In this video I'm taking a look at a BUNCH of solid state drives that are on the market and strong options for video editors who need fast, reliable, portable SSDs to get their editing work done. There's a lot of controversy around SanDisk these days due to failing drives, so I wanted to share with you what hard drive I'd buy if I were buying brand new TODAY.

Great breakdown video! My wife and I are full-time travelers and have a KZfaq channel to document our travels. I can’t afford to lose video, so I’ve been relying on the Samsung T7 drives. Most recently, the 2TB versions so I don’t have to pack more drives in my camera bag. Zero problems in over 3 years. Cheers!

I've used several OWC products since 2011. I would definitely recommend their drives. I bought a 1tb Envoy Pro for when I need to edit projects on the go and it's great. Since I mostly edit short content, it's fine, but like you mentioned - I have to be super organized dealing with only 1tb of storage. I should have gone with a 4tb so I could spend less time organizing files and more time editing.

Got the OWC Pro Fx 1TB for a MacBook Pro M1 2021, they have more then double the speed of my Samsung T7’s… it’s a joy to use it! I recommend it for sure!

For me in New Zealand the MacBook Pro 16" was already a major stretch in my budget - as it's $4000 NZD. For an extra $250NZD I bought a Samsung T7 2TB. Would have been an extra grand and a bit for a 2 or 4 TB and I was already pushing my luck going for a 16" in the first place. SSD works great for any large projects. Majority of jobs I can do with the onboard storage, and then I delete and archive it on the SSD:)

Totally understand. Cost for tech in other countries can be outrageous - especially upgrades to Apple products. I've been told the cost of Apple tech in South Africa, for example, is incredibly high. So if you're in a position where the cost to upgrade a Mac is 3x, 4x as expensive as a portable external SSD - then definitely go with the external SSD. For sure. Appreciate you sharing your experience from New Zealand!

Great info as always! I just ordered the Samsung T7 Shield 4TB during Prime Day, they went down to $199. I use that for a copy/backup drive for video files. My primaries for editing are the Sabrent 4TB Nano SSD (about 1000mb) and the OWC Envoy Pro (that thing is a tank). I also did a build-your-own with an ACASIS and an internal 4TB drive. It's blazing fast but gets so hot (even with the thermal pad thingy), I'm kinda leary about using it for long editing sessions. Really bummed about the whole Sandisk debacle. Purchased 4, returned 4. Drives me nuts that all the online retailers pushed the fire sale discounts on those drives. Whenever you view recent comments about them, they all mention the drive failure issues. I know there's a firmware fix for um, but can't/won't trust any of their drives for a while.

Yeah, the heat dissipation on those build-your-own options can get a little iffy. Especially if you try to put an 8TB situation in one of those enclosures. And yeah, I won't be trusting those SanDisk drives - I'll take a T7 Shield over those any day.

Right before the SanDisk Extreme Pro debacle began, I ordered one on Amazon. Failed. Returned it and ordered a replacement thinking faulty unit. That failed. Returned it. Went with the OWC Envoy Pro FX, and it's fantastic. It's thunderbolt connection is fast, and doesn't heat up like the SanDisk Extreme Pro (my older version still works fine), or the Samsung T7 I also use. Great video. Thanks.

I was this guy trying custom ssds with enclosures, with all that problems you mentioned, mostly not reaching that top speeds… until this year I bought the 4tb internal option on my m2max. There was no better choice I had made for my setup which feels so painful when buying it, so pointless when receiving the computer and so rewarding when in the midst of editing 1-2 smaller projects at a time or a 40 min show and still have 1TB available and just don’t worry about storage basically. I guess the reselling is not as good too, but really the peace of mind and practicality is unbeatable. And everything what makes you feel better at work makes you work better. So worth it for sure! For the external I actually was apparently lucky and almost only have the sandisks without failures (the 1gbit ones)…fingers crossed.

I couldn't agree more! It's definitely painful to invest even what amounts to a few hundred dollars more than just buying a 4TB external SSD, but you can't beat how well Apple's internal SSDs work with the Mac. Blazing fast and very reliable. I love not having to connect a portable SSD for editing. Glad you're glad you splurged on the 4TB internal!

