For a brand-new runner, I recommend a high-cushioned shoe first. It forces them to run slower, work on their heart rate and reduces foot injuries.

An excellent video. I currently am running in the Hoka Mac4 and Clifton 8 and ASICS Novablast 3 as daily trainers. ASICS Evoride 2 for tempo runs and most recently a 10K race. Hoka Carbon X is my half marathon and marathon shoe. Hoka Torrent is my trail shoe and is excellent for trail races. A lot of shoes I admit, but I bought them over a 2 year period. I've found that using different daily trainers is excellent injury prevention.

Yeap!! That’s exactly what I recommend, buy a great great shoe from last year, and that money that you save, use it for good running clothes 👍🏼. They are so many options. And also, if you have one of this stores close to you Ross, Marshall’s, Burlington, Macy’s and maybe your local running store, they also have great discount prices when they are trying to have space for new shoes. Good luck out there 👍🏼

Good video to help newcomers to plan and have a better overview on their new purchase. Best advice as mentioned is to start running. What shoes to buy come later. Super happy with my decision, Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit (2019), Saucony Endorphin Speed (2020) and Brooks Hyperon Tempo (2021), which fit into all the various needs Speedwork, Cushioning, Training. Added Adidas Adios Pro 3 2 weeks ago, although I don’t do competitions.

Good advice! I coach a learn to run group and many people always ask. I generally say, "walk into a store and walk for a neutral daily trainer and if the people at the store can't answer that, or stutter, walk away immediately". I've been recommending the clifton lately and tell people "if it feels slow, get the mach 4/5. If you think you need some stability then get the arahi"

I'm new to running (1 year): here is a consumer smart route to go - 1. watch shoe reviewers like Kofuzi, Seth Demoor, and believe in the run. They offer great insight on any shoe u may have interest in. Buy at discount, go one year older. And go with a "tweener" daily trainer that can go any distance at any speed. My wife and I BOTH went with New Balance 1080v11. AFTER a quick breaking in of the shoe. We both love them! It's my wife's only running shoe (4 miles a week) and 1/3 of my current rotation runs. Which now includes Saucony Endorphin Speed 2 and NB SC Trainer v1.

I started this running journey with the following: Nike Invincible 2, New Balance Fresh Foam V4, Nike React Miler 3, Nike React Infinity Run 3, and Saucony Triumph 19. As a heavy runner coming in at 282 lbs after much research I figured I would get some max heavy cushioned shoes with different foams in order to mix it up. Did my first 2 mile today on the Nike Invincible 2 and I felt great. For tomorrow workout, it will be the Fresh Foam V4, and so forth.

Check out the rabbit (runinrabbit) offerings. Ko races in their Speedster half tights which have two stretchy side pockets capable of holding almost all phones in cases and a rear zip pocket. I race in the women's version of those, called Leggy's, and don’t experience a bounce issue at all. Lots of gels can fit into the side pockets. If you’re looking for a super light shorter short, check out their Smashem's. The waistband is essentially like a built in Nathan belt-Entirely pockets all the way around. Both of these are 3 season items so probably not available right now in the dead of winter. I know Ko also like Path Project shorts as well, which probably have plenty of pockets.

Also, last year's models in 2023 is waaaaay diff than last year's models when I started getting into running shoes precovid. A lot of small changes now. a lot of previous gen shoes arguably better than current gen as well.

If I had to choose one shoe, I'd go back to Marshalls in early 2020 and buy every pair of Adidas Solar Boost (2018 version) they had on sale for $30 and stick with that shoe. But I'm a heel striker at plodding jogging pace, and flatfoot midfoot striker at tempo pace. The Boost in the heel gets a lot of work under my feet. The only shoe I've tried in a store that appealed to me like the Solar Boost was the Saucony Triumph 20. It's on my list. Second choice, Nike Pegasus 39. And I probably should buy another pair or two while they're available. Not as cushy as the Solar Boost, but better all terrain outsole, a bit more midfoot padding to cushion against gravel. I would have picked the Under Armour Hovr Sonics as second, but UA just announced they're discontinuing the Bluetooth sensor and support for realtime feedback via the Map My Run app. That's a shame. It was a great option for new runners to establish a healthy running form and avoid injury. I've tried the Saucony Endorphin Pro and Speed and just didn't get along with them. Hated the Adidas SL20 - upper and fit were great, Lightstrike is an abomination. Atreyu base model was too wide for my narrow feet. Adidas Adizero Prime knit is okay on pavement or track but the Boost midsole is too thin for most longer runs. Hoka Mach 4 was oh-kay but nothing special. Ditto Brooks Ghost 15 - meh, don't see the appeal. Saucony Guide 15 was annoying, but I don't need an aggressively supportive stability shoe.

I just ordered the triumph 20 runshield version after trying on the regular version at my local running store. Hope they feel as good as they did in the store. I'm coming off a severe heel injury so hoping these will work.

I am trying to get the best value for money when buying shoes. Currently I got Glideride 3 for about 100$ that I use for long runs, Puma Velocity Nitro 2 as a daily trainer for about 50$ and Adidas Adios 6 for about a 90$ for faster sessions. Now I am looking for my first racing shoe and I saw Puma Deviate Nitro Elite Racer for about 110$-120$ online. Would you think that's a sensible choice for first racing shoe?

If I could only recommended one pair it would be the Asics Novablast 1. These are good for tempo work, daily training, long runs and I have even used them for racing. I've ran a marathon in them

Hey Ko, I've been training in Brooks Adrenalines since I started marathons 10 years ago. I haven't been super thrilled with the most recent editions, so I'm considering changing it up. I raced my last marathon in the Saucony Endorphin Pros and LOVED them, so I was considering the Saucony Guide (which seems to be the closest match to Adrenalines), but I'd be going from a 12mm drop in the Adrenalines to an 8mm drop in the Guides. I'm not currently training for anything, so I'd be starting fresh, but what considerations should I make for changing drops like that? Is it a bad idea?
@kofuzi
@kofuzi Жыл бұрын
I think people overthink changing the drops of their shoes. going from 12 to 8 will be noticeable, but won't be a problem for most people. if you think you are experiencing issues, consider finding some running routes that are softer and/or have some easy rollers until you adjust.

I'm looking for racing shoes to use for HIIT on the treadmill: cycles of high speed intervals followed by short recovery periods. 30 min-45 minute sessions, 3-4 times a week. I still quite haven't found what I'm looking for yet. So far I have been using the Mizuno Sayonara. They're OK, but it's not quite it. My search is still underway. FYI I'm 5,9', 155 pounds.

What shoe in the hoka line up would you say is the pure road version of the torrent 2? Have had the Clifton 6 and 8, Mach 5, but I still enjoy the torrent 2 as it seems to fit my feet almost perfect. Rocket x looks like the torrents faster sibling but I don't want a daily runner with carbon plate in it..

the sad part is many shoes are already discontinued. so the question should have been been rephrased by ending with the word “today” or “2023”., implying availability. then you can have a separate video where you can discuss the same topic but have access to all past shoes. if you could pick any shoe based on past experiences, which shoes would you pick and why?

Hey Kofuzi, thanks for all the good content! I'm about to run my very first marathon and I'm not currently trying to purchase a strictly marathon racing shoe. I've been training in the New Balance More V4 and the Hoka Bondi 8. I ain't trying to break any records nor run a sub 3 hr marathon, I just want to have a good running experience and finish the race. Do you believe that any of those will get me there safely? Thanks!
