I stayed in season lodge just opposite to Rathna cafe in 1974,75 and 76.mysalary was very low.R.C.idli sambar alone was my daily breakfast .many times l have stood before the manager with empty pocket.doesnt matter, pay next time was the cool reply.Unforgettable.God is great.

What you said is absolutely true. In olden days v used to go there with our kids. Infact bucket sambarnu kooda sollalaam😅. Athana dhatraalama sam ar koduppadhu ratna thavira veru engum illai. Hats off to this recepie and to Rathna Cafe 🎉🎉

My bachelor days life at Triplicane, Ratna Cafe was my tiffin outlet from 1978 to 1996... sambar idli was my regular intake... sambar was served in small buckets.. Thanks for the vdo.

Like you i grew up with Shanthi Vigar and Ratna cafe idly sambar. Ispire us with food related history of Madras

Correct sir. My father used to have breakfast in Ratna cafe triplicane during 1940's when he was at his 20's. Sambar is unlimited for 2 idilies where those days sambar used to fill their stomach (father used to tell they can afford money only for 1 or 2 idilies)

You are absolutely right. I am at 52. I eat Ratna Sambar by 28 yrs. But I admire Saidapet vadacurry in Mari Hotel and Udupi Sambar which is more tastier than triplicane it is Gowri Nivas near Karaneeswarar kovil Saidapet.

Same here! Back in the 80s as a kid go every Sunday evening from Anna Nagar to Triplicane just for that jug sambar and idli and then head to the Beach! Memorable days with zero traffic…maximum 15 minutes by car. Imagine going now from Anna Nagar to Triplicane 😱 Miss my old Madras ! But now the taste is not that authentic as it was back then. I think after that master died way back the taste also disappeared 😢

அந்த காலத்திலே வேலூர் பேலஸ் கஃபே இட்லி சாம்பர் இப்படி தான் இருக்கும். போய் உட்கார்ந்த உடனே 2 இட்லி சாம்பார் தட்டு நிறைய ஊத்துவார்கள். பழைய நினைவுகள்.

Thank u so much for ur good efforts to bring in old memories of tasting the Rathna Cafe SAMBAR (prepared so well by u). Yes, 40 years back the taste of that sambar in Rathna Cafe was excellent, but today u cannot find someone preparing that kind of Sambar, of course in Kumbakonam, Trichy n in Tanjore u can find such quality the hotels. Thank u.

I stayed in Triplicane for about 3 years, 1971 to 74. RC idli sambar and Vadai saambar, Tirnelveli idli tomato chatni, Sydoji mess meals were my favorites. Vegetables were never in RC Saambaar. Saambaar those days and now, a lot of difference. . A significant deterioration.

I landed in Chennai in the year 1986. Initially I stayed with my friend in Mambalam. One day my friend took me to the beach and for dinner we went to Ratna Cafe. I liked the idli sambar so much and within a week I found a mansion in zambazar and sifted my stay. I left Chennai in 1989 but still visit Chennai at least once a month. If time permits I will definitely make a visit to Ratna Cafe only to eat idli sambar. In the morning one can have raja kichadi, Special vadai. Meals served were also very good. Thank you sir for taking me back to those days.