I read somewhere that it's just been a bad "batch" of those Sandisk Extreme Pro Mobile drives. I bought one a year or so ago (4TB Pro model) and have been editing off of it just fine... amazing drive. Still, my next drive will likely be a TB3 drive made of an m.2 and enclosure... since the Sandisk Pro model drives, even with the USB 2x2, aren't utilizing their maximum bandwidth without TB3.

Excellent point. Just be sure to do your research on the enclosure/bare drive combo - I know a lot of people who run into constant issues with overheating and mounting problems. I'm sure there are some solid options out there so hopefully some of your communities know what's up.

I use an OWC RAID enclosure with two Seagate IronWolf drives. This serves as my main back-up of all footage I have loose on my other drives. Couldn't afford more than a 500GB Samsung T7 years ago when my WD HDD was clunking out while I used it for editing. 😰 Safe to say I was dancing on the razor's edge with that spinning drive. The T7 works really well, but the capacity is making me hit a brick wall on my current short film project. Hoping to upgrade sometime to a T7 Shield 2 or 4 TB.

Great video and well-timed! Looking for an SSD currently and was considering the SanDisk… yikes! I tried an OWC drive a while back, but my computer didn’t even recognize it and even after troubleshooting with their tech support, I wound up having to return it. Kind of put a bad taste in my mouth, but it’s probably not a common user experience (just a common me experience 😅) I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on the Tropic Color SSD that recently came out though! The specs on that look pretty insane!

Whoa! Tropic Colour released an SSD? Just checked it out and at first glance it looks pretty cool. And they're claiming it's the world's fastest SSD? Only downside I can think of is it's limited to 2TB. Certainly useable but would prefer 4TB. Their video about "how we did it" is pretty interesting. Worth watching that vid on their website.

I’ve had good experience with Samsung T5 and T7. I’ve used plenty of them over the years, and no issues with any of them. Speed is not the absolute best, but plenty enough for my use.

Exactly! 2800MB/s is nice but not always absolutely necessary (if you can even achieve those speeds throughout the entire data transfer). 1050MB/s is plenty fast for real time playback of 4K video files.

Another great Looking video, good advice and well explained , I’ll look at the the Samsung. Currently using SanDisk 1T and 500Mb and LaCie 4 TB as in your video all good so far. A great Buffalo MiniStation I’ve had for the past 10 years just died , seems it’s the year of dying drives !

Such a great update Matthew, I own only a Thunderbolt Dock4 by OWC so I wouldn't know about their drives. I've been using a T3 Samsung for years and it's still going strong. Out of your suggestions I'd defo go with the T7 or... another Sabrent. I'm currently using a 1TB Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q that has Thunderbolt 3 transfer speeds up to 2,700 MB/s, USB mode speeds up to 900 MB/s and it's connected directly to my M1 Mac mini 2020 with 512GB SSD. The Sabrent is used for storing the documentation, some video stuff that I either edit from that drive or bring in onto the internal. I'm keeping both drives at some 50% capacity and the rest of my data is on two slow WD 10TB drives that are mirrored through Chrono Sync. Kudos to Sabrent!

If you want sheer speed and durability, you can't go wrong with the OWC Envoy Pro FX. For speed and portability, the OWC Envoy Pro Elektron. The only down side is the max capacity of that one is 2 TB (if that's a down side). I love and use them both.

I use a SanDisk Extreme Pro and it's been fine handeling 1440p gaming footage at 60fps for a while, but these days it randomly disconnects from my mac WHILE i'm editing. Thankfully final cut is good at autio saving, but still super frustrating. I'm on an M1 Mackbook Pro and really need an SSD that's reliable and with good write speeds

I'm still using my 2 TB Sandisk and so far no issues 🤞🤞I had heard issues with the 4 TB so I didn't go that route I actually bought 2-2 TB(new colors) that were released recently. Hopefully no issues later on down road but if so thank you for the suggestions on other brands. Especially the Glyph. 👍

I pretty much have all of those drives you mentioned. No issues outside of dropping a seagate drive. Had a toshiba in the pegasus go back but it was 6 years old. I have two of the 4tb Sandisk drives, but they are all the previous releases. of course everything is double and triple backed up on the two R8s. Almost bought another R8, but I think I'm just overdoing it at this point.😅

Yeah, definitely seems to be a bad batch of drives or maybe they went with a new provider of the actual drive components - who knows. A lot of folks using older versions with no problem. Keep all that stuff backed up, buddy (like you are)!

