Here I share my thoughts on IEW's writing program for the youngest grades. Bible Heroes is a great introduction to IEW and you would not need to do the parent training, or the Student Writing Intensive before using it. I think this is a great program for kids starting in grade 3 or 4, as long as they are a fairly confident reader. I spread it out over two years, and did the first half in third grade with my son, and will finish it up in his 4th grade year.
When you open it you may be overwhelmed by all the things you COULD do, but remember that you can get a ton out of the program by just doing the writing components of the lessons, and only picking and choosing a few of the enrichment games if it is fun for you and your child!
This program is great to use with siblings who are close in age, or to do with a friend to make it even more fun! It is structured in such a way that you could meet once a week with a friend to do the lesson, and complete the assignment on your own at home. This is what we did and it really made it fun!

Thank you for doing this video Karla! I was interested in IEW but a little unsure of where to start. I’ll have a 3rd grader next year, this should be a good place for us to start. I love the idea of spreading it out over two years. Thanks again!

Hi, I just discovered your channel and I love it! I’ve been curious about IEW’s new program and your reviews are very helpful! My 2 youngest are 8 and 14 but my 14-year-old (both are girls) has some significant learning disabilities. I was just about to purchase level A when I watched this video and now I am rethinking. I already have an unused copy of the other primary grade book (people in the community). Would this be a better option and wait till next year for level A?
@karlacanon2507
@karlacanon2507 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Without knowing your girls, I personally would recommend starting with the People in the Community book that you already have. My third child (also a girl!) is 8, and SSS level A would by waaaaaaay too much for her. I would MUCH rather start gently with IEW, so they can learn and grow to like it, than overwhelm a child with long writing assignments. I really like SSS A for an older, confident child, but some of the assignments are quite long.

This was extremely helpful in determining where I should start with IEW for my upcoming third grade son, so thank you! What else did you use for language arts for this grade? I think I saw that you used spelling you see which we also use, after only seven weeks of notice such a dramatic improvement in my son’s spelling!

Wonderful and very informative video! I plan to start Bible heroes with my third grader. How long would you say the lessons take (daily) if you were to spread out Bible heroes over 2 years? Also, I have a 7th grader that completed 6 months of IEW in the private school he attended before we moved away, then finished off the year with abeka. I am planning to homeschool this next school year and I'm not sure where to start with IEW for him. Is he able to watch the streaming video lesson and complete the work mostly on his own? Or is this curriculum very teacher-led? Thank you!
@karlacanon2507
@karlacanon2507 3 жыл бұрын
I would say for Bible Heroes, we spent about 30 minutes on typically Monday, where I introduce the new lesson. Then it would take about 15 minutes per day (give or take) the rest of the week to just do the writing. For your 7th grader, yes, the should be able to do most of the work on their own! The videos give great instruction. They will just need you to help edit their work, but it's mostly independent. Depending on if they want a more or less challenging program, they could do level A or B of SSS.

Hi, thank you so much for your video! I just received Bible Heroes for my 3rd grade son. He is a quarter of the way done with Fix-It which takes about 20 minutes to do. Is Bible Heroes too much to add along with Fix-it? Do you recommend finishing Fix-it before starting Bible Heroes? I really want to start Bible Heroes while he is in 3rd grade, but not if it's too much. Thanks!
@karlacanon2507
@karlacanon2507 3 жыл бұрын
You absolutely do not need to finish Fix It before starting Bible Heroes! In fact, I personally use Bible Heroes before I even do Fix It. We typically have done book one of Fix It around grade 4 or 5, so you are already ahead of the game! If it's too much for your son to do both (it would have been for mine!!), I would leave Fix It for a bit, and do the Bible Heroes! I think BH is perfect for Grades 3 and 4. :)

