Riding in a group can be an incredible experience, but it can also be intensely frustrating. In this video I talk through some of my key tips for riding in a group smoothly, efficiently and safely. My experiences come from having joined many many group motorcycle trips in multiple countries around the world, such as Big Little Rides, Novo Adventures and Tour1. I’ve also ridden in 30 different countries now so have a breadth of experience. I filmed this while on a trip with Tour1 in New Zealand [video series links below]. Let me know in the comments what your experience of yours is and if you think I’ve missed any bits of advice?

Good discussion and suggestions. Absolutely, ride your own ride and as long as you know where the group is going then you don’t have to feel pressure to always keep up. I’ll add, keep an eye out for the person behind you and don’t run into the person in front of you.

Show up with a full tank. If the group is riding to fast, move aside and let the others that know how to ride stay tight in the group. Learn hand signals.

Holding the stagger by remembering there are two lanes within the lane & avoid drifting aimlessly between them. Nothing messes with predictability & safe following distances more than lane drifters

Thank you Vanessa, you really did a great job explaining WHY it is important to do, or not do certain things. I think most riders want to do things right they are just oblivious to the importance of doing things. Like the person who always makes everyone wait because they are so slow putting on their gear, or the one who stops when entering a parking lot and makes everyone behind him stop in the traffic lane. So many little details that I think riders would see the importance of if they listen to you!

Nice one Vanessa, this all makes total sense and in most cases during the decades that I rode a bike worked very well. I can't ride anymore due to past surgery(s) and it's been over 10 years since I did. I do remember some of the later group ride outs where things could have gone better. The 'old days' the more confident riders used to start at the back of the group and progressively pass other riders safely until they got to the front. If it was a longer ride the more confident riders would pull in and join at the back. Overtaking was always to the right of the rider on the lanes with the occasional outside overtake on a large roundabout when the group was doing a 270 degree destination then slow to filter back in to the group. All good in most cases. During the latter years there was a view of no overtaking by some less confident riders regardless of riding on the straight or the lanes. That was when I stopped going on the larger group rides. Vehicles overtake other vehicles. Often I would be the tail end Charlie where cars/vans/other bikes would overtake us and I would back off to leave them room to pull back in, some others in front did not causing me some considerable concern on occasion. For a rideout set the rules that fit everyone, the drop off system used to work great where at a junction the second rider would stop and join at the back then filter forward passing tail end Charlie (often me) who would remain at the back to mop up any lost duckings. Many thanks for shearing.

Very good advice. I’ve lead group rides and participated in others on organized tours. Group think can lead to dangerous situations, just because the bike ahead of you passes or pulls out does not automatically mean it’s ok for you. I’ve seen group members blindly do what the bike ahead does, not wanting to fall behind and get themselves into trouble. As you say ride your own ride. I tell groups I lead, this is not a race, I will ride a moderate pace and only pass when’s its 100% safe. I’ve seen ride leaders do things that cause issues, slowing or turning unexpectedly to let the group catch up or for a missed turn.

@@TheGirlOnABike I've done Route 66 round trip solo, West Coast of the US (Hwy 1 and Hwy 101) solo, Nad potions of the California, Arizona BDR solo. A few of the organized day trips I've been on were safe and well planned but I prefer to listen to my own music and take things as they come. For those who enjoy group rides should keep doing it. I also know people who seem to never want to ride solo.

Hi. I would say : for the power guys please remember to give a good chance or even stop somewhere for the back riders to catch up, and it is you that poured on the power not the guy at the back not keeping up !!!! Maybe not as good rider or much smaller powered bike !! I had a Triumph 750 T140V. I was often asked why I road at the back of the team “ I rather pick the bit up ( which I have done, blood and all ) than be pick up in bits !!! ANTICIPATION of anything and everything 😊😊😊😎😎😎

Pretty much common sense really Vanessa but well worth saying. One thing worth doing is when in a group buddy up with someone and pull up side by side at filling stations and fill up both bikes and take it in turns paying. Takes half the time on a long journey👍 We always did that on trips all over Europe to WSB races and it works well.

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience! Group rides can be amazing fun if everyone is on the same page and shows respect to all in the group, regardless of their riding ability, skills or physical bike. I hope you can find a kinder group to go with and you get the epic experience of group rides one day 🤞

In every group there is usually one who thinks he's at Donnington Park. Back in the day my bike club would split into slow, medium, fast groups... at some point peeps forgot this idea. The best advice I can give for a group ride is this... meet at a petrol station.

Very good, but If you are the slowest member of a group, try to be the third or the forth in the group. The "harmonia effect" will make you have to offten speeed over your limits to catch up the group if yøu are in the tail of the group.

I avoid it like the plague, with the exception of technical off-road stuff which I always do solo but wish I had someone. Problem is will they best too fast or too slow on road, do they have the same skill level off-road, do they have the same risk appetite, and do they have strong defensive riding techniques, do they need more stops, have less range, etc. These things never match up, not to mention schedules and logistics.

Wander off and play with a bird!!!! 🤬🤬😂😂😂😂😂 Seriously though, you’re absolutely right. Riders not pulling in far enough after an overtake and failing to clear the road for the rider behind when exiting are THE most annoying mistakes for me. But they are often just that, so a quick friendly reminder before setting off is great for group harmony and enjoying that feeling that you’re on your bike and not at work. Ahhhhh 😊

Ego.... that comment encompasses so many problems in group riding. Also a very important one for me has alway been "your lane is your line". A Sunday ride is not a timed race and saving 3/10th of second to the coffee stop by using the on coming lane to hit the apex is stupid.

Been on 5-6 group rides, yes came across all the riders that do everything you mentioned in this video. I did have fun meeting the various people and their stories of life. Good advice for those that choose group riding especially first timers. In the end it was just not for me. Riding with a friend or two at the most with a planned destination is fine. Other than that, I prefer riding alone. My favorite ride so far was alone two years ago when I turned 60. 5K miles headed from the west to east and back through some 14 states here in USA. Camped, stayed in a few motels, 70% road 30% off road. Now at 62 ready to go again but much more off road this time. Iceland is on my Bucket list. :)

Not a great fan of group rides 😂 but agree with what said with a few caveats. Recommended speed through curves has nothing to do with what speed you can do it. At that speed you have 2 seconds to respond as you come around the curve. If you have older riders they will need a little more time. The faster you are going the less time you have to respond. It is not rocket science. Going fast does not mean you are experienced, skilled or whatever. New riders are concerned that they are being judged when they should be doing the judging. Is this group following best practise? If not then find one that does. And as the lady says, don’t be the dick who is late, moto not well maintained and not ready for the ride.
