Saint Cyprian was a famous church figure and martyr of the early Christian period. He was born in the III century in Carthage, in the province of Africa (now Tunisia). Cyprian was originally a pagan and a famous rhetorician, but after converting to Christianity he quickly became a famous priest and bishop.
Cyprian was elected bishop of Carthage in 248. He actively preached and defended the Christian faith against pagans and heretics. His pastoral ministry was filled with charity and concern for the poor and needy.
In 258, under Emperor Valerian, an imperial campaign against Christians began. Cyprian was arrested and severely tortured. He refused to renounce his faith and was sentenced to death. Saint Cyprian was beheaded by martyrdom on September 14, 258.
His martyrdom and his wisdom in the teachings of the church earned him the reverence and respect of the faithful. Saint Cyprian is considered one of the great fathers of the church and an intercessor before God for believers. His memory is celebrated on September 16.
