Love these katas of open hand against a Katana. As an Aikodoka, many of the movements, grabs, locks, and disarms are familiar but executed a bit differently. Thank you for bringing us both Parts 1 and 2 of this very cool set of katas.

I studied Aikido a long time ago. This makes the moves in aikido make a lot more sense. It puts Aikido itself into better perspective, not as an unarmed martial art, but as a “higher level” of armed martial arts. It makes more sense that O-Sensei originally only wanted to teach advanced martial artists.

The techniques probably must be taken in context. I see them making sense in armour, or as training for "desperate measures". The chances of getting into grapling distance vs an armed opponent(wihtout beeing armed yourself)...are rather slim even for a very skilled fighter

Shogo, The videos are getting better and more interesting. I did learn something from this kata today! I was very surprised that a katana can be taken from an attacker. I don't think I would try it, but I would love to train with this technique. Can Sensei show a kata on how to take a knife from an attacker in the near future? There are so many people being stabbed and killed in the US right now; its awful, but I would like to see the technique. Thank you Seki Sensei and instructor Shogo!! 🙂

In addition to the spear kata, it's also easier to throw the attacker off-balance due to their lower hand forced to go lower than what is allowed by their arm normally, forcing the knees to bend and pressuring it with balance of the body. By pushing the upper half of the spear down, you apply heavy force to the upper body backwards, which stumbles the attacker because their center of gravity, and their center of balance due to it, is leaned forward causing them to be weak to pushes at the upper body, and specifically pushes starting from about the head. The katas here really make use of the understanding of one's center of gravity and the limitations of joint rotation to be effective. Sure, these are fixed training, but in a real battle, this comes in handy since there's no fixed movement in a fight.

definitely interesting, but if you spin dodge. a natural reaction would probably be pull back or circle instead of standing still. i can see it possible to grab a spear even if they pull it back, though not easy for sure. seems easier to go for the head while spinning than to try to grab a katana or spear at the right angle. but i dont really train katana or yari fighting and disarming. Just comparing different styles, and wondering how someone would react realistically in most martial arts demonstrations.

You're misunderstanding what Kata is for, it's not meant to be used exactly how you see it. Kata are to get you used to different motions and aspects of the Martial Art you're learning, then apply that into different situations not necessarily the Katana itself. It's an accumulation of knowledge and experience and situations that determine how each is used. You might use 4 different parts from 4 different Kata into one thing as it would apply to that situation at hand.

Something I'd like to see in this channel is Shogo attacking Seki-sensei as if he were actually trying to kill him, after the first demonstration, just to see how reliable some of these techniques are. I just see Shogo stopping after the attack to let Seki-sensei disarm him without any effort at all, and I keep questioning the video for that

Yeah. This channel is entertaining but I really wish they'd show the techniques with a resisting opponent... The biomechanics are legit though, if you get the timing right and manage to get hold, you're surely taking the weapon from the opponent. Now, dodging the spear while spinning looked a bit goofy, perhaps there is a better way instead of turning your back to your enemy?

I don't practice kenjutsu, but I practice HEMA and train with a lot of different swords and a lot of pressure testing, so I may be able to help answer your questions. Regarding the first question, the swordsman has made a strike from a draw cut with one hand. His sword, which is a curved 2 handed sword, is not in a strong position with good body structure for a thrust. He could try to stab the blade forward, but he is out of alignment with his body and relying almost entirely on his arm while at nearly maximum extension. His thrust would be inaccurate and not have great range to begin with because of his foot position. For most swordsmen, the next step after failing to make such an attack is to regain control of their weapon as quickly as possible, giving the unarmed defender a brief moment to execute their counter. At this point it would be a matter of who is faster to respond, as the moment the swordsman is able to regain control of their weapon they can execute another, more dangerous strike. Regarding the second scenario, the swordsman could indeed simply turn their blade to the outside and strike out at their opponent, assuming they are not caught off guard by their opponent not simply falling dead or running away. This would certainly result in a cut, but the degree of injury resulting from an attack from this position would not be particularly dangerous as the swordsman is very close to their target and they are extended out quite far because of the nature of their attack. It is important to remember that when swords are drawn, the situation is now life and death, and you must be 100% committed to your attack. Anything less can result in you landing a negligible strike to your opponent, which allows them a chance to kill you with their return strike. I am generalizing of course, but Kenjutsu styles tend to favor killing cuts over disabling or wounding cuts, which requires the swordsman to initiate an attack from a strong position first so as to maintain edge alignment and proper momentum to cleave into their target. This becomes apparent very quickly when you start to practice cutting on tatami. You need to start the cut from a strong position and have enough momentum to follow through with the cut, otherwise you will not cut it completely. Anyway, I hope my reply helps to shed some light on the situation. This is just my opinion, but it is based on my experience with a wide variety of swords, with a little bit of knowledge of katana. I am open to friendly discussion if you like 👍
@skybirdnomad
@skybirdnomad Жыл бұрын
@@jonathanbartlett1098 Thank you for your response. Regarding the first question and your answere about the foot positioning, as soon as the attacker notices the defender begining to lean back, could the attacker then bring their back foot forward to give better footing for a thrust?
@skybirdnomad
@skybirdnomad Жыл бұрын
@@jonathanbartlett1098 Ok I see what you're saying now. In a real life situation the sword strike would be really fast. The attacker could put most of their weight on the front foot during this to enable anticipation, but that goes against what you describe as Kenjutsu philosophy of striking fast and putting everything into it. So the idea is not so much to anticipate an opponent's counter, but to get in a hard strike before the opponent can do so? I.e. a samurai warrior doesn't specifically train so much to suddenly shift direction midway through an attack?
@jonathanbartlett1098
@jonathanbartlett1098 Жыл бұрын
@@skybirdnomad This is generally my understanding, yes. However, I will add the caveat that I have not trained in Kenjutsu to the same extent I have studied other sword systems, and there is also the fact that once a swordsman reaches a certain level of skill, they can basically make up whatever rules they deem fit in a swordfight. A big part of what makes the defender's actions successful in this scenario their timing. The Italian systems I am familiar with refer to it as tempo, which is a very similar concept to musical tempo. If you have ever played music with others, such as in a band, then you will understand immediately how someone playing out of tempo with everyone else will screw up the carefully laid plans of the band. Swordfighting follows the same concept, except you are trying to screw up your opponent's rhythm so you can take advantage of their momentary vulnerability. Each action requires a minimum amount of commitment and follow-through, so catching your opponent with an "off-beat" action will screw them up pretty badly
@skybirdnomad
@skybirdnomad Жыл бұрын
@@jonathanbartlett1098 The tempo aspect you talk about is pretty deep, and sounds like something I would enjoy learning. Someone I know once told me that timing is more important than speed and accuracy In general how are European systems in terms of defending one self in a surprise attack? I.e. drawing the weapon quickly and maneuvering to respond effectively I do know that one of the main focuses of Japanese katana styles is the quick draw
