I adopted my cat from the shelter a few months ago and he is terrified of going outside. I got a harness and leash, got him used to it indoors, and when I took him outside he turned around and clawed at the door to get in. He did this three times so I guess he will stay inside.

let him get the fresh air sometimes by opening an inside screen window will help with relaxation and feel the fresh air like he was actual outside, always is good for your loveable felines.

When I moved in my house years ago my neighbors cats used to come over and visit. I had never had a cat at that time and I enjoyed their company One day they were no longer there. I asked my neighbor, who knows a lot about cats, and she said she thinks hawks killed them. We have hawks in our woods so that makes sense. I tried to keep all 3 of my cats indoors, but two would get out at times, come back soaking wet and mad. Then the third cat who previously didn’t want to escape the house ran out. We called for her into the night with no result. 28 days later she showed up on our porch. Someone had to have feed her during that time. She was starved. We don’t know Where she was or who fed her but we are grateful. She was very small so any hawk or fox could have killed her.

Possums and skunks are more afraid of you than the other way around. I've trapped a few skunks while looking for a missing cat and they had no interest in spraying me, they somehow knew I wasn't a threat. Raccoon distemper is a big thing here. Step in their poop, it dries into dust inside the house and is super dangerous and contagious. @13bgunbunny46 I'd do the same thing. Raccoons may look cute but if cornered you will lose a few fingers or a paw.

I had a similar experience which also totally changed my feelings about cats. One thing I disagree with this video on is the need for vets, their pills and potions and particularly vaccinations. Feed your cat the right diet and ensure lots of play and exercise along with regular grooming (but never washing) and your cat should live a long, healthy and happy life.

@@daveshongkongchinachannel You are correct. There is a term in veterinary sciences "vukasine-induced tum...or..s." Two indoor cats are much happier than one. The best combination is one of each sex, but neutered. They have each other to “cat” with. Our current pair were litter siblings. They are our devoted purrsons, but also have each other to cat-play, romp, groom, and sleep with.

That may be true of cats that were part of the same litter or are of similar age and may have spent time with each other. My two cats don't get along that well. Rather, my senior cat, who was adopted from foster care, had been in the house for about 5 years and doesn't really like the five month old stray kitten to her house. Fortunately there has been no major battles but the senior cat still hisses and/or growls at the young one now and then. They have learned to keep away from each other for the most part and have their own places within the house.

In Canada,BC, for some reason, eagles are often protected. But there are so many of them. Sometimes, great numbers massing on the salmon spawning runs, like the bears do. (Remarkable there are salmon left.) They seem to have lost much of their nervousness of humans. Same as hawks and owls and coyotes. Instead of keeping to the wilderness areas, hunter birds fly about over houses. Pets are not safe from them. Pets and people have a right to be safer outside, in people living areas, but they are not, now. Wild animals have become too calm about living, hunting, around people, which is not good for them, nor us and our pets.

They NEVER go outside because I don't want them to bring fleas and ticks into my house and I don't want them to have to face any other animals outside. Here is something I don't understand. Because it may be the law where you live. The vet may be complying with the local laws. Also, cats get out sometimes. If they do, they are exposed to rabies and FIV. There is no cure for rabies. It is fatal. Some people allow their cats outside. On a side note, if the cat gets fleas, they can get tapeworms.

My cat is an indoor cat because he has FIV. He has to stay in to prevent him infecting other cats. I tried taking him outside on a harness but he hated it and scrabbled to come back inside. This is probably due to him having been rescued from being a stray (almost certainly having been kicked out of his original home). He loves his food and he was probably scared that if he was outside, he would not get regular meals. He has a happy and loving home inside and he definitely knows which side his bread is buttered.

That depends on the vet. We recently switched vets when old vet recommended life altering surgery for what she diagnosed as mega-colon. New vet changed his diet & we went from 4 pills/day to one squirt/day. That was 2+ years ago. A second cat almost died from being severely blocked up with "weight loss" kibble from old vet. There's no such thing, they'll just eat more of the weight loss. He was fat when we got him & always will be. It will take a few years off his life but he's happy. At all costs stay away from any VCA associated vet. To them you're just a number and your cat is a piece of meat. We've had 2 cats die in their care and a dog misdiagnosed with cancer. It was just a stomach cyst. We've had 6 cats with cardiomyopathy and 2 diabetics, the cost was peanuts. And yes, all cats should live to at least 17. My record is 23 and he died with all his teeth and just 1 visit to emergency.

