Audio reading of the poem If by Rudyard Kipling, read by Michael Caine with Sweet Dreams sang by Emily Browning. FOR A SCHOOL ASSIGNMENT. Needed music to go with the poem.

It's a long stretch to aim at, but I've always kept a copy of this in my desk and remembered it as what I SHOULD try and be.

Ranks as one my favourites. Shame about the music though, Machael.

I was wondering why people had clicked on dislike thinking 'what's not to like?' then I heard that God-awful music. I stopped the vid 20 seconds in, wrote this comment, then went to find a better version on here...

I didn't look at the likes/dislikes first but tried intently to listen to this audio file with a pic (1st strike, this isn't a video) but found the music intensely distracting, making it very difficult to hear what he was reading (often louder that the narration, the admittedly much larger strike against it). I then felt honor bound to dislike it in the hopes that by so doing it might help others avoid it.

Out of other recitation, Michael Caine is the best.

Love the poem, hated the music though. All wrong for the poem's tone IMO

I don't like the music in this context, but it does sound cool. What are the tracks called?

The poem is a special one.Music no, though I know some quiet Bach pieces that might have been complimentary.

Doesn't need any music. All it does is subtract from the poem. Caine is more than enough to get the point across just by himself.

Although this is a great poem I find the line about betting it all and losing strange. Say you go to a casino and lose all your money. That doesnt make you a man, it makes you stupid

In 1895, I don't think Kipling was referring to a Las Vegas or gambling in the modern sense,

I take it as saying: If opportunity knocks, if life gives you a chance to have your dream, are you willing to take it? Are you willing to take the chance, fail, and lose everything in pursuit of something you know was the right choice? Your car, money, friends, "J"O"B", ect? Are you ok with risking everything and, if the dice falls that way, losing it all?

I grew up to this poem. As a young Royal Marine I found that it epitomised the Commando Spirit.
