Whenever people talk about their dream cameras it always feels to me like they are speccing up a smartphone. Walled gardens, and short lifespans, feel almost inevitable once things like airdrop are added. Which features will still work in 10 years? Personally, I've been hoping that someone picks up where Ricoh left off with the GXR line. A modular camera system that can be extensively customised. Your dream camera is probably more realistic.

My perfect dream camera would be my GX85, but with PDAF, that sony multi-angle type of screen shown in the video (but GX85 display) and my canon 6D battery life (up to 2000+ photos with one charge). A bump in resolution would be nice. And, of course, FF if somehow we could keep the size and weight of m43 lenses (it has to be pocketable at least like the GX85 is with the 14mm, the 20mm and the 12-32mm).

Combo range-finder style meets regular LCD / viewfinder...try setting the X-T5 (and other Fujifilm cameras at least) into Sports Finder mode (need to be in mechanical shutter mode). Will result in a 1.29 crop, but gives you a "rangefinder" type visual where you can see things outside of frame. Cheers

The Xpro3 is my dream camera. I got it recently and have been manual focusing and have been loving my photos more than how they look with AF. Maybe it's the nerd it me that loves being hands on, but it is so much fun to use. Though it isn't perfect, it has everything i personally want. I hope if they make another they put in the 40MP censor thats in the new 100VI and the swivel backscreen from the HS-2 and that would be a perfect camera to me

I have recently switched to a Lumix S5 (first generation) and I love that camera to bits. What I would keep from it: - HW: IBIS, grip, buttons, dual-card, viewfinder, sensor (FF) - SW: button configuration (you can assign any function to all but 2 buttons...), menu, color science, mobile app (although a bit glitchy, better than most of the other options) What I would change: - lens mount: only 1 3rd party (sigma) and the lenses and accessories are a bit more expensive than for other mounts (same lens is usually 5-10% more expensive) - frame rate for raw (20 instead of 8) - small bump in MP: ~40 instead of current 24. It's getting really annoying to process large images in lightroom, so not to big

I LOVE Designing Concepts, not visually doing it yet but I did some back in Nokia's good days for phone, did one for Black Berry too, for Sony Ericsson's too. And just 3 days ago I did sketch my dream Sony Rx100 'X' because entire of last month I spent search Rx100 VII, a used one but could not find in city where I live. And so my concept designing gears start spinning to research if a new camera of that type is still needed, turned out yes, and so what would make it appealing to a large audiences, so on. I have many other concepts, for the cameras too.

I agree with you and to have a dream camera made up of everything you love about other brands. For me the leaf shutter, switchable EVF/OVF AND customisation of the x100v/fuji cameras but build quality of the Nikon Zf and full frame. Not too worried about number of pixels but must have the ability to pixel shift for the odd occasion. Not sure what mount I’d have and agree Sony has a huge amount of options when it comes to lenses however I also like the larger mount on the Z! Dreams are good for the soul not the wallet 😂

rather than going with USB-C (which means your camera becomes electric waste as soon as the battery is dead), I would prefer all cameras to go to a standard battery format like 18650s. No more sourcing obscure batteries, replaceable and with better battery technology coming, you can just keep the same format. Much like my canon 6D came with a different battery type than my 90d, but they're still compatible. same with internal storage, additionally, yeah, but solid state storage has a limited lifetime. I love how I could just put some AA batteries into the 30 year old nikon F-401 my aunt left me and it worked just like new

Love/hate the X-T5 … so many good things everyone points out. I lost a day to underexposure, following an inadvertent twist of the exposure compensation dial shooting autoISO wide open with motion-stopping shutter speed. Or I could have just looked at the dial and thought about what I was doing, which is actually the whole point of the X-T5. Front & rear dials highly customizable. Grip not quite deep enough without (readily available) accessory. Had to disable one button I coudn’t learn not to press inadvertently, plenty of physical controls left in all the right places. Would be nice to have Quick Menu access to bracketing options, in addition to physical dial to turn on Bracketing. I want to bracket focus or film sim about equally often. Maybe could put them in different Quick Menus-have to check on that.

I want a viewfinder that can flip up to allow for top down viewing and then flips back in to be like a fairly standard viewfinder, I want this in addition to my flippy tilty any direction screen. I'd also like to see something where you have your controls attached to the sensor body with a rotating rosette mount like a smaller version of the c300's control grip... and a grip for both sides that are optional so I can run it from either side or both... and when using both it should give me servo zoom control.

I don't know, I have a lumix, a sony and an old canon EOS. The Canon feels like it wouldn't mind some a use and it has indeed been dropped the most, even tumbling down a rocky faroese mountain, yet it's the only one that needed repair. The sony went in for repair three times already and I haven't even dropped it once. The Lumix doesn't feel like it would like to be dropped even if (or because of?) is made of some metal but so far not a scratch from the drops it had. Feel is a weird thing

I'd like a camera pretty much the same as my Lumix S1R, but maybe 25% smaller and lighter. The 3 way tilt is my favourite implementation of a back panel; the EVF is large and high resolution, which is vital for all the manual focus glass I use; 47ish megapixels is a great file size for cropping without going absolutely bonkers; and it's beautifully comfortable in hand. The size and weight are usually fine, but are sometimes tricky for travelling or longer walks.

