I was in Boston last week for the whole week. As I was walking from my hotel to the meetings every person I came across I said good morning/afternoon too, even a few "How y'all doing?" - not one person in 5 days answered back EXCEPT this homeless dude when he answered "Well I've had better days!" - I went into the restaurant and had my supper and bought a second one to go and when I walked out he was still over by the tree and I gave him that second supper. Told my meeting host about talking to people and he just laughed and said he'd liked to have seen that in person. Couldn't get out of there any quicker than I did.

@@jonadabtheunsightly While I agree with you about hating hot weather, you seem to be confusing the Southern US with Central American jungles. I THINK we know what they’re called, bein’ as how we came up with them, and ain’t nobody around here calls it a ‘buggy’. ‘Shoppin’ cart’ is its proper name, because that’s what we, the Southerners who invented the darn things, decided to name ‘em! A ‘buggy’ is what you use to transport a baby, or fancy horse-drawn vehicle used for romantic dates, weddings, and lookin’ at Christmas Lights! I was born in the south but pretty much all my southern family moved up north as soon as they could find a way out. His people not only stayed but have a street named after them and only they live on it. They are legends in that area of their state for being backwoods crazy but if I offer to make and bring food to a family when I hear they've lost a loved one, my hubby thinks I'm crazy. Maybe it's because we live in the North-east but still it's the thought that counts right? Just goes to show you can't always tell who has a southern card after all. 🤣😆😆

I’ll argue that not waving makes him more credible as a southerner

It's kind of famusing. As a Midwesterner who lived part of my early life in the Deep South, I've always felt that Southern interpersonal skills were deficient by Midwestern standards. There is a reason they talk about Iowa Nice and Minnesota Nice. There is a laidback and informal affability in the Midwest that is far less common in the South where there is a more formal cordiality, at least with strangers. Southerners tend to be more clannish and hence holding all others at a distance. My family was never fully accepted by our Southern neighbors, not even after 20 years, though the neighbors went through the formal expressions of neighborliness. For example, one lady invited my mother over for coffee, but it became obvious that she didn't actually mean that my mother should come over. In the Midwest, an invitation like that would be literal. There is no Southern equivalent of a Midwestern welcome wagon.

I call BS. I'm from the Midwest and live in the South now and I NEVER get a courtesy wave when I let someone in. I always give a courtesy wave out of habit.

I would not dare to be so presumptuous as to suggest where this rates on the *Southern Scale," but one sign that someone is from a small Southern town is this: when i was in college, I when to see my parents for the day (college and hometown were about 50 miles apart), and I took a friend with me. My friend noticed, as we drove through town, that I waved at certain houses, even though there was apparently no one on the porch or in the yard; she asked me about this, and I explained that these houses belonged to family friends. I waved because, that even though I could not see someone, they might be able to see me (maybe they were lurking in the azaleas, or peeking out from behind lace curtains), and if they saw me not wave, then they would think, " Well! He's too good to be friendly, now he is in college! He was raised better than that!" Were as, if they saw me wave, they would think, "Well, Frances and Bob raised that boy right! I swear he is just the nicest thing!" Oddly, my friend, who was also a Southerner, but from a small city, could not understand.