Pro editors use RAID arrays for editing. Single drives are for backup or transport but are just too damn slow to edit with. My first 8GB RAID cost me $3000!, with my editing suite in total was $30k. And that was entry level. Whatever we're buying now is an amazing deal from that perspective.

Glyph goes on sale cheap a few times a year, I got the 4 tb for $500 a few months back, same price I paid for the 2 tb a few months before that. they also do pay over time, I have a few, thats all I use for edits then I dump to g drives. They are fast as BALLS!

I would still consider something like the OWC Envoy Express with a samsung 980pro in it. The quality of the interface and especially power management is very important and so far I have had good experience with OWC stuff. Even out of the SLC cache, a 980pro will still sustain faster speeed than the T7.

That would be an amazing stream and actually not a lot of useful content of that type out there. Personally I definitely feel like too many creators and small businesses end up in the "pile of hard drives and SSDs" situation because they are not planning and looking forward, and it just sad and does not make much sense.

Whoa! Thank you for commenting on this. I shoot long-form, 2-3 camera video events. I just bought a Samsung 990pro 4TB pcie (because of black Friday sale) to replace the internal 2TB I have installed in my laptop. My idea was to have this small-form external drive with the 2TB drive in it, but I didn't know the reliability and speed sufficiency for these kinds of drives. Also, can you efficiently edit multiple camera streams simultaneously with footage on the same SSD drives, or should you split the footage among two or three drives?

@@DaveTheVideoMan Pure mathematically speaking, the OWC Envoy Express, which advertice for "up to 1553MB/s for real-world performance", which is about 1553*8= 12424mbps. the highest bitrate the Sony a7siii can record, for example, is 600mbps, so 12424/600=20.7, which means you should be able to playback around 20 high bitrate videos at the same time without problem from one SSD. If you are like me who records at around 100mbps for most of my work, that would be around 120 streams because reaching the max speed of the SSD. Point is, most likely, the SSD speed should not be a problem. Just do the maths yourself base on your own editing workflow and see where the bottleneck might be!

Build your own. Get a decent NVME drive. You can get a 4TB M.2 DRAM-less for $250, or $300-ish for a drive with DRAM. Then buy a USB to M.2 adapter, or a TB to M.2 adapter if you want faster transfers.

If you want high end SSDs, you can also buy U.2 drives from Kioxia and whatever adapter you want. Expensive, but you're getting the best of the best in terms of SSD.

I mention in the video how this has been problematic in the experience of my colleagues. Overheating, mounting/dismounting constantly - I know there are some combos out there that work, but if the price ends up being even remotely comparable to something like a T7 Shield or a Glyph drive, I'm going to go with the thing that has a warranty, data recovery, etc.

T7 Shield is a solid choice and definitely one I'd consider. I really want to try the Crucial XD SSD because I hear it's blazing fast and not terribly expensive.

Very thorough and informative, as usual, Mathew - thanks. It seems most of your comments are geared toward SSD's as part of ongoing workflow. I'm looking to simply archive my ever-growing video assets and just purchased four Samsung T7's - pleased to learn I made the right decision! What are you and others in the field using for long term archival storage of client files? Going through some archived files I wondered if and when filmmakers should consider deleting archived material that's unlikely to ever see the light of day. Thanks...

The high end shops use LTO tape. I use bare Seagate internal drives and then back up to Seagate externals drives - large capacity ones that are 8 - 16TB each. I showed a stack of them during the video - two stacks, actually. Haha. Because I charge every client for the cost of archiving I'm not really worried about the cost or long-term storage so I just plan to keep everything. I can't tell you how many times - years later - a client or someone who's currently shooting for the client contacts me about the archives. And then it's $$$ to get that footage.

