That's also the reason why the movie iteration of Pennywise is much more creepy than the the TV show one, Tim Curry portrayed the clown as a human in makeup but Bill Skarsgård went into a different direction, portraying something that attempts to appear human but doesn't quite achieve a convincing immitation.

my theory is that its hard-corded in our condition to feel unease towards things which look almost human because its reminiscient of a corpse. the meaning behind it being that when you see a corpse, it means whatever killed it might still be lurking, which activates our fight/flight to get out of there, and thats the way its been throughout history.

A personal theory of mine as to why so many people get creeped out by this, is possibly because humans through millions of years of evolution we have adapted to use our senses our sight being one of those primary senses. Now I believe people see things like this as creepy is because it looks human like at a distance we perceived it as human but upon closer inspection we see that it's not human and a tiny little piece of our brain screams "this thing is just pretending to be human it's a possible predator!" Like how some species of animals evolve to look like their prey as a way to lure them in close to attack and eat.

the uncanny valley comes from 2 origins, 1) "cave men" looked "not quite human" and to discourage cross breeding people who found them unsettling tended to genetically profit. 2) genetic abnomality is considered undesirable on the grand scale of things so not looking "quite right" could be a sign of ill health

Why are our brains wired to fear things that mimic humans ? Was there something In the past that was kept in the dark? All of our fears and anxiety’s stem from human evolution and our brains defense mechanisms. Being anxious is actually a response from the brain that is suppose to save us. Same thing with fear . So why do our brains have the pathways to automatically fear something that is trying to mimic being a human? Skin walkers? Mimics? Etc.. I’m not sure but it’s definitely something to think about !

Uncanny valley here is caused by 2 main issues: anywhere between 80-99.9% human appearance without perfect replication and inhuman action WITH human appearance. Not only does 1 have to be perfect, so does the other or you still get the same effect. Take this video for example. There's facial issues: sunken eyes and darkened mouth caused by a mixture of makeup (black eyeliner and lipstick highlight the shadows created on the eyes and mouth while hiding imperfections in the face, giving it a mask-like appearance with the impression that there's nothing behind it), facial contortion (furrowed eyebrows, deliberately dilated pupils, etc) and posture (barely noticeable tilt of the head to create darker shadows), and unnatural skin tone created through heavy makeup (it's part of why some people find clowns scary). Then there's action flaws: npc stare (that unblinking blank expression or half-smile that doesn't reach the soulless eyes that devs put on random npc 5 billion because they didn't want to put the effort into creating realistic expressions that change naturally), no communication (verbal or nonverbal. Beyond looking at you they don't show any indication that they acknowledge your presence), and mechanical tracking (they don't track the person with their eyes but instead face them the entire time).

It is just basic psychology. Humans don't like things they can't completely recognize. Then there is also the fact that there are reasons people find smiling creepy for instance. In almost ALL other apes, smiling is an insidious gesture that means you are about to fight whomever you are smiling at as it is basically the equivalent of giving someone the finger. Things like that most likely lie dormant in our instinct and make us wary as to protect you from those looking to harm you.

Robots? Ok he acted robotically when he spoke to me, and wouldn’t answer questions normally, repeated my own sentences back to me, then repeatedly asked me to go somewhere with him. All while staring straight ahead. He didn’t seem to have ears beneath his beanie...it was four am and I was smoking a cigarette on the porch. He just walked up and sat down like he lived there. I became more scared than you could imagine and didn’t not fall asleep until the next day. Also asked a friend to make him leave, he was also confused about the persons responses and said he wouldn’t listen to him. I locked all windows and doors but still felt really scared like something was horribly wrong. This was in Bellingham wa, New Year’s Eve four am 2007.
