The one thing I always liked about American Motors Corporation is how they proudly displayed there racing colors red white & blue! As only AMC could & my father & brother where proud owners of the 2nd gen. Javelins.

Of all the cars I have owned over the years (and I'm 69), the only car that still talks to me is my '74 Javelin. It had the 304 V-8 and was an incredible cruising car. It generated many positive comments and respect! Unfortunately, a gal ran a stop sign and totalled it..... Heavy sigh! Great video - thanks!!!

My first car was my dad's 63 Ambassador 880. In 1973 I purchased my first car: A green with black hood 1970 AMX 360 with Go Package 4-speed and 3.73 posi. Except for Micky Thompson tires, and hi performance clutch and brake pads it was stock. It was quick and drew lots of attention even from Vette, Camaro and Mustang owners. Most fun I ever had with a car. - more than my late model Z28 or Corvette.

I own both a '69 AMX 290 4bbl automatic (only 299 made!) and a '73 Javelin AMX 360 4bbl automatic. I actually prefer the '69 over the '73, but both are fun to drive (had the '69 out for awhile this afternoon!). What I don't understand is why all AMX's didn't come with Twin Grip by default from the factory - neither of mine have this option (yet, but both will within the next 3 years). I bought the '69 in Feb 2020 after 25 years of wanting one, and acquired the 73 later in the year. I have a lot of fun with both at local cruise-in's and just driving them around. As someone once said, "I'm collecting gas receipts, not trophies" even though the '69 would pretty much be considered a "survivor" and the '73 was down-to-the-unibody restored by one of our three (that I know of) local AMX experts. For some reason, my area (York County, PA) and the general surrounding area seem to be a hotbed of AMC cars with no less than 20 '68-70 AMX's that I know of (not including mine) and another 73 Javelin that I am aware of, Ramblers, Gremlins and other AMC's (not to mention AMC Jeeps, which I also own one of - '77 CJ5 304 3-speed patiently waiting for my time to rebuild it). 69auto290 in TheAMCForum would be me. I enjoyed this video, thank you for producing it!

I still can't believe that James Brolin (if I remember this right) and like 5 other people raced the 1979 Spirit AMX at the Nurburgring 24hr race and won in their class( im like 99% surw). Even after having like no brakes, busted suspension, etc. And they were the first American team to race the 24hr race. Ford of Europe doesnt count, cause they were using European escorts and such, not a mustang or something sold in America. They have a video here on KZfaq about it. It's a pretty good watch 👍 Forgot to mention, they were taught to drive the nurburgring by a One-armed former tank driver from WW2 in his BMW. Seeing that guy drive the ring in that video was mesmerizing.

Well produced and accurate information. I much preferred the 68-70 AMX to the Javelin AMX. The Pierre Cardin edition was just tacky. Corduroy seats? Who thought that was a good idea? Oh well, it was the 70s, the decade that taste forgot. Thanks for producing such an interesting and well researched video.

@@IfThisCarCouldTalk I lived through the 70s, so I include myself in that description. I even had a crushed velvet jacket lol. I would love to be able to own an AMX, but there are very few left and even if you could find one, parts would be next to impossible to find here in Canada. AMC actually built some of them at it's Canadian branch plant in Brantford Ont. BTW, Just subbed your excellent channel.

Very well done. I have long been of the opinion that the Javelin name should have continued in 1975 as a upgrade, with appropriate cosmetic identification, on the Hornet Hatchback - the Mustang II after all was based on a Pinto. There came a time when AMC needed strong marque names for their products but they dumped Ambassador, Javelin and AMX, in which they had much invested, for 1975. Little wonder that buyers often didn't know just what AMC was nor how good their products were.

Definitely 2 cars I kick myself, for not scooping up, in the early 80's. My 1969 Nova SS350 was cool, but not Trans Am Sports Car cool, like these AMC offerings. Rust was a big problem, with any vehicle in Cleveland, back then. And even a 10 year old example would be full of at least some holes.

AMC always had cool and innovative products in some respects, but simultaneously plagued with awful quality and workmanship along with poor engineering. Specifically, the Pacer had a very small footprint and very large and roomy interiors on the positive side. However, the quality was atrocious and the poor engineering was manifest with awful gas mileage on par with much larger vehicles, let alone the extremely poor handling. The Gremlin was also a brilliant idea well ahead of it’s time but again, awful quality and gas mileage on par with a large pickup truck.

@@IfThisCarCouldTalk Difficult to say if AMC would’ve survived had it avoided engineering & quality problems, mainly because much of these problems were rooted in an overwhelming corrupt auto union which pushed back against many quality reforms and went on strike costing the company millions. In fact, most - not all - of the quality problems of US cars were rooted in union corruption back then as they balked at bad workers ever getting fired and the required dedication to quality, along with a complete lack of workmanship pride. Things today have certainly changed for the better, but at the cost of foreign manufacturers taking over the US market unfortunately. So, if AMC hadn’t been plagued by engineering/quality problems, they would’ve had to dramatically increase prices, and who knows if that would’ve gone over too well. In short, if they’d been able to avoid these problems from the beginning, I’m sure they would’ve been absorbed by a larger foreign company with their govt’s financial backing.
