6141
@wiba6141 8 жыл бұрын
+MOMETEK The difference is that if they get swept away to sea then rescue workers have to risk their lives trying to get them back to safety and people have died this way before. Bungee jumping is very safe and so is sky diving. Dude, is it REALLY that difficult to understand where he negative feedback is coming from? I mean it is cool as fuck to watch but it is also very stupid at the same time, it can be both.
@Mometek
@Mometek 8 жыл бұрын
Wi Ba www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6119a4.htm - According to the CDC website, there has been 2.07 drownings per 100,000 males. adventure.howstuffworks.com/skydiving8.htm - There are roughly 1 fatal accident per 1000 skydiving jumps. Don't know how many skydivers end up in trees or on mountains in need of a dangerous rescue mission from other people. www.iihs.org/iihs/topics/t/general-statistics/fatalityfacts/state-by-state-overview/2013- 10.3 deaths per 100,000 with Car wrecks in 2013 (to put things into perspective) I honestly don't think either is stupid or smart. But I don't think I'm going to jump out of a plane with a piece of cloth tied to my back or go surf the waves during the next Hurricane on a seal-shaped (read: shark bait) board anytime soon. Considering that there are more swimmers than skydivers, the stats are close enough to make me still think that there really isn't much of a difference in risk, especially if you know what you are doing. I still don't understand why one would be more "stupid" than the other. And finally... I am woman. Not a dude. ;)

I totally agree! Its simple if anything goes wrong when you skydive or bungee jump your basically on your own,"splat".! But this shit here others have no choice but to put their lives on the line. Why should other mothers, fathers, and family's not have they're kids or loved ones make it home all because some idiots wanted to get a good KZfaq video!!!

MOMETEK Bungey jumping is secure and controlled, as is skydiving(if it wasnt safe for educated people the military wouldnt send people doing it) This however is completely unsafe and these children (you act like one you get treated like one) are of course thrill seeking morons. And when you drowned Im supposed to feel bad and pull the "he died doing what he loved" crap.

Lots of criticism from the meek who have never left the comfort of their home in a storm like this. Those people living in the gray twilight: "Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat." Theodore Roosevelt

Ahhh, another admirer of the foolhardy; praising gross stupidity, immaturity, and amateur hackery as valuable character traits equivalent to the traits of courageousness, responsibility, heart, and professionalism. The people who drive the human race forward, with spirit, endeavor, and adventure are not those who risk their lives in worthless, idiotic stunts, to satisfy their own selfish vanity of ego. Rather, they are those who risk their lives to advance the boundaries of civilization & knowledge for future generations. They are those who risk their lives to save the lives of others, and to ensure the safety of others.
@rocketraccoon1976

Instead of throwing themselves into heavy seas for a cheap thrill & for selfish vanity, they should try throwing themselves into heavy seas to rescue those in peril, by becoming lifeguards or rescue divers. Instead of risking all that their parents, friends, teachers, and mentors have invested in their lives, for nothing more than a momentary cheap thrill; they should spend it wisely & responsibly, and try to give back a return on what they have received. Instead of risking all the future good they are capable of, for the sake of a foolish whim, they should think about how they can enrich the lives of future spouses & future children, and strengthen the bonds of future society.
