that's absolutely overkill for in-ear headphones (there are adapters for 3.5mm anyway)

it isn't an overkill, running these balanced opens up the soundstage and transforms the whole sound into a higher level.

Why not USB-C? 3,5mm is so old. Sorry, Sennheiser.

3.5mm is still the default for portable HiFi devices like DAC-amps, DAPs, etc. The IE 300 is for the HiFi enthusiast/Audiophile who rarely uses a straight USB-C or Lightning connection to a phone, but instead to the other devices listed prior, for better signal integrity after conversion from it's digital source. Typical users of an IE 300 often spend as much or more on these components as the headphones themselves. Hope that helps!

No USB connector for higher end audio IEMs, as quality of DAC is important. Once you have a USB connector on the IEM or headphone, you can only use the inbuilt DAC and not the DAC of your choice.