Follow-up question, Matthew, if I may: how did you arrive at a storage fee and can you share your rate? I've been looking into this and one shooter notes: "Charging them for the storage when they return? That’s like fining them for being loyal. You saving their bacon by having the backups is part of the “Added Value” in your Value Proposition, the advantage they get for sticking with you for all their business." He charges only when the files are being transferred for possible use by another filmmaker/editor. Thoughts? @@matthewTobrien

I don’t itemize the prices I come up with in my proposals so the client never sees a storage fee or any other fees. They see the price for helping them solve a problem and achieve their business goals. But part of calculating the cost of designing and producing videos for clients (the cost being only a portion of the overall price) is figuring out what tools you need to use to store all the media that will be created. Plus, why are we presenting our clients with a breakdown of fees? They need to see three options for helping them do what they need done. Each option has a different price. There are no line items of lighting rental or editing time, etc. You’re just opening yourself up to being perceived of as a commodity, an order taker who can’t be trusted and is required to provide an itemized list of all costs associated with a project. I don’t think so. A client tells me I need to provide that? It’s an easy “No” for me and I’m onto the next client who sees me as a trusted partner and collaborator and understands the value of the solution to their problem - not someone who’s looking to race to zero and hire someone they can order around.

I just bought a Samsung T7 4TB few days ago, as it was affordable 4TB external SSD for me. The other choice is Crucial X8 4TB, which I should've gotten. I just watched another review that T7 can become slow for big file transfer (going from 1000MB/s down to 400MB/s) vs Crucial X8 which I seems to stay at 800MB/s. I haven't tested it yet though.

I always forget to check on Crucial's drives. I was always happy with their RAM back in the days when you could buy 3rd party RAM for your Mac. And yes, this is a big issue with a lot of SSDs - they advertise these super fast speeds but during big file transfers speeds fall off a cliff.

First thought is that it's more complex than what it's worth. If I have to work off two SSDs to edit, I'm experiencing pain/friction. BUT...if it works for you, keeps your anxiety at bay, then do your thing!

I just picked up a T7 4TB rugged drive as the dual drive NVMe solution I had built died on me and I needed a replacement. The enclosure was a TB3 Sabrent dual NVMe board with external power. I used 2 WD Blue 2TB each NVMe, something happened to the box where the power was cut and no longer powering the unit. I tested the power supply, it was fine so the box itself died. No wonder they discontinued it. It was a great solution when it was working, got 2000 MB/s sustained, I raided 0 for JBOD so I could get the speed and the space. So I headed on over to yea ole Best Buy and purchased the Samsung T7 and never looked back, this was about 2 months ago. Formatted it APFS since SSD benefits from that file format. I was able to edit 4k just fine on that drive, managed to get my job done while on the road. Hot tip, I used a 13inch Espresso display for a 2nd screen, love that setup as I am used to multiple monitors and only having the 16inch MBP was limiting, that 2nd display was crucial!

I've been using my iPad mini and now iPad Pro with Sidecar to extend Final Cut Pro to a second display, but I bet it's great having all of macOS and your other apps extendable to that 2nd display. Did you end up getting the T7 Shield or the T7?

@@matthewTobrien I got the T7 Shield, the very one you are considering. I used the AJA test app set to 4k using a 4GB file size and got 759 MB/sec write and 684 MB/sec read using a Thunderbolt 3 cable. I got better numbers using a 1gig file at 913 MB/sec and 700 MB/sec, what you stress it with matters. I found the unit to be up to the task although I have only had it for a few months and I needed it for that one trip so the test is based off of one weeks worth of daily use. That Espresso display is great, the other feature that I could have gotten is touch sensitivity, so a pseudo iPad extension for the MBP, since I am pretty old school (I'm 50 years old 😳) when it comes to displays and interfaces, I opted for the non touch version. I wished I had gotten the touch, that might have been pretty handy and fun to interact with FCP via a touch screen! However, I have a travel size Wacom art pad for that I have used religiously since 1998 (when Intuos was released!) The main feature being not having to lift up the mouse to move it since you have 2 sometimes 3 screens of real estate. I've been an FCP editor since 2015 and I am still learning! I started out on Avid News Cutter in 1997 then Composer in 1998 for KPIX in SF, and more recently, worked in Premiere Pro at my last tv gig for 4 years where I shot, produced and edited my own stories so my NLE history is long and varied. Anyhoo, love your channel and the vital information you express on your FCP journey with Mac, it has been most helpful and I enjoy being on the ride right along with you. 😉

