I worked in a garage in the early 1970's that repaired citroens. An owner brought in a DS and to make room the pushed the car against a wall but the wall had a sink attached and the bonnet was now under the sink. When the mechanic started it next morning the front suspension rose up and ripped the sink from the wall.

STEPH, YOU HAVE JUST REVIEWED MY OLD CAR (G454 HAW) WHICH I BOUGHT NEW IN 1989 FROM CHARLES LEWIS, SHREWSBURY ! It was my company car for two years until I replaced it 45,000 miles with a BX 1.8 diesel at which point my wife used it regularly until 2012 when it was sold to a young lad from Newark with 75,000 miles on the clock. Back in 1990, it developed a big end knock at 32,000 miles and Citroen UK fitted a whole new engine FOC. If the odometer is still original then the old girl has done 55,000 miles in the last 7 years so someone has probably been using it as a 2nd car? The gear knob story I'm afraid is a porky, it left our ownership in 2012 with the original black Citroen one still intact. The towbar is the one I fitted myself in 1989. Not sure about the front bumper, I can't remember it having fog lights as original equipment so possibly someone in the last 7 years has fitted a 2nd hand TRS version?

Great to read some extra history from a previous owner. Think it must have had a front impact as front wings, bonnet and bumper are all blue and being plastic, clearly didn't rust. Hopefully as it is for sale, it will get some new love to get it all matched up again.

Yay Citroën BX!!!! I had a BX 14 for about 5/6 years and absolutely loved it. So comfy and smooth, surprisingly quick for a 1360cc engine in a large car! Never tired of the car lifting when you started it. Used to sit outside the house and play with the height adjuster.... Car goes up.... Car goes down! 😂

I had it from 2004 to 2008 and put 30,000 miles on it, only two problems I had was a hydraulic pipe leaking and failed starter motor. Both easy fixes and excusable on quite an old car. I've had numerous Citroën's ( BX, ZX, Berlingo, C3 and currently a 2cv6) and, fingers crossed, not had any serious problems.

I loved our old BX estate. It had done an unknown, but very large, number of miles and kept soldiering on. It is by far the most comfortable car I've ever been in; well up to modern standards. It's achilles heel was that shallow front end, which meant there wasn't much room under the bonnet for things like a full-sized coolant reservoir. That meant that if it sprang a leak it would overheat very quickly. This, combined with the lack of temperature gauge, saw the end of quite a few of them. Ours went off to an enthusiast who didn't want a test drive, but just wanted to watch me driving it. He said he would know from the way I drove it whether there was a problem.

Prefer seeing these real-life vehicles with all their original dings and dents and everyday wear vs. pristine and perfectly restored newly-painted showpieces which are fine in their car show element. Love this little unique Citroen! Another fun fact-filled post from Steph. 😄👍

grim reaper I agree. I‘ve restored 6 BX‘s and can tell, that this shown example is on its last leg. The 1.4s were never really so popular, because they are weak powered and lack the servo steering. When the bumpers are on an angle like here , you can be assured that the rust has been on a very advanced level, because all the holding brackets are gone basically.Anyways: In England there is the Chevronics Service Center, who are specialized on BX and GS/A. You can get all the parts there, but nonetheless: I’m not sure whether these cars will survive.People don’t appreciate this awesome Gandini design somehow.I do. That’s all I care for and a good example drives magnificent. You can do everything yourself, which is also important in my eyes , especially in today’s world of hypercomplex cars.

Brings back memories as I had a 14 RE as one of my first cars. No power steering on that one, though - Nobody would call that light! Regarding "classic" cars, the purists forget that 80s cars are pretty much all over 30 years old now - There was no question of 60s cars being classics in the 90s. It's snobbery imo.