Nonsense. If you have an "indoor cat" you don't have a cat, you have a dependant. Cats are apex predators and to keep then indoors or only allow them out in a fenced outside area is CRUEL. You are a monster. You don't want a cat, you want an emotional crutch, a being that relies on you totally for everything from food to companionship. No wonder your cat is clingy and "loves you", you left them no other option!! I hate that people have indoor only cats and keep large dogs locked up all day. Humans are the most cruel species putting our needs above the emotional and physical wellbeing of the animals we are meant to protect. Shameful

@Pax_Veritas I've deleted my comment from yesterday to start again. I didn't want to sound like the guy that knows everything, it's annoying and a complete turnoff. I can't make this any shorter, sorry. I'm 66 and have had cats and dogs since I was 16. In all that time I've lost just one cat to stupidity. An Abyssinian from a kill shelter that lived with me in a hippie house. He was a natural hunter but we lived on a very busy street, you can guess the rest. Yes cats are apex predators and you can't take a million years of evolution out of any animal just to make them soft and fluffy so this is what we did. My first 2 big Toms lived with me on a tree farm. They did just fine despite the coyotes and -40 weather and in spite of everyone's advice flew 3,000 miles with me to a new life in Toronto. Outdoor cats were impossible there; traffic, starving coyotes and raccoon distemper meant they had their own balcony, 24/7 access and screened off. What else could I do, give them away? They lived to 17 and 23. When we moved from a tiny apartment to a house and having no kids we took in cats & dogs that were either old & unwanted, abused or both. We've had six with cardiomyopathy, 2 diabetics and a blind cat. Of course they "relied on us for everything", they were beaten, starved and abused. How does that make me a monster? I think I know what you mean about dogs tied to clothes lines, big dogs kept inside 24/7 and cats that are dressed up every day to make them "cute". These animals were never our emotional crutch, we were their crutch. We're lucky enough that money doesn't figure into it so for us a 'forever home' means just that, forever! Not like all the nitwits that got a Covid dog and suddenly have no idea what to do. Maybe you just met the one guy that actually gets it. Please reply and don't just leave me hanging here. It's not an apology I'm after, I just need you to understand where I'm coming from. Thanks.

@@dicksonfranssen Hey sir, it was me who upvoted your previous reply, there was no need to delete it. I understand where you're coming from and I think we probably have a lot in common, including a love for cats I'm in Northern Ireland so the wildlife isn't quite as dangerous as Canada. There are no predators here for cats other than perhaps the odd eagle My mind doesn't register that the cats could become prey. I lost one of my cats to a truck, a tom cat. His sister lived until she was 20 and then had her own tragic ending. A family member left the back door open and an enormous huskie got in, my cat was trapped and she was killed. She lived a great life though, I still miss that cat just as much 15 years later I get your point and I lost both my cats, one to an outside incident and another inside my house where she should have been 100% safe. It was a freak incident, the dog in question had escaped I can come on a bit strong and verbose myself at times, maybe that's something else we have in common! It's hard to convey my real meaning in a short comment. I don't think you're a monster, I think you cared about your cats and did the best for them, like I did. Part of that from my perspective is letting them be cats and the risks that come with it I guess I'm annoyed at women I know who live in apartments and have never once let their cats outside. Those cats have never known what it means to be a cat. Women, eh? I know from talking to them why they got their cats and I think it's cruel to deliberately make them dependants, to restrict their nature and treat the cats like accessories to service their own needs. I do think that's cruel and selfish The situation you are describing is different, one of necessity not choice. Of course you did the right thing for your cats and I get where you're coming from We live in different environments. I am in a small country with mild weather and no dangerous wildlife. It gets cold here, sure, about -10 is as cold as it gets. It just rubs me up the wrong way to see cats held as prisoners and people with no gardens owning huge dogs like huskies and Alsatians. There was a big covid pet phase here too, so much so the supermarkets started running out of pet food. When covid ended then the shelters became full and a lot of them were destroyed. They are just accessories to many people Sometime it's necessary for humans to be the protector of animals like in your case. That's not a normal situation in my country though and I didn't consider any of the points you raised when I made my original comment Anyway, I appreciate your old-school humanity and your animals were lucky to have you first as their companion and then as their protector God bless you sir, love from Northern Ireland

@@Pax_Veritas You just made my day my friend. I hate getting confrontational with anyone and in my family it's considered a weakness. I grew up with disposable dogs and my mom's never ending supply of tea-cup poodles. Over bred dogs with ribs like paper clips. She fed them everything, I once caught her last dog choking on shrimp shells while she was glued to the TV. The poodle before that had to go because it was more attached to my dad and after he died my mom just couldn't stand the fact this poor dog had loved him more than her. As for being verbose it's often the only way to get my point across. I'm polite when it matters, holding doors open etc but if I think you're an idiot you're going to know it. I don't know how it is there (my wife is Scottish/Irish) but here animal abuse laws have no teeth and most dogs are just status symbols. We once had a Border Collie and neighbors walking their $1,000 dogs would rather cross the street than come in contact with what looked like a filthy farm dog. Hannah walked off-leash for 12 years without a single complaint from the neighbors. My extended family is even worse. After cleaning out her bank account my mother in law had to move in with us at the age of 92. She packed parachutes for Lancaster crews so she was not some frail old woman. After my brother in law died his only wish was for his dog to be taken care of. Of course that was beyond anyone's capability so we flew the dog here where he lived 4 years past his "best before" date. It was all so easy, why people moan and groan about how hard life is with 2 BMW's and a Range Rover just don't get it. That's enough for now. Very happy we came to an understanding, thanks.