Hi Karla! I am interested in Bible Heroes or All Thing Fun & Fascinating for my 3rd and 5th graders next year. My youngest (2nd grade now) is just being introduced to the writing process, while my oldest is a bit more familiar - he has a solid grammar foundation, is a great reader but is a very reluctant writer. He also struggles with focusing on lessons that aren’t “fun” or that last too long. Is there one you would recommend over the other to use for the both of them together? I realize this is an old video, but hope you might see this. Love all of your content. Thank you!🙂
@karlacanon2507
@karlacanon2507 2 жыл бұрын
I think for a 5th grader I would go with All Things Fun and Fascinating, and modify it so your youngest can dictate or copy portions of the writing. That way you can do it with both of them! While I love Bible Heroes, I know my son wouldn't have wanted to do it in 5th grade as he was sensitive about things that are too "young" for him. He's in 6th grade now, and we just pulled out an assignment from ATF&F as he needed something quick to do independently (he has lots of IEW experience). It reminded me how much I love that book! :)

Yes! That is exactly what I would do! I would probably take two years to move through the SSS A for a 5th grader unless they were a very confident writer.

So this is exactly what I’m looking for to use with my upcoming 3rd grader. My question is, what else do you recommend, if anything to add to this to make a complete and well rounded language arts program?
@karlacanon2507
@karlacanon2507 2 жыл бұрын
This covers everything for writing, and we talk about things like capitalization and punctuation as we write, so I feel like at 3rd grade, this is enough for grammar too. If you do this over 2 years, you could add Fix It Grammar book 1 when your child is in 4th grade. We have added Spelling You See for spelling sometimes, but that really depends on how much writing your child can do without being overwhelmed! The only other thing I would think about is how well your child is reading at this age. If they are comfortable with their reading, great! If they still need some instruction, then there's lots out there for that to!! Late this spring I will do a video on what I've done with my 3rd grader this year so you can keep an eye out for that too!

Hi Karla! I am interested in the program (Bible heros) but it I am confused in regards of the brainstorming part,like you mentioned. As a mom my grammar is not greatest, adjectives and verbs can be hard. Does this program guides me through everything I need to teach them? so I don't get frustrated and my kids will have smooth learning experience.

Yes! The teacher guide is very clear, and tells you exactly what to do! If you feel overwhelmed when you get it, don't worry about adding in the games or anything, just keep it very simple and you will find it easy to use! :)

Hi Linsey! We aimed to do the program 4 days a week and that worked for us. You could do it over 4 or 5. I did personally take the TWSS first because I'm an writing nerd and love that kind of stuff, but you absolutely don't need to in order to teach Bible Heroes. It is extremely well laid out and everything you need to know as the parent/teacher is included in it. It's such a great intro into IEW!

Hi Stephanie! We only do copywork for writing in first and second grade. I really like Spelling You See for that reason, as then you have lots of copywork at your fingertips and it's a nice amount each day, but really you could use anything for copywork! We do about a sentence a day (4 or so times a week) in grade 1, and two sentences a day in grade two. That has worked really well for us, and that's how I teach them to form the letters properly as well since I sit with them as they do it.

@@karlacanon2507 ok so you used a bible heroes for 3rd and 4th and then moved to level A in 5th grade… so for 3rd and 4th you used other sources for spelling/etc? I guess what I’m trying to understand is what does this NOT cover?
@karlacanon2507
@karlacanon2507 2 жыл бұрын
@@mcervas Good question! So I use this for writing in grades 3 and 4 like you said. I also use Easy Grammar: Daily Guided Teaching and Review for Grade 2, starting in grade 3. Even though it says grade 2, that is NOT what I would use it for! I use it for grades 3 and 4, along with the Bible Heroes. We also use Spelling You See Level B (book 2 for grade 3) and Level C (book 1) for grade 4. It sounds like a lot, but since I'm spreading all these things out over 2 grades, it actually works out really well! We certainly don't do all of them in one day either! We mix it up and try to keep it fun. How much a child can handle in a day really varies within my own family, so I base it off of them as I want my kids to be challenged, but not frustrated. :)

Basic parts of speech are woven into the lessons. Other than that it is a writing curriculum more than grammar. That being said, when my kids were young, it was enough for us, and we just focused on writing in complete sentences, punctuation, etc. Doing more formal grammar instruction when they were older worked well for us!
