Out of My Element and its a legit album!!! A Christmas miracle

God this is such an incredible album. If it wasn't for the Daughters record I'd wholeheartedly say this is the best rock album of the year.

IDLES are a local band for me, saw them do free shows in Bristol before they released their debut. I did a tape release of thier second EP. It's fascinating seeing them become this big cult act with a worldwide fanbase. Thier fans are a very dedicated bunch, they are a band you either go crazy over or utterly despise.

Would this even really be “out of your element”? I mean it seems like this album would be perfect for you

It’s quite incredible how far Idles have come, both over here and in the US. I remember seeing them as support for DIIV and Dead Kennedys, never thought they would be reviewed by yourself and Fantano

Definitely in my top 3 of the year, though even as someone who loved their previous record Brutalism, the album as a whole was a bit of a grower for me. Definitely more detailed and ambitious than Brutalism on all fronts though, and the aggressive positivity is so exhilarating for me to listen to. Glad you liked it.

I'm glad you liked it, it's my favorite album of the year. Maybe you can check out their previous one, Brutalism, as well. It's a little darker, but just as good as Joy. One of the best bands at the moment in my opinion.

man i loved this album, gave me a renewed vigor for hardcore style punk going into this new decade, new music is getting good again

I don’t usually listen to post-punk style music that isn’t from the 70s or 80s but decided to give this one a go and thought it was pretty damn good. Infectious and energetic songs played with skill and really sharp and funny lyrics.

Their last record was much more dynamic and bombastic. If you like it, should definitely go back and listen to Brutalism

Incredible album, I didnt really get into them until after I saw them live which was a wake up call. It woke me up to how much we are missing out on because they brought energy and a positive message. Its definitely an album that took awhile to get into but now its one of my favourite albums to sing along to.

Been a year almost. I got pulled back into this one your words "I might wake up June 2019" were kinda prophetic for me. Think big part was seeing the few live videos that came out this past year, there's something about seeing them play with this massive energy but also a sense of humor. I can see what they were trying to record in the studio, it's almost like they couldn't do what they really had in mind without a crowd.

Nice! I totally get you on the album, it's definitely good but I am not gonna go out and listen to it a bunch. The times I want this sort of energy tho it does fit the bill pretty nice.

Nice review! As others have mentioned, if you like this the Daughters album is similar and a bit better. Do you go for Noise Rock often? Like AmRep, Cows, Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Killdozer type shit? Seems like something you might be into, but maybe not.