Mine would be a full frame version of the XT5 now I've gone into the medium format area and I love it. I loved my Fuji GFX 50 S Mark two, and I still have my FujifilmXT5, but I almost wish there was a camera in between there is the GFX 50 R but it doesn't have stabilisation and that is a really nice thing to have once you've had it so my dream camera would be a Fuji film full frame camera with 45 megapixels and stabilisation because that's what I wanted to do, I was initially with Nikon. But I decided to dabble in Fujifilm and I liked the colours.. Also love the way the Fujifilm cameras felt in my hands just the ergonomics they suited me. I don't mind saying this I actually have a little bit of dyslexia. So for me the operational system of a camera is actually really important to my workflow. It has to jail with my brain, it's not a disability it's kind of just a thing really my son has it as well and I'm fine but what's really important is how the camera operates in my hands and just the dials suit me to a tea. I just wish there was a full frame version of the XT5 but there isn't so I went for the GFX 50s ii and I do love that camera. Actually I really do. I've taken some amazing images with it and medium format is a whole new ball game and it is just beautiful the images out of it adjust so down sexy, so darn beautiful that you can't go back once you've had a GFX you don't wanna go back!! I would also like my camera to have a voice command search system for something in the menus. You can simply talk at it will go to the menu that you are looking for. Seriously 100 dollar or £50 smart phones have this feature??? One cheap guys and not enough you know these James, but you shouldn't charge your camera with a USB-C, even though it is optional .. creates significant heat in the camera. I totally agree about 10 TB internal storage. I don't understand storage is really really small. You can get a 2 TB SD card now that is tiny. Marked is much better because then you can just see what setting you're on. Otherwise what's the point of having the dials? I don't get it if you can't see it then you just using the electronic viewfinder to work out what your settings are that doesn't make any sense at all. It's much better to actually be able to look down on the camera and see what setting it is, that is so much better and honestly, you'll love the XT5 just a low light performances a bit meh

You can tell because it has a sticky-outie bit on the front. If you bought used it probably didn't come with one because most people ditch theirs. It's the first thing I buy with a used camera. There are cameras I’d like to spend some time with like the Nikon zf, that little square hassleblad and a few others both film and digital. My dream camera has a couple side notes is it for day to day or is it for serious work? I can work with what I have and if I were to upgrade there’s plenty on the market to chose from so I guess my dream camera is more a day to day, I’d have to build it up though. I like the body of the canon m6 but I’d like it a touch bigger to work on the rf mount. I’d like it to have an evf built in and I’d give up the flash to have it. I like the dials from Fuji x100 series, Full frame ideally and weather sealed with the tilty screen from just about any canon. In my mind it’ll fit in a bigger pocket with the more pancake primes in the rf mount like the 16 or 24. I think that would compete with Ricoh and Fuji for street cameras and if the price isn’t crazy would bring so many people in from using a phone over the r100.

Nikon has been close to perfection for me. Quality built and quality image. There a bit of learning curve to new comers but is very intuitive after you learn it. For mount I actually would pick Nikon Z mount. Sony lenses can be used on Nikon Z mirrors less cameras

My dream camera doesn't exist. It's basically a mix of the top features and performance in a small, light, vintage looking and highly ergonomic body. We're getting there! A few more years and small cameras won't have so many compromises as we are already seeing a glimpse these days.

I would be satisfied if Sony could use the godd*amn gyro dato to autostraighten the horizon in lightroom. That would safe me so much time.

The Canon RP has the ability to be charged with USB-C to a battery bank or a normal cigarette lighter type power adapter for your car. That's a good thing, though, because it plows through batteries like a kid with a bag of candy.

We're down in Cornwall later this year. Anywhere you'd recommend visiting for walking and scenery?... some photography too, if I must. 😉 Oh, my dream camera is my eye. Sling an implant in that which captures what I see as I see it and that'll do. Eezy peezy!

Yes genius idea. A new camera where 3 dials on top and all buttons are unmarked as they are all customisable.

Choosing Sony FE mount is a rather weird one (especially it being no-brainer choice) - Nikon Z mount has the shortest flange distance, therefore besides numerous native and 3rd party glass, you can use lenses of almost any mount (Sony E, Leica M, Fuji X, Canon EF, Contax G, Nikon F etc., you choose), yes, with AF as well. So in terms of the possibilities, actually the Z-mount would give the largest amount and variety of glass to put on the cam(e)ra. 😁

Several of the major brand camera batteries are two 18500 cells in a proprietary case. I'd love a camera that ditches the case and just takes 18500s, which are inexpensive and (relatively) easy to source. I also want to be able to assign minimum shutter speed for aperture priority, in third-stops, to a dial. Sony is up to four dials. Why can't one of them be that?

Ooooh noice! I recently did a vid about how getting a GFX 100R with OVF/EVF would be great too. Love the hybrid evf. I wish Fuji would get daring like when they first released the Fuji X100 again...

@@judasssona GFX 100R but with OVF/EVF hybrid instead of only the evf, that would be a bold move. I'm not sure if it would be a successful one, but I would love it.

@@gfxced fuji did compact medium format film cameras before. They can do it another time. Unfortunately, cameras are no longer a lens, a shutter and a film holder anymore. Nevertheless I believe a GFX100 would have a market, a very niche one of course.

Not defending the annoying hotshot message, but that thing should have a cover on it if you go out in rain or snow. I think that is a weak point on at least some cameras when it comes to water. Does Sony cameras not provide one with their cameras? Fuji does and I thought it was standard for all brands.

As a backpacker photographer, lighter is better for me. Would be nice to see cameras use more carbon fibre in their designs. It's frustrating for example that the Nikon Z8 is significantly heavier and larger than the Nikon Z7. Smaller full frame cameras please!
@athmaid

Carbon fibre doesn't take impacts well, it tends to crack and delaminate. Not great for a device that needs to survive a fall or two sadly. Magnesium and titanium are probably the best bet still

The closest "real" camera built by Apple you could get is the Leica M designer by Jony Ive. I know it's not technically by Apple but it's close. My favorite designer try is the M9 Titanium by Walter da'Silva.
