Inside Glasgow's underground after-hours party scene

In the second of our Global Street Style documentaries, i-D crosses the border into Scotland to meet the young people carving out Glasgow's underground scene.
Discontent with the current political climate, they are artfully rebelling, reclaiming the city and throwing illegal after-hours parties. In this love letter to inner-city Scottish misfits, we discover more about the ripple effects of regeneration on Glaswegian youth culture.

This literally has no narrative. Is it about politics? Is it about parties? Is it about skateboarding? Is it about blowing up houses? Or is it just a heavily stylised video designed to portray an image of Glasgow that is so far out of kilter with what the underground scene is really about?

Laura Gregson Exactly. What an empty, pretentious load of bollox, like pretty much everything on ID. I'm totally down with partying, having a sense of style, and doing something different from the mainstream, but all the pseudo political blah blah and posing is just ridiculous. Do they not get tired of themselves?

this really isn't an accurate portrayal of glasgow youth culture at all. very pretentious, wealthy students. glasgow is a great city because it isn't pretentious. it's an honest, forward thinking and liberal city, with a great youth outlook, but i couldn't watch this video without being irritated by some of the comments.

Load of bollocks. Theres nothing political about it. Its a place to go and get mwi and listen to good tunes not some post brexit political statement fs. And Glasgow has had after parties for over 20 years and the legit afters spots were not daft enough to allow this unnecessary publicity of what should be done "incognito"

David T. Pocock aye man it's so daft. To be fair on the arty troops they were under the impression that the video was going to be about young creatives in Glasgow and actually had a lot of their artwork edited out. People that have spoken to are not too happy about the way that it has been portrayed.

Middle class students kidding on they're working class by having raves with other middle class students while they're wearing trackies and trying to act working class is literally the least anti establishment stance anyone has ever took ever. If they were actually anti establishment they would take action to help the most vulnerable people in society, not hold raves in empty warehouses.

The one girl in the clothes store kind of gave it away. ''I want to look back on this in 5-years and say I tried it''. It's a phase. And more importantly, she knows this isn't the life she has to live. The true reflection of Glasgow would be the people living on estates, not some artsy fartsy student from out of town.

Lorenzo The Gorbals, if this vid is anything to go by. Go round the back of the Laurieston pub (shown in the video) and there are some abandoned railway arches (also visible in the vid) that are often used for parties. I live just down the road so I clocked the location right away. Wouldn't recommend wandering round there at night unless you're in a crowd and you know exactly where you're going, tho.
@dissonantdreams
@dissonantdreams 7 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. It's hardly "incognito" if your "secret location" is clearly identifiable in the video! Those abandoned railway arches are in the Gorbals, right behind the Laurieston pub where some of this was filmed (just around the corner from me) - I'm sure these West End hipsters think they're so edgy for venturing south of the river for a party, but I can guarantee they wouldn't last five minutes walking around here at any other time. This video is definitely not representative of ordinary Glaswegians.

As a youth in Scotland, this is just nae it. You want to see Scottish fashion culture? Go to t in the park ahahah, Glasgow is pretty bangin tho would def recommend goin but don't expect what you seen in this documentary because you'll be disappointed to see that this isn't what Glasgow partying is really like.

philzambo didn't say that, did I? the first past the post system means SNP got 56/59 MP places even though SNP only had 50% of Scottish votes, so you can hardly argue that it's first past the post that's fucking Scotland over ...

I am surprised with the producers of the video, Glasgow does have a decent underground scene, and these were the best example of after parties the film company could come up with? I suppose the guys really doing it would never appear on screen.

If government was reformed to their liking, they would still have a problem with it. Young people will always find a problem with society because they like to feel like they are rebelling. It makes them feel in control.

These after parties aren't new. We were going to unit parties in Glasgows warehouses, lockups and the countryside while some of these folk were at primary school drawing pictures of their family in crayon. It's got hehaw to do with politics and everything to do with getting on it till 7am. Good on them for continuing the legacy though.

What LiamBTV was saying - it's nothing to do with politics. I go to Incognito some of the nights it's on and this doc is really not a great representation of what it's like and all about. That said it was very well put together and of course it's great to see them covering PART of the underground scene in Glasgow. They completely missed out the whole music scene: grime etc. I know that i-D is more towards the art side of things although it's absolutely fundamental for what's happening in Glasgow at the moment. When you go to Incognito no one cares what gender etc you are, what background you come from or anything. It's all just about having a decent night with good people, music and culture. It really isn't a political statement or a big fuck you to society. It's a modern addition to Glasgow that makes everyone welcome and gives a platform for upcoming musicians and much more. Producers, MC's such as Rapture 4D, Polonis, Shogun, MFTM and so much more come through to Incognito and it's really growing the scene in Glasgow and Scotland. Definitely feel this doc wasn't a true representation of what it's about but still appreciate i-D covering Glasgow. Check out LVLZ, Shogun and all them if you're interested in the music scene!

Sounds decent from what you describe. Honestly this doc just showed me a bunch of west end wankers trying to pass off like they're political intellectuals. Just interested in decent music and awright chat tbh.

Honestly this doc put Glaswegians in a light that we don't suit. Glasgow is genuine, the people are genuine - the west end wankers aren't a true representation of the vast majority of the population here. Most people don't give a fuck about looking smart, we're just looking for a fun welcoming environment to have a good night in. I think i-D were trying to put a political spin on the underground scene that's not really there for the most part.

I been a couple times to Lunacy, last time I went it got raided though so I dunno how great they're doing these days. I've never been to this Incognito one though, was pretty surprised to see an Afters I didn't recognise! You ever been one of the lucky chosen elite, as this video is making them out to be? Fuck I miss Glasgow, moved out to Skye with my family a few months ago and it's pretty but fuck me there's nothing happening.
@GRAFFDEMON
@GRAFFDEMON 6 жыл бұрын
Nah I'm not art school enough for Incognito haha. A few of my mates have been in the past and they've said it's really not much like what the documentary is making it out to be at all. Lunacy at least when I went was fucking packed, I think the polis turned up at one point but just looked about and left after 15 minutes.

As a glaswegian, i can say that these people do not represent the majority of glasgwegians. Having been around the art school scene when I was a bit younger, everyone was fairly insufferable. Taking symbols of working class culture such as buckfast, and track suits and trying to make them into a fashion statement. Funnily enough these are the same kids that will bang on about how wrong cultural appropriation is.
