My mom just passed last November and my Dad passed when I was sixteen... I swore off Motown and similar musicians, except Otis Redding cuz he's my soulmate musically... anyway, I just had a fight with my partner and I found myself typing out "if you don't know me by now, you will never ever know me" been together 8 years. And I listened to this again, tho I know it so well and it just made me think of my parents too. I'm 38 with almost a year of sobriety and my parents died from their addictions and left me with nothing. No guidance, no support... I have children I fight for every day. They never fought for me the way I do for my kids... My point here tho is that my parents had me grow up on oldies and Motown, especially my Father. I understood them through songs like this more than I ever understood them otherwise. I hope this song reaches through time for other people as well.

I am 64 years old and I have something to say about the song in my life as of late. I know who I am I've always known who I was. People have always tried to control me and take my light somebody even tried to kill me for it. Can't take someone else's light you can however have your own. God sees everything he's been watching you know who you are and he knows who you are and I have a pretty good idea of who you are just saying you better leave this child of God Alone you've been playing with me too long it's over that's about ready to rain fire and brimstone on your head don't you get it I pray he has Mercy on all of you

If you don't know me by now You will never never never know me (oh) All the things that we've been through You should understand me like I understand you Now baby I know the difference between right and wrong I ain't gonna do nothing to upset our happy home Oh don't get so excited when I come home a little late at night 'Cause we only act like children when we argue fuss and fight If you don't know me by now (if you don't know me) You will never never never know me (you'll never, never know me) If you don't know me by now(if you don't, if you don't know me baby) You will never never never know me(No you won't) We've all got our own funny moods I've got mine, woman you've got yours too Just trust in me like I trust in you As long as we've been together it should be so easy to do Just get yourself together or we might as well say goodbye What good is a love affair when you can't see eye to eye, oh If you don't know me by now (if you don't, if you don't know me baby) You will never never never know me (hey hey, hey hey, hey hey) If you don't know me by now (you will never never never know me) You will never never never know me (oh)

At first, I thought this song was originally sang by Simply Red but after hearing this original version of "If You Don't Know Me By Now", I fell in love with this and I preferred to listen to this original version!

I can remember listening to this on the radio while riding the bus home from school. Not sure if it was 1971 or 1972, somewhere around then. I never cared much for Simply Reds version of this song. I liked other songs they did, just not their cover of this one. Sometimes only the original will do...