Lets add some nerdtalk here. The BX Design ist quite interesting, as it was used three times before finally Citroen used it for production car. The first, and still very close, version of the Marcello Gandini design, was the Relian/Anadol FW11. Seeing this, you can clearly see the later BX design. But the FW11 was cancelled (I think at least to rolling prototypes are still existing). Some years later Volvo had the Tundra concept car, and if you look at this, you will find the BX lines again. And of course, the Tundra was commisioned by Bertone in 1979. But that was not the end of. Next one asking Bertone for a design was Mazda. For their 1981 MX81 concept Bertone used the basic shape of the later BX again. So first the Reliant, second the Volvo, third the Mazda and finally Marcello Gandinis design came into production with the BX.
@marcbrasse747
@marcbrasse747 4 жыл бұрын
I have however read that some of this was parallel work. If I remember correctly the Tundra was actually designed later then the BX but seems an earlier design because it got much quiker to public attention because it was a concept car.

Between you and Mr. HubNut, I've gotten acquainted, from afar, w/ some models (and even makes) that we generally didn't see here in the States, especially where I live (Ohio) in the "Rust Belt"--not many examples of anything roadworthy here, pre-2000 or so, unless they turn up at car shows! Nice job on explaining the car, and the encouraging words about getting involved in ownership of the "humble classics", as I call them. Subscribed!

Really enjoyed your review as always! I have experience of 2 BXs. My brother owned (from new) one of the first BX 14s imported into the UK back in 1983 on an A plate. I remember we did a trip to North Wales (from Worcestershire) in it and I was wowed by the level of comfort. I eventually owned a nearly new 19 diesel (non turbo) on an H plate in 1991. Like my brother's, it was supremely comfortable and it proved to be a very capable motorway cruiser. In addition, I enjoyed the excellent fuel economy of that classic XUD diesel engine (well over 50 mpg without any effort on my part). Both BXs in question proved reliable.Great cars!

When BXs got old one of the common reasons for scrapping them was rust in the hydraulic pipes that run to the rear. They can be replaced ok but the job was a bit fiddly so cost a few hundred pounds and many were scrapped as a result. The rear brakes can also sometimes seize up because they are discs and don't get much use in normal driving as the front brakes take most of the load. Overall they were quite reliable though.....

Love the front end with the little Spoiler and the Yellow Tinted Headlights, although it is allways kind of sad to see one of these Run down like this one is... ...on the other Hand it's getting driven and taken care of, so that's great to see. Just one thing: the "STOP" on the Dashboard isn't like a Check Engine Light, it actually is a light for if something is dangerously wrong with the Car, i think it also comes on when you loose Hydraulic pressure from the Pump while driving.

Thank you Stephanie for reviewing this car. I owned the same model. And as an ex Citroen parts manager I knew every nut and bolt. The BX was best of the marque in terms of reliability and style for the production year. The only downside I can recall for a dealer was having to keep stock of front and rear lights. 4 different suppliers with non interchangable units all slightly different. Siemens,Gemmo,Ferranti, and Ciba. All differentiated by RP number usually stamped on the suspension pillar. The parts operation was hugely complicated with many ongoing modifications on the same model. But that's Citróen for you.

I got a new BX16RS in1988 and liked it so much, I kept it longer than any other car in my 56 years of driving and did over 145K miles in it. When the exhaust went, I got a stainless steel sports exhaust and instantly got better acceleration and another 3 mpg! I really felt at one with this car; you could push it hard, make it slide and it was so controllable and enjoyable. I kept it immaculate and have fond memories of it.

I had a couple of BX19 estates. One of the coolest features is the windscreen washer, which is fed by a pipe along the single wiper arm to the actual wiper blade - just where you need it, rather than spraying over the roof. At each service the garage would fill the fluid and give me half a bottle of concentrate. Next service they would do the same, and I would give away the previous half bottle. Once bought a pallet load of paper and loaded all of it some in the passenger footwell. Dead level all the way home. Only noticed when I had to stop at the lights and the brakes didn't have the usual effect.

