I scored 7.5 in my speaking. I will not say it's all bz of my hardwork n my practice. Rather I would say 40% of my confident that I had during my exam was bz of the examiner. She made me feel so comfortable. She was so polite n amiable. She even helped me to understand one of the question so that I dnt loose the confidence n carry on with the flow. She made me feel I'm talking to my friend. I wish n hope every candidates get an examiner like her.

14:20 Hi, I'm from Bangladesh. When a student sits for an examination, in Bengali it is called "পরিক্ষা দেয়া" (pronunciation: Porikkha Dea). The word " পরিক্ষা" means "examination" & "দেওয়া" literally means "give". So, the phrase "পরিক্ষা দেওয়া" literally means "giving an exam". On the contrast, when a teacher/examiner examines/tests his/her students, in Bengali it is called " পরিক্ষা নেয়া" (pronunciation: Porikkha Nea). Again, "পরিক্ষা" means "examination" & "নেয়া" literally means "take". So, the phrase "পরিক্ষা নেয়া" literally means "taking an exam". The two verbs "দেয়া" & "নেয়া" are so common & often used & their English meanings are taught at a very early age, that's why there is no hesitation for the Bangladeshis to translate these words from Bengal to English. These phases are so often used by Bangladeshi students that that they almost always translate these phrases from Bengali to English literally.

Exactly! We (at least Bengalis) tend to literally translate these phrases to English, something that has been unconsciously ingrained in our minds. And therefore, you hear "giving exams" instead of "taking exams". Thanks to Nature Enthusiast for explaining it so well.

I just received my results in speaking. I got 8.5 overall in speaking. 9 in listening, 8 in Reading, 7 in writing. 8.0 in my overall average. Some context: I’ve been working in San Francisco for 4 years and they just want me to take it again because I’m going to work to another state. I took the Toefl-ibt when I applied in SF six years ago, and I like it because I’m not dealing with an actual interviewer, and I was fresh off the boat from my country; for my younger-me back then, it was nerve-wracking to speak to a native. When I took it again because of the move, I didn’t reach the needed number for my profession and failed (too much that went on that week as well, stressed me out). I then thought, I interacted with actual native speakers so it might be that IELTS is a better fit for me. And it was. But this didn’t mean I laxed. I practiced for a month, only speaking in English even in my vacation. Sure, my friends and family thought it was weird, but I told them if you want me to earn a lot of money again, then y’all better let me speak in English. I practiced everyday too, answering mock questions from this channel so I can be prepared. So, thank you, deeply. For those who will take the exam, I didn’t finish the whole 2 minutes, my examiner didn’t stop me. She needed to actually ask me another question related to the task 2 just to complete the time. The question I got for task 2 is this: “Describe a time when I need to wake up early.” That was all that I read. I didn’t look at the other questions. It’s easy for me because I actually wake up very early for my work. And I never look at the other questions even when I was practicing. Then for task 3 there are a lot of odd questions that really aren’t connected to task 2, some of them are, but not a whole lot. One of them is the color my friends like nowadays, the others were about responsible people and lazy people. My two cents? Ielts and other English proficiency exams is a lot intimidating for non-native speakers in my opinion. I have years of experience and I was still hella intimidated. The non-native speaker’s future, most of the time, relies on the result of this test. A lot is on the test taker’s shoulders. And it’s needed, especially dealing with special skills-you shouldn’t stutter and take a lot of time speaking in an emergency (I work in a hospital). Good for those who are just doing this for sh*ts and giggles to challenge themselves though. My tips: 1. Spend some time to practice. 30 minutes will do every day. 2. Just speak in English to everyone, it will boost your confidence. Even explaining why you’re doing it helps. 3. Don’t forget about the other exams: Listening, reading and writing, practice them too. 4. Believe that you can pass. Failing it doesn’t mean you’re a failure. You’re smart. Fluency in English doesn’t mean high intellect. Hope this helps.

Giving the exam and taking the exam not only shows the different perspective of the people regarding exam but it also sheds light on the very underlying nature of the society. As an Indian I have always felt that we don’t take exam to evaluate ourselves and to take something from it rather we give exam because we give it for others we want to satisfy the expectations of our parents and family members and also the society, I know excelling in exam helps us and not them but we never give it for ourselves in the first place which in itself is self defeating.

A lot of bangladeshi and south asian students use the phrase "giving the exam" because whatever they say in their language directly translates to "giving the exam". I think the niche in translation comes from the fact that when they take a test, after they're finished with it, they GIVE the exam paper to the supervisor, which is why they say they gave the exam. This is coming from a native english speaker who's also fluent in bangla.

