Can consciousness be best explained by God's existence? - Professor Peter Simons and Hamza Tzortzis
www.iera.org/events/the-big-de... - This presentation took place on Tuesday 4th March at the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland.
Here, Hamza Andreas Tzortzis in this academic debate with Professor Peter Simons argues that current biological and philosophical explanations fail to explain consciousness comprehensively.
Mr Tzortzis asserts that no matter if we found out everything about the brain and it's neurochemical activity we will never be able to grasp and comprehend inner subjective conscious states. He concludes that God's existence is the best explanation for this phenomenon.

I always find it bizarre when an atheist scientist says, " if there is a naturalistic explanation that means God is not needed." It is as fallacious as me saying, " if I can explain how my laptop works, down to the chemistry, then that means there is no reason for the laptop to of had a maker" Science does not answer WHY anything exists , it simply tries to explain HOW things work. So even if we can explain how something works and outline all its mechanisms from a molecular level, WHY it exists in the first place and adheres to the laws it does can never be answered by science.

It can never be answered by religion either, because all religions will claim to have the answer to why, and no agreement will ever be met because there's no evidence to support any one religions claims over another. I assume that you believe that Islam is the best way to understand why things exist. But why Islam? Why not Sikhism? Why not Hinduism, or Paganism? There's no argument that can be made for any one religion over another, other than faith, and faith doesn't cut it as far as I'm concerned.

Hamza's rebuttal was to the point and made some sense at the end to favour supernatural explanation. I do feel that "matter" alone cannot produce "the mind" , there has to be a "Super Mind" behind the origin of matter . That is why the cognitive dissonance we experience when we ponder over "something from nothing theory".

Ameen. Its a common argument of the atheist to insist God " could have done it better". What's strange is that they reject any theological reason to why they are here ( being tested) then assert what things SHOULD be like if He is a good designer. Its like a child rebuking his parent for not letting him have everything he wants straight away, rejecting the possibility that the parent is trying to teach him a valuable lesson.

Allahu akbar I was contemplating this earlier today and here I find it right on my subscriptions page. I haven't watched the video yet so I don't know if this was discussed but I was thinking about the theory of parallel universes and how scientists say that there are an infinite amount of versions of ourselves. So I was thinking that if there are an infinite amount of copies of me and they are all physiologically the same, then why do I experience only 1 conscious state? Or what if I could produce a clone that is 100% identical to myself, would we share the same consciousness? I can't prove it but I don't think that would be the case so there must be something that distinguishes me from a direct copy of me. Could it be the soul? I can't answer that but I find it extremely thought provoking.

The professor said: That's not the best explanation, consciousness is natural phenomenon and if its natural phenomenon it should have natural explanation? My contention would be why is He assuming that God is not natural, why is science being given authority to define what is natural and what is not, God is natural in His Godliness, do we assume things that exist in sea, microbes in lava, in air and on earth or any other planets if they exist as not natural? In theology God defines Himself through attributes, and a word with definition of "supernatural" is not one of them.

Dear Dr. Hamza Tzortzis, I highly enjoy your argumentative style and admire your broad knowledge. I am a 44 yo Italian, who realized, at age 12, that god is imaginary. I have a degree in philosophy of language and a PhD from Bologna university. I simply wish to point out some (deliberate?) confusion in your standard argument. You confuse the notion of cause and the notion of creation ex nihilo. From the fact that you want to show that the universe had an origin (however, the total mass and energy were already there), you conclude that it had a cause, which is true (nevertheless the hypothesis of an infinite, oscillating universe has not been ruled out). However, you arbitrarily conclude that the universe was created. Causation does not mean creation. My parents caused me, they did not create me. What would become the mass of my body was already there in the universe. This fallacy alone would undermine all of your structure. it simply is an unwarranted move. A non sequitur. Moreover, induction shows us that among ALL the known causes for natural phenomena, ALL of them were natural in kind. The universe is the sum of the known natural phenomena; ergo, most likely, per induction, the cause for the universe is also a natural phenomenon. Appealing to god is equal to admitting our ignorance, resorting to a god of the gaps. I shall overlook the many times you confuse an ontological problem with an epistemological one. Finally, a riddle for you. Either all has a cause, or it is false that all has a cause. If all has a cause, admitting god caused the universe, then also god must have a cause, per the first premise. If the premise is false, then the universe might well be eternal. Its big bang does not mean that the sum of its energy and mass were created. They might have been always there. The idea that all must have a cause but god does not is an arbitrary, illogical choice. A final remark: a belief in god is simply a hope in god. My suggetsion is, from my heart: forget religions, they are primitive forms of superstition, the sense of beauty and amazement in the world needs not rest on some imaginary being who controls our sexual habits :) Be well, keep up with the good work. Friendly regards

Professor Simons I believe should've debated someone with actual knowledge of the subject, a scientist or philosopher would've made for a more interesting discussion.