I miss my old BX. Watching the video reminded me of why I liked it. At the time all German cars seemed to have very firm seats, British cars were still seen with vinyl seats, only expensive cars had leather, but the BX came with a sort of tweed cloth that was warm and comfy. It was a car that was fairly highly specced with electric windows, and I have a recollection that the sunroof on mine was also electric. It was the only car I've ever crashed (my fault when I rear-ended somebody at a junction at slow speed). As the bonnet is plastic, it was quite surreal watching it snap in half rather than just bend. I was the sort of person who was happy to do my own basic car repairs, so looking after it was relatively straightforward but you did need to build up knowledge of garages and individuals who could re-charge the spheres cheaply or do more complicated repairs rather than go to Citroen. Most people were terrified by the 'complexity' of the hydraulic system, but it was actually quite straightforward, but a lot of garages didn't really want to deal with them. My BX was the TGD17 and not the fastest car on the road, but very comfortable. I bought it cos I wanted a fairly large car and there was loads of interior room in it. What did surprise me was that it was in quite a low insurance group (very important when you live in London and are in your 20s). I would definitely have it back in a flash.

My parents owned a Citroen BX19 TRS and a BX19 GTI. As a kid by far these were my favourite family cars. Both of them took the family to France. They are great holiday cars to cruise in. Although with the BX19 TRS the plastic roof and bonnet faded to a lighter shade of red compared to the rest of the metal bodywork. But still it did not succumb to rust that was a typical scourge of 1980's and 1990's cars.

I think you're most likely spot-on about the BX potentially increasing in value. Look at the CX , 15 years ago it was in the doldrums as far as prices were concerned and then when people started to cotton onto their weird wonderfulness the prices went silly. People who can't stretch to a CX now will be the sort of people who'll buy a BX instead and once it becomes common knowledge that the BX is a similar driving experience to the CX but in a smaller package, the prices will go daft. The CX gained popularity when the price of the DS went up. I reckon it's only a matter of time before the BX goes the same way.

My 1st ever car in the 80's. I had a Red BX TRZ 1.6 version. The cheap air intake pipe used to last about a year before disintegrating. Other than that it ran really well. The grey shaggy material seats were nice and comfy. It also had a funky drop down plastic shield on the dash to hid the radio/tape stereo, as well as the coin holder & ash tray. The rear seats/centre arm rest would fold forward to make an enormous extended rear boot, if you wanted to carry large items in the back. The up/down hydraulic suspension would then kick in & distribute the load for a great ride. The BX was superseded by the larger Xantia. It was ahead of its time.

I think classics even include 90’s stuff such as the Ford Puma, a classic to me is anything you don’t see any more. Most youngsters under 20 have probably never seen a BX. My 1986 Volvo 740 saloon had people gawping at it as people hadn’t seen something so boxy. it was fabulous. My current V70 is 13yo now and got scratches and marks but its part of her character. Too new to be a classic in theory but they are considered old now in modern eyes. She’s called Bev and I love her - I have had 9 Volvos and love them. But I love all older cars too 😍👌🏼

I had one of these.. kinda sad I sold it now. Mine was the estate. Real nice but suspension issues made me sell it. Replaced loads of parts but the thing that killed this car was the fact that Citroen did not use standardised pipe sizes and flare joints. I ended up looking heart with the car as no matter which way I turned it seemed to have been designed in such a way that it was not user repairable. Had big plans for the car, I had planned many long distance road trips but sadly I don't think I'll ever get a car perfect to my needs.

Wow ,nice car. One of my old bosses used to drive one as a rep in the late 80's , he liked it better than his previous company Sierra Sapphire, but not as much as the 520i he got after promotion lol 😊

I never owned a BX, but a workmate had one as a company car so I got to drive it quite a bit. It was lovely and comfortable but the seat upholstery had weird pleats across it that felt like it was grabbing your backside! The other thing I remember (though not BX related) was that it had different number plates front and rear: ‘663’ on one and ‘633’ on the other so if I ever went to fill it up and sign for it on account, I could never recall the registration correctly.

But have you seen the BX19GTi 4X4? I had one for a couple of years in the early 2000's. Apparently, according to the BX expert in Club Citroen, they only sold about 385 RHD examples in the UK. According to How Many left in 2020 Q2 there was 1 licensed and 24 on Sorn.

So you've gotten your hands onto a Citroën BX. Next should be the Citroën XM. Very rare classic, it's been quite expensive at its time, but it's a challenge to find one still working.

