In 1v3 minigames, if the sole player wins, they're the only one who gets coins. If the sole player loses, they're the only one who _doesn't_ get coins. That means that your escort target does get coins, but that benefit gets neutralized by the fact that your opponent's target _also_ gets coins, and it becomes a negative when your opponent also gets coins (which they can use to buy items and raise the tolls). If you're the sole player in a 1v3, even when escorting a computer player, you should definitely still try to win.

When it's 1v3 and you're the 1, you still should want to win. Losing means your opponent and their partner get coins and only your partner gets coins. Your opponent wins more in that scenario.
