We explore the importance of sound character in IEM design and explain why frequency graphs don't tell the whole story. Simon Fisk, founder of Plunge Audio shares his approach to creating in-ear monitors (IEMs) that offer an immersive, emotional listening experience, highlighting the nuances that make music come alive, from the texture of the high end to the spatial details of a recording. Join us as we dive into what truly defines high-quality sound in in-ear monitors.

Love the passion and commitment Simon (and Justin) have towards making sure there IS an experience and not just upselling driver count. Had my plunges for over 10 years now (holy crap!) and still love them as much as the day I got them.

Wonderfully conveyed 👌 My admiration for your work and what you create/produce just doubled 😊 Explaining how sounds have character just instantly resonated with me... I was a classically trained pianist from a very young age (studied under the Royal Conservatory Program until I was 16) and I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to learn/understand/feel the piano through a gorgeous, dark-wood Canadian-made (Toronto) 1899 Mason & Risch upright that my mum had inherited after her grandma passed... From a very young age, I was able to identify and 'feel' how my/our piano felt compared to others - this was how I connected and fully understood the character of my piano. NOTHING else played like it. Throughout the '90s and 2000s I worked in Music Distribution here in Vancouver and my life-long love for music increased with every year being exposed to new music and styles that also conveyed their own bespoke character and nuances - didn't matter if it was electronic breakbeat, old jazz recordings, noise punk, progressive metal or Aussie indie-pop - I yearned to find that bespoke character within the recordings through speakers or headphones.... It wasn't until I discovered IEMs (unfortunately, a set of rather expensive ones that were WAY off budget for me to actually own) that I finally found something that instantly brought tears of joy to myself... I had finally found a device that was resonating my love for music within my actual soul. I was physically dancing and smiling and crying. Since then (about 6 years ago) I still haven't really found an IEM (within my limited life budget) that has re-created that fuzzy, rush of feeling I miss so much. Cheers from Vancouver... I VERY much look forward to the day when I can hear (or own, preferably) a set that you've poured your heart and soul into, to find/tap into that elusive, bespoke character once again.

Thanks for sharing your musical journey with us. We hope you get to feel that magic again someday because, as you know, it's a pretty special feeling. Hopefully it'll be with our IEMs!

"Putting them in, listening to a song I've heard a thousand times and really feeling like I'm actually in the room with the artist. That's the character that matters to me. Whether it's hearing the nature of the guitar and the strings in the guitar and just little characters of it that just feel so real, like the guitar is right in front of me. Or, hearing the space that the artist is singing in, not just hearing the microphone but getting that little touch of the room that they're in or hearing a delay where you can actually hear the delay going off into the distance. Where, where, maybe you've never even noticed there was a delay on the voice and you hear the throw just diffusing off into space. It's those things that make me feel like I'm in the studio where they created it and I can actually get the imagery like I'm there. That's how to me, like I know that you've found it." I couldn't have said it better myself.

Graphs tell a very general story, but as you alluded to, its one of many many factors that goes into good sound.

@@plungeaudio so these eartips paired with the unity are what brings you the enjoyable experience? before the unity only came with spinfit eartips correct?

@@Viewer13128we started with Azla Xelastec and Spinfits, yeah. Always on the hunt for tips that pair well not just sonically but for fit seal and comfort on stage. The sonicfoam offered a pretty incredible seal for stage use, and the Tangzu tips are so great if you prefer a little more high feq response or openess, also so comfy and easy to get in and out. We all have our preferences in all sorts of contexts. We offer what we believe to be two amazing choices that offer differing experiences. Love the spinfit tips too and will carry those with other models.

either one, really depends on preference. i generally lean to a brighter open response, personally. i love a great bass push, but really need the clarity and balance