@@matthewTobrien So good news, even though I forgot to register my Sabrent box in the 90 day window, they are making the exception and are going to replace my unit! I got really lucky and I have to hand it to Sabrent, good customer service. Also, they did NOT discontinue that product, so I am hopeful once again that it will be a part of my travel system. I think I will use it as my main again, and then use the Samsung as a backup unit which means I need to CC both drives when I travel, but having a backup is crucial!

I use Samsung T7 drives: 1, 2 and 4 TB. All work fine until now, BUT.....I always make triple backups. 1 x to SSD and 2x to HDD's before I ever erase one external drive. We have the same workflow and drives :-)

My 1 and 2 TB are the older models without the shield. They don't need that. I use them for a Lightroom and Photos library. The 4 TB is the shielded version. Works fast and smooth. No lost data until now. @@matthewTobrien

Even the most experienced editor with your space saving. There are problems if your filming entire days, 50 projects per day, which is common for most editors willl need 24T minimum. So until they make SSD with massive T of storage. Hopefully those days will come sooner

That is an extreme outlier and if you're making that much footage you shouldn't even be considering portable storage options. That workflow requires storage that's in a single location - most likely server-based storage with a crazy back-up system.

You probably know by now that Samsung have released the T9, with claimed transfer rates of 2000MBps for the 4TB version. On a side note, I've read a review comparing the 4TB Samsung T7 Shield with the 4TB Crucial X9 Pro, and the Crucial just came out on top with regard to transfer speeds, plus it's cheaper than the T7.

Holy crap balls Matthew! I have got to be doing something wrong in my workflow 🤦🏻♂️ I have a MBP w/4tb drive. A 2tb Sandisk Xtreme and a 4tb Sandisk Xtreme. Now scared to death. But the glaring issue after watching this is a 5 minute project w/32gb of raw footage is taking up 1.9 tb on my HD. No idea what I’m doing wrong. 🤷🏻♂️

@@matthewTobrien Yes sir. I found your channel right after I bought FCP, so I already follow your advice there. Does it seem normal to you that a 5 minute project take up 1.9 TB in the library? That seems crazy excessive to me. I leave files in place. I deleted the render, optimized and proxy files in the middle of the edit to see what the reduction would be. It came down from 1.9 to 1.3 TB. Still seems huge to me. What are your thoughts?

Cross posting on your Twitter as well: I still think a properly built raid array or NAS (my personal favourite is still TrueNAS) is the best long term solution. My TrueNAS server that connects through 10Gbe has all HDD, no SSD at all and I edit multicam hours long 4k60 projects directly from it.

Absolutely, but I don't really consider those drives portable, and I wanted to focus on only portable drives for this video. I tried partnering up with Synology to create content about video editing with a NAS, but their marketing team was hoping I'd produce a bunch of videos in exchange for free product. Maybe I'll reach out to TrueNAS to see what they have! If you know anyone there put in a good word! My Promise Pegasus2 R8 RAIDs are still going strong, and I use them every day... @@matthewTobrien people at ixsystems are amazing, and so are people at 45drives. Both worth looking into. The openness of the TrueNAS project beats everything Synologyhas by a long shot in my books. Use whatever hardware you want, upgrade or expand or migrate however you want. The UI has come a long way too so if you are looking for a NAS primarily for editing, seriously consider it! I am currently considering upgrading my setup to 40Gbe and it a matter of a $60 eBay networking card and upgrade the switch. Mikrotik CRS326-24S+2Q+RM comes to mind, with two 40 Gbps QSFP+ ports and twenty-four 10 Gbps SFP+ ports at $600 is an amazing deal.

I had a 2 Tb Sandisk Extreme fail on me about a year ago and it was a nightmare. By the way Sandisk do not make it easy to even replace it but eventually they sent me one. Now I would only use it for non critical data.

