If you're sitting with a 20 series card, you might be just the audience it sounds like AMD is hoping to reach. You're going to need PCI gen 4 and reBAR to take full advantage of this thing, I'm pretty sure, so if your other components are lagging a bit you might need to upgrade those. This generation doesn't sound like they're aiming for 4080, let alone 4090 performance. But if they can deliver 3080/3090 performance at good price points without breaking the bank or lighting something on fire … they're gonna sell a lot of them.

I doubt very much the multichip design is more expensive to produce. That is actually the main reason they went that route: Because it makes the yields MUCH higher due to smaller chip sizes. A defect anywhere in a chip will render the chip either unusable or at best only usable in less profitable chips. With smaller chiplets compared to large monolithic chips they reduce the area of each chip to a quarter. If you then look at the size of a wafer the number of defects is sort of a given. So some chips will become unusable and the number is more or less the same no matter the size. So with multiple smaller chips you can end up with a yield of 85-90% compared to something like 40-60% with monolithic chips. So if AMD ends up being cheaper than nVidia the multichip design is very likely the very reason for that.
@jesh879
@jesh879 Жыл бұрын
For the top end parts that actually use MCM, yes. AMD also has a habit of using smaller die sizes and this time around, they are using a cheaper process at TSMC. They also have focused on performance per mm² of die space, as well as efficiency. In other words, the exact opposite design objectives as Nvidia. AMD will have great margins on these cards. But it's not just because of a single technology. It's because these products were engineered flat out *better* than Nvidia's.

Produktion of the silicon is much cheaper than Nvidia, smaller overall die size, cheaper nodes, higher yields. Packaging however is more expensive. In the end it's a simple math problem. There's probably a good reason to stay monolithic for the lower SKUs with smaller die sizes

Also regarding the point that the chiplet design may be more expensive to produce. If anything I'd say it's likely the other way around in total board production costs. Similar to Ryzen, it allows AMD to standardise the silicon found across multiple product ranges. The exact performance behaviour of that silicon can more be controlled on a software level without needing physical adjustment as it goes through the quality vetting process to decide what series range each manufactured piece gets allocated to. When AMD say "xxxx series has yyy cores" they can literally just talk about the number the card BIOS software will leverage, not necessarily the physical count present if they wanted to go that route. It's really a question of cost vs saving at each stage of the process of manufacturing a 'one size fits all' chiplet design if AMD stick to pure software limiters or reallocate some of the larger production process savings back into physical adjustments during the process.

The whole point of moving to a chiplet design is to make it cheaper, through improved yields. The larger an individual die is, the more likely it is to contain defects. Chiplets require an interposer - which itself is a large die - but it's an older, much cheaper and reliable process node with large features, so the yield is extremely high there.

AMD's software has been very pleasant for me personally, and I recently tried my hand at undervolting my 5950X (it saved as much as 50 WATTS while keeping identical performance - do note that I did this with Ryzen Master and not through BIOS, which supposedly tanks performance)

What works really well for me with 5950x is using PBO, setting the limits to "Disabled" (so it'll use the defaults), then sorting Curve Optimiser. Thermals + wattage + performance is SO MUCH better. I use it for compiling code across all cores and runnings things that use all cores (data analysis etc) and it's amazing. Can't wait for the 7950x to sort itself out (pricing, thermals via delidding etc) and I'll upgrade.. that performance is crazy.

My gaming demands aren't really that high, so I'm completely fine with waiting for cards that keep it to 350W TDP or less when I need an upgrade. I bit the bullet during the last gen to get my machines where I wanted them, so I'm probably not going to really be in the market for anything until at least 2025, but I'm very interested to see where the two companies have gone direction wise, and if Intel can make a more relevant card by then as well. The main thing is I don't want to have to upgrade any of my PSUs beyond 850W just to support the systems I'm running with them, so I'm liking the sound of AMD more and more right now.

