There are a number of ways to look at this question. If I take the purist approach, and interpret it as, "which one watch would you like to own (excluding price considerations), if you could own no other", I would say a Patek 5140G in white gold (perpetual calendar). If you interpret it as, "which one watch would you own and pay for out of your own pocket if you could only ever own one watch", I would say a Rolex GMT Master II in white gold.

Explorer I is best. Dressier than the Submariner and rugged enough for most uses.

If you want to stay with rolex then probably the best all round choice is an Explorer 39. APRIL RO 15400 Breguet Marine or Nautilus 5711 white dial (all on bracelet) are all fantastic as a solo watch.

There are watches I like more than a Sub and they are either cheaper or in the same price range so if money was an issue that would limit me to only one watch: - Omega Seamaster 300 Professional with sword hands (Ref 2254) is the most beautiful SMP and costs only around 2000$ - Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. Not the most exciting looking watch in my opinion but a true classic and every watch collector will look at you favorably if you tell him you had to pick one good watch and decided for a moonwatch. - Omega Speedmaster Ref. 3594 Broad Arrow. Actually exactly the same as the Moonwatch different hands, steel bezel and the dial has a slightly lighter color. Technically the same, but look much cooler on a leather band. - Rolex Explorer 2 (in white if 5 digit ref or black if 6 digit ref they look best in my opinion). The same build quality as a sub, the same (or a similar movement then a GMT Master), but not as obvious and well known. Run around with a Sub or GMT Master and everyone will recognize it (and consider it to be a fake). The Explorer 2 is a Rolex in disguise. If I had to choose only one watch out of the big world, these watches would be high on my list. Followed quite closely by the IWC Ingenieur (several interesting models). I think, if it was only one, it would be either the Omega SMP2254 or the Explorer 2 due to their watertightness. But then there are other watches.... AP I consider to be ugly no matter which one you take. And I do not like PP either. My next bigger purchase will either be a mechanical Grand Seiko SBGH001or a Constantin Cacheron Overseas. But I am not limited to only one nice watch :)

Speedy or the sub. Only way to chose is to flip a coin. Both can be warn daily in any situation. The Rolex says more I'm a little uppity and the speedy says you better know what you are looking at, but let's be real 3k plus on a watch is a little snobby. My next addition will be a MOTM unless the right sub comes my way.

it would have to be the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5990. Sporty, Uber-complicated and it's a formal Patek while fulfilling the function of a diver or chronograph at the same time. Also, it's stainless steel; even though I love gold, if I could only have one watch, carrying a gold one around with me everywhere I go would be an absolute bitch. If I could have one more I'd get a basic AP Royal Oak but in Rose gold and with a blue dial. That would be my fancy dress watch. :)

The nodate Sub 14060 with just two lines of dial imprint is an understated and slim watch which I would prefer any day over the newer versions which are way too bulky. In my opinion it's one of the best Subs of all time. Bigger is not better. Same goes for the Porsche 911. These classics are slowly losing their essence and become uglier. However, the Sub is an epitomy of a society of generic robot people losing their individuality. Why go for a watch which can be seen on the wrist of every third fucka on the street? Does Archiebald really want to be one of them or can he evolve and become a super fucka instead of a prat? Also Rolex is way overpriced.