Just bought a SanDisk 2 TB Portable V2 SSD drive from B&H and used it for the first time yesterday. And BOOM! It disconnected. Fortunately it was only a test. And again today! The data is still there but the trust is gone. Now I have to search through my re-cycling bin to find the packaging to send it back. Grrrr.

Oh no! So the issue with yours is it just keeps disconnected in Finder. But when you reconnect you can still access your files, etc. no problem. Hmmmmm. I heard that SanDisk released a firmware update so you might consider looking into that if you're curious... Otherwise, yeah, just return it. So frustrating!

I thought the 2TB T9 to see how I like it - that’s a great deal because mine was $200. Big issue with it is that the USB GEN 3.2 2x2 is NOT compatible with macOS so you can’t get the full 2000MB/S speeds. You get about half that typically. @@matthewTobrien Yeah I use PC, and I can't even find cases with 3.2 2x2 ports on them...If I wanted the 9, I would not be able to utilize its speed for a while. I'm in the market for a new PC case, but even brand new Corsair cases, for example, have 3.2 Gen 1 still! Only found one that has Gen 2, which is still not capable of T9 requirements. I may just go T7 4TB for $200.

My old external SSD is Samsung 850 EVO 500GB in PATRIOT 2.5 GAUNTLET 4 USB 3.1 box. Next was Samsung 980 Pro 2TB in Acasis USB4 (Thunderbolt 3) box. If i should buy now I would buy Samsung 990 Pro 4TB if it awable or Seagate FireCuda 530 4TB and the same Acasis USB 4 box. Maybe Samsung T7 Shielt 4TB, but after my Samsung 980 Pro Thunerbolt 3 it's look slow...

@@matthewTobrien The main plus, it start overheat after 185 ℉ / 85 ℃. In Acasis box it not get overheat. SLC cache is ~200 GB (in 2TB), so the speed in Thunderbolt 3 ~2,6-2,8 GB/s, after cache speed drop to 1,7GB/s. Most of NVMe SSD speed drop to 1,1GB/s and less.

@@matthewTobrien A quick test on my iMac 2019 (i9, 500GB SSD) with a tool from Black Magic shows a 1.7 GB/S write and 2.5 GB/S read. A folder with 6.8 GB of data copies from this external SSD to the internal SSD in 4.5 sec, back it writes it in 6.5 seconds. Such read and write tests are indicative of course, when I ran this there was an upload to the cloud and other programs running in the background. With a reboot and without background tasks it runs faster, if there is a lot going on on the computer it probably runs slower. But is nevertheless a fast SSD, an extremely fast external SSD. I use the External SSD for my Final Cut Pro projects, as a work disk, project and files on there and that works flux and fast. The SSD gets warm to the touch. To use as storage it is too expensive, but as a work disk as an extension of the internal SSD it is great. It's faster than many built-in SSDs. The workmanship is as usual from Samsung very good, A very nice part. At room temperature above 26 degrees, the SSD becomes too warm during intensive use (eg video editing) and turns off without warning. Since I had to let de first again cool down some time before I can work again.

Editing my videos in iMovie on my computer is soooooooo sssslllloooowwww !!!! So I wanna do my editing on an external hard drive. I have a huge time machine to back up my final pieces. I just want to edit OFF THE COMPUTER because otherwise I’ll throw my MacBook out the window in a fit 😅 So if there’s anyone here who can just please tell me what I need, I’d greatly appreciate it! And slower.. most people do not need the speed that the internal has for editing. The bandwitdth of prores, even 4 is so far below almost any external m.2 drive its ridiculous. Also your pricing of a 4tb external drive is ridiculous. You can get quality 2tb m.2 for under one hundred dollars now. you can get 4 of those for 400 dollars, that is 8tb and put them in an owc m.2 4 slot enclosure for 650 dollars and have raid 5 which makes it a 6tb disc equiv. so this is not a good example

But I don't want to drag around a 4 slot enclosure for my video editing. I'd rather spend the extra money on the internal SSD so I can simplify my workflow. For me it's to about the most memory for the cheapest price - it's about the simplest, most streamlined setup. With my MacBook Pro I can go off an edit remotely using the internal SSD off of battery power for hours - so no charger, no external drive, no cables to manage... What kind of power draw would that RAID have? I'd be constantly worried about whether or not I can plug my laptop in to keep the battery from draining.