What a banger. Talking about which: They where a lot of bang for the buck at the time and reasonably dependable but made from rather cheap materials. On cars parked outside rust already set in after about 100.000 miles (like on the underside of the doors on this car), It was however reasonably simple to maintain. I let my BX14E go for a "budget" XM but I still have fond memories of it. A true "you do not need more then this" car, except of course that it was still fitted with that wonderfull suspension.

Heh, is there such a thing as a 'budget' XM? Beautiful cars but they did have quite the reputation for expensive problems.
@marcbrasse747

@@rich_edwards79 I don't know how things where in England but on the European mainland the XM range was nearly as broad as that of the BX, although of course positioned higher. The most expensive versions where V6's, then there was a 4 cilinder, 150 bhp 2.0 l Turbo and a diesel and nearer to the bottom a normally aspirated multipoint 2.0 l. In the Netherlands a still more simplified version had a single injector in the intake manifold and somehwat less power still. That one cost just below Dfl 50.000 at the time, which would be about Eu 23.000 / 21.000 pound (not correcting for inflation). In France and Belgium they even marketed the Seduction which had no injection but a single carburator and BX / CX type non-Hydroactive suspension. That one was even cheaper. I'd have to check it but I suspect these cheaper versions where on the same price level as the top of the line BX's. As far as dependability is concenred: I have had very little trouble with the 2 normally aspirated 2.0 l's I've owned. That simple mono injection version still had a near to 0 oil consumption after 400.000 km and only went because the rest had become rather tatty. The Turbo seems to be a bit more susceptible but mine also only started to become troublesome after 300.000 km's. I've just put a fresh 190.000 km "only" block froma Xantia in it. Much of the XM's reputation stems from the early versions which where put on the market too hastily (like the DS and CX) and especially the first V6's. Under normal circumstances the more simple versions, so with only few electric gadgets, are however far removed from being a money trap. A small example: On a BX the rubber windowsills start to harden out after about 100.000 km's. On a garaged XM they seem to last for ever. Furthermore: The first troubles with rust only set in after 20 years or so.

Had a couple, one hatch Mk I and one wagon Mk 2. The first one went west with over 325 000 miles on the clock. Brilliant motors and not completely unreliable. The Mk 2 was better and a bit more normal. It helped me move house - you could get so much in there. Could sleep flat out on the floor too. Currently have a C5 wagon with hydropneumatics. I understand why Citroën dropped it but not sure I agree with that decision.

My grandparents bought a new BX in 1990 after my grandad saw it at the dealers (Broach Hill near Driffield in Yorkshire) and wanted it. Theirs was a 14 St Tropez which was a poverty spec special edition with snazzy graphics on the side and a sunroof. They only had it about 18 months as my grandad had a stroke not long after they got it and my gran couldn't get on with it as she was doing all the driving.

Fun fact - this car could have been a Volvo. The Tundra concept was designed for them in the late Seventies by Bertone, but rejected as too radical, so they sold a 4-door version to Citroen instead. I love the cadmium 'selective yellow' headlamps and fogs - a very common sight on Euro cars in the 70s and early 80s (and indeed one that I believe was mandated by French law, similar to the Swedes and their DRLs). I've fitted a set of retro yellow Raydyot fog lamps to my 240 for that period look :) The little Allen key for manual sunroof operation demonstrates remarkable acknowledgement by Citroen of the shortcomings of French electrics. Less a case of 'if it breaks', but 'when'. Same with rust - it's a pity they didn't make those rear quarters from plastic too. Citroen suspension is like nothing else - my ex's Dad had a 1993 Xantia that was like a magic carpet ride. Big Citroens' always looked as thought they'd been slammed when parked up, but of course as soon as you turn the key they rise majestically (provided the spheres are all good, of course!) Nice selection of stickers on the rear window - have you thought about getting some IDAC ones made up?

Id say with the BX most of the time you had to take it to a specialist garage being you needed special tools to work on them ,about the gear change that could only be worn out linkage bushes i suppose as the gears dont crunc so it must be in mthe linkage.

I agree with your thoughts on what is and is not a classic car. My uncle had a 1969 morris minor in 1985. Even then it was considered a vintage car even though it was less than 20 years old. I have a 27 year old charade and it is definitely a classic / vintage car although it looks quite modern