@OGPatriot03
@OGPatriot03 Жыл бұрын
@@Alucard-gt1zf What an insanely ignorant comment.... Nvidia did NOT invent "nearly everything to do with raytracing" what BS. For anyone who isn't a kid we remember back in the days of GCN vs Maxwell where Nvidia dominated in gaming performance but AMD did better in hardware rendering for productivity which is what? Path Tracing, the same workload of real time path tracing incorrectly branded as "ray tracing". The Reason AMD took that lead here was because of their wider architecture with more cores and memory bandwidth, Path Tracing unlike rasterization performance scales LINEARLY with cores and that favored AMD's wide architecture approach. AMD was criticized for not specifically designing a GPU made for gaming from the ground up, which they proceeded to do with RDNA. So if Path Tracing favors more cores what's so special about Nvidia's leap in real time path tracing performance starting with Turing? Hardware accelerated BVH generation which is a technique that significantly reduces the number of calculates required to find where a ray hit an object, GCN has no such ability but RDNA 3 does. Remember when I said Path Tracing scales LINEARLY with cores? Chiplets. In the future thanks to AMD's investments in chiplet architecture AMD can place an absurd amount of cores on a GPU which will be perfect for the Path Tracing workload. It's good they haven't neglected raster performance though, because we're still not ready for full path traced games and even if we were people will expect their shiny new GPUs to still run their older games, again, an advantage of the chiplet approach which Nvidia WILL use in the future too. Imagine a GPU with multiple Path Tracing chiplets and a single Raster chiplet for backwards compatibility with older games. DLSS 2.0 only excites me on Quality mode where the performance gains are less impressive but visuals are more or less intact and DLSS 3.0 is a bad gimmick due to the innate inpute latency it adds besides decimating image quality.

In theory the chiplet design would work best in productive workloads but I think it's on software developers to better support. Imagine a pro GPU made for HEDT users with 4 or even 8 chiplets. If the architecture is scalable beyond 2 chiplets then it'd be feasible, but that'd be one expensive GPU.

But my pc is powered on atleast half the day with minimal load (browsing, music and video playback). Mid tier parts these days during idle are fairly efficient. You can probably look up power draw videos about each part you want. I have a 10700k and a 6800xt and each part uses less than 100w when just watching videos. I thnk my processor uses like 40w and my gpu uses like 60-80w depending on video resolution. @thomaswiegele9802

@@herrsalz278 I would then advise to change step by step. Your 1080 is enough for the type of games you are playing and it can still play Cyberpunk without raytracing. But you could change the rest if you feel it's getting old or buggy. For example change your 4790k for 13600k. With that will come a new Mobo, CPU fan and Ram which should solve most of your issues. You are already looking at something around 500 and 1,000$ depending on the components you select (ie. a B660 + DDR4 vs a Z790 + DDR5) with a super decent improvement without a huge impact to your idle consumption. Then just in case you want to get a new gpu in 2-5 years, you should get a 750-850W PSU.

radeon is great and has long been my favorite of the two cards, but SO MANY 3d programs have some sort of nvidia specific aspect of their program that its difficult to do 3d modeling and animation from start to finish with an AMD card. This IS changing, blender, ue5, etc, are all more or less gpu agnostic software, but I'm still transitioning to those types of software and at this time STILL have to use software that is nvidia dependent. Sure. you can use any 3d software with radeon. But the render times and speed are cut off at the knees, and even if everything IS comparably fast, there's often glitches and bugs during use due to the programs being nvidia optimized but not amd optimized. Hopefully long-term giant intel entering the market will help balance the playing field as far as nvidia's stronghold on the 3d development side of things. Because I LIKE things like Iray and cuda optimization in a program, but AMD, in my humble opinion, if you can use it in a truly gpu agnostic environment where the software isn't nvidia biased, radeon has always been more stable. Good luck finding the handful of programs that are truly unbiased in 3d development though.