21:56 well I am from Bangladesh and I am "one of the people" who says "giving the exam". I would like to delve into the topic a little bit and try to explain why we use the term "giving the exam." You see, the translation for "taking the exam" in Bengali is literally "giving the exam". In our language system, we use "take" to denote that we are drawing something towards ourselves. While we use "give" to explain that we are giving something to someone. In a sense, in an exam, we generally write on a piece of paper and hand it over (give) to the examiner and that is the exact point from where this reference of "giving an exam" comes from. I hope I was able to clear out some of the confusion regarding the topic.

I would like to give my sincere thank to IELTS Daily because your videos provided an accurate reflection of my speaking skill. I used to be confused a lot about my speaking level because every channel demonstrates a different image about band 8 or 9. I even thought I would get a 7 in my speaking test since some channels assessed their participants' speaking skills without any clear criteria at all. They gave a really proficient speaker an irrational 6.5 or 7. Fortunately, I got an 8.5 overall last week, at my very first attempt, and my speaking band score is more or less the same as the score I gave myself based on your mock tests.

15:50 Okay, I'm from Bangladesh 🇧🇩. The idea behind saying "I am giving the exam" is actually for our local language. For example, in Bengali we often say to our friends, "Dost, exam diyechis?" Here the phrase "diyechis?" literally means, "Did you give?". So, I'd say the usage of "giving" actually came from here.

Hi! I think the reason why Indians say giving the exam and not taking the exam is because it resembles the tone of Hindi language. Since we say ‘hum exam de rahe hai’ and de rahe hai means giving. we do not say exam le rahe hai which mean taking.

Indians use terms like giving an exam because that's how they speak in their native languages. For example, a Hindi speaking student would say, "Mai pariksha dene ja raha hu", which literally translates to "I'm going to give an exam". The most common verb used with the word 'exam' in any Indian language is 'to give'. I have come across many fluent English speakers in my country who would make this mistake unknowingly. The fact that we are taught to speak and write English first by translating our thoughts from our native languages word-for-word also contributes to the development of this habit.

I am from India, I agree that there are so many who get confused between giving and taking. The correct way of saying this is, students take test and teachers give test. Students take class and teachers give class. It is not true that it is acceptable to say giving test instead of taking test in India.

well your videos are very helpful and thank you for your hard work but i just want to make a suggestion. how about having a stricter examiner in a practice test next time? because not every examiner is like mai or maddie, you know they would even interrupt you a lot and remain a straight face during the test. In fact, i met one of those examiners during my ielts speaking test and i freaked out. i wasn’t expecting him to interrupt me a lot. i was elaborating on my answers and he just asked the next question. so, i guess if you have a more realistic video about what to really expect with some examiners during the test, that would help us more. i just want to know why he interrupted me a lot. was my answer too long? or was i repeating the same thing? like that, i was answering my last question (topic 3) and he interrupted me and ended the test, and i would love to see your opinion on that as well.

The speaking mock tests conducted by IELTS Daily are really very helpful for IELTS test takers, and most of them are band 9 videos. A lot can be learnt from these videos, where a test seeker will know that , expressing our ideas, opinions etc, are more important than impressing the examiner. I got an opportunity to watch and learn some useful strategies from students like Saskia, Jed, Elisha and so on. Though they are not native speakers, they could score a perfect 9, which inspires people who are aiming for a band 8 or more. Last but not least, the analysis by Chris during the mock tests is beneficial in the IELTS speaking test and teaches the test taker what exactly shall be done in the exam, and what should be avoided. Unfortunately, there are so many channels out there which mention their speaking videos are band 9 level, which is not actually the case, and the speakers in such channels sound so unnatural and I feel most of the answers given by them are memorised. There are very few channels like IELTS daily, which we can rely on, and for me IELTS Daily is the best among them. Keep up the good work Chris and team, and keep doing these videos. Thank you

Hi Prasad. You are far too kind, thank you! We agree that many of the other channels have rehearsed and highly edited candidates which doesn't reflect the test. I think the confusion about giving/taking a test arises from hindi to english translation. In hindi we say *de* in reference to a test, which translates to give but when native speakers say take, when translated in hindi, changes the meaning of the sentence.

"I'm giving the exam" is actually a phrase which Indians borrow from their respective mother tongues. In most of the Indian languages, we say that "we're giving the exam" and not "we're taking the exam". So maybe this is the place where the fact that people usually think of the conversation in their tongue and translate it to the other language they are speaking it comes into picture.