The Zeitgeist actual knowledge of the subject? The professor basically admits to all of the points hamza made including the criticisms of pretty much all the materialistic explanations! except that God was a good explanation and he applauds to hamza’s openness. So basically that’s proof that even the professor wouldn’t agree with the comment you made. Secondly hamza is actually doing a PHD in philosophy, so therefore your comment just shows your ignorance.

Watching this is like comparing a preschooler taking on the principal..... Irrespective of all the BIG words Hamza uses, it is still nonsense. ... The prof explained things in such simple terms it was so easy to grasp.....

one of the most fascinating things from this video was that the professor briefly explained a few of our bodies evolutionary artefacts/origins, like the jaw, and then Hamza goes up to speak next and says perhaps one day science may be able to explain it.... So he either wasn't listening to the professor, or he just didn't understand it. It's quite frightening to think that this guy is some sort of mentor or aspirational figure for some Muslims.

NCR557 how was hamza wrong? You don’t seem to even have a basic understanding of science. Can the conclusion that these bones are byproducts of a evolutionary process and have no function not change due to future evidences or different interpretations of the current evidences ? Ofc they can! That’s all he was saying. An example in hamza’s defense would be the Appendix ! For decades we didn’t know the functionality of the appendix and assumed it’s just a byproduct of an evolutionary process which is no longer needed but today we know that the appendix is used to protect the good bacteria in the gut and when there is a problem in the gut like diarrhea it releases the good bacteria to counter it. Now the only point of contention in the debate was that is God a good explanation for consciousness and the professor agreed that the philosophical God of the Abrahamic faith should explain consciousness if God is a good explanation and the professor attempted to say that the Abrahamic God is not a good explanation due to the design defects in the body or that God could have done a better job. but that has an assumption! And the assumption is that God wanted to create us without defects or he wanted to create us perfect. That’s not true because we are talking about the Abrahamic God and the Abrahamic faiths believe that God created us imperfect and with defects intentionally. So I would humbly say the professor didn’t know about this and just made a straw man ( no disrespect to the professor because he didn’t know). Hence the professor didn’t show how God is not a good explanation.

Hamza Tzortzis pretty much just finds the gaps in neuroscience and merely claims that magic is the only explanation. An argument of ignorance and personal incredulity.

This is from a person who claims that a book (i.e., the Koran) that claims that inanimate matter like "the heavens and the Earth" also have consciousness.

That's the problem with suggesting "god" as an answer. Saying "god did it" is as much of an explanation as saying "natural causes did it." If you want to make a compelling point you should say the mechanism by which "god" gives us free will & consciousness.

Hamza has very few original ideas on things. He constantly quotes others to support his position, but rarely has his own ideas, aside from random, overly-simplified, non sequitur arguments. This is a huge problem with Muslim/religious scholarship because all of the view are based on consensus rather than real evidence. Therefore, evidence doesn't matter because an old, dead, prophet/philosopher/poet said so... I don't see why he is looked upon as such a great debater. He just uses unnecessarily complex terms in order to disguise the fact that his arguments carry no weight. Long words, complex words, god is transcendent therefore we have everything and the Quran is right because it has unique linguistic attributes which cannot be explained by naturalist explanations, therefore god is real, and Islam is the right religion. Why are the linguistic attributes of the Quran indicative of its hoLogical jumps are his forte... The thing that blows my mind is that many Muslims find him convincing at all, and even worthy of praise when his arguments are so baseless, and contrived. Easily amused? Yes. :(

Perfectly said. I've been watching bits of this guys "debates" for a while and it's really intolerable to sit through. The scary thing indeed, at least based on the comments I read on KZfaq, is that he seems to be revered as some sort of intellectual giant by many Muslims. That is frightening.

For some reason it looks like you made a real effort to construct your comment, carefully picking your words, arranging them and completing them. The interesting thing is that it's nothing short of fallacies, emotions and basically very poorly thought out writing. First of all it's a dumb idea to have to be a doctor (having a PhD) in order to be credible enough to debate someone who is known for their studies in said field. It depends on your knowledge, understanding, research, and background which hamza has for this debate regardless of your emotions. I think he offends you in a way and the other atheists here which makes sense of your derogatory comments rather than an actual addressing of the content. Also the irony is that you're someone who is not nearly versed in Islamic studies let alone scholarship to pass comments on the scholarly tradition. Evidence of your ignorance is that consensus is formed upon evidences and proofs.

Rezwan Hussain well people once also thought that earth was flat. Does not mean anything. Islam is growing because it fits well oppressive countries which hate women and sex. It does not mean that god exists. God is a mental delusion and religious people just hope in some higher power. Hope is not evidence for existence. Sorry. if god's existence were so obvious there would be uniform agreement. But there is not.