I stand by OWC wholeheartedly! I took a deep breath and invested in a Mercury Pro U.2 SSD drive with 32 TB capacity, and speeds (which I’ve confirmed are accurate) of almost 2,800 MB/S!!! And at £3000 that’s an incredible price for such a reliable, high-capacity, fast storage solution. The Mercury itself is bulky and not exactly portable (it suits my needs as I edit mainly at my desk) but they have a similar product with identical specs called the Thunderblade which is super portable, completely quiet (boasts an impressive heat-sink) and I would’ve gone for that if it wasn’t for the fact the Mercury is user-upgradable and easier to repair. Both devices come with software to configure them in any RAID configuration, which is just fantastic.

My spinning disk LaCies never last terribly long but swapping in an SSD in the older Rugged drive enclosures is a great option if you can use Thunderbolt 1.

I’m amazed when viewers say something like this - I had to listen to this dozens of times while editing and it sounds perfectly normal to me. Still, there have been a few comments about this lately even though I’m using the same effects on my voice that I always have… 🤷♂️

Actually you should not edit off a non protected Raid drive, either external or internal. Editing shold be done off a Raid 1 or 5 External drive with cooling. Using your internal drive in your Mac will make the boot drive fail earlier and will run hotter and will lead to earlier failure of your computer than would be otherwise.

I 100% disagree -I think that's outdated thinking when it comes to editing off the boot drive and making it fail sooner. I've edited off the internal drive on my Mac for 2 years now with ZERO issues in that department. Also, I agree about editing high stakes projects for clients, film, tv off of a RAID. But in those instances I'm not doing it on a laptop remotely. I'm doing it in my edit bay on a desktop Mac. When it comes to the editors who are making YT videos, social media content, online courses, etc. dragging around an SSD RAID enclosure is overkill. As long as you've backed up your footage to a 2nd location and a 3rd in the cloud, I think you can safely edit from an internal SSD only when you're remote.

Using high quality SSD will last a looooong time, typically has 600TBW or greater, and at least 3 year warranty. You'll be old and gray before your SSD will wear out. It reminds me of my self when I was a teen, being young and stupid, I was afraid to use the brake too often while driving my new car, because I'd fear it would wear out too soon.

this is kinda terrible advice. the answer is to "cobble together" a zimaboard with multiple m.2 ssd-s that does parity and verifies data stored and read. the entire external ssd data loss thing is an absolute amateur thing to do when there are easily attainable much better alternatives. the drives are dirt cheap, under 4 cents per gigabyte, but it doesn't matter how good or bad they might be as we aren't trusting them to reliably report an error, the entire thing is more roboust than that.

ah, thanks, but you know@@matthewTobrien i'm not sure. maybe what we need is a mini pc with a redundant array of 4-6 drives doing software raid, and the moving of videos simply placed in autostart or udev (windows or linux). that way we don't need a copy button like on a network attached storage. the pc starts up, grabs everything from the camera, and shuts down safely. i found something called the qnap nasbook too, but it's too expensive. the zimaboard only has 2 slots for nvme drives. i know you went into safe backup practices in the video here but in the portable context it's often just the matter of copying to a single external drive. we should change that somehow, because this way your data is only really safe once you go back to the office/home and start working on it. as many commenters here tell about the samsung t7 being so good. maybe it is, but it's still not a smart solution. another pet peeve of mine is people just handling sd cards all the time. i don't think it should be done, as it's the exact thing that makes hardware failure in the card the most probable due to static discharge. sure it might only happen once in a blue moon but plugging in the camera sure seems a safer way to move the footage. so what we need is a miniature synology box? i don't know. apologies for the long rambly reply. recently i've found the channel Level1Techs and he has excellent and comprehensive descriptions of how various systems still do the fundamentals wrong when it comes to circumventing data corruption. the key is, never trust any one drive. advanced file sytems like zfs and btrfs also hammer the point home
