How to drum roll? I get SO many questions about how to play a good drum roll. How to make your drum roll sound smooth? How to make your drum roll sound even? How to play a drum roll faster?
So in this quick video, we talk about how to troubleshoot your own drum roll, what to look for, what to listen for, and ways that you can begin to fix it. A good drum roll takes a long time. But so do most good things in life. So be patient, isolate the problems one by one, and roll on! (Sorry, I know it's cheesy, but I just had to say that last part. The drum nerd in me wouldn't let it go.)
Leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts, questions, and insights on how to play a good drum roll!

Have always had a problem with my drum rolls, but got the Roland TD-17 KVX and it has helped me improve them so much. It has a pressure sensitive feedback that helps you even out your doubles and a metronome to help spacing. The best thing is you can play drums anytime of the day or night and no one hears you at all. Your video did a great job at pointing out the source of bad rolls. Thanks.

You might also be able to find a drum sound map with a key for rolling snare, then you just play a single note for the length of the roll. To do one making 16th notes manually without being able to bounce a stick on a real snare is really difficult to pull off on a keyboard.

my doubles are halfway buzz rolls for sure, i found i got so really nice push and pull wonky triplet sound on the closed hihat when you really press it down for 2 rebounds, still have a hard time getting my left hand as good at it though. got reasonably good at catching them after 1 rebound and being back in time, but my 2nd stroke still is way softer, i very much have a half-time skeleton outline you can hear in my fills. played with pretty skinny sticks though, i'll try some 5a today :D

Stephan, just seeing this and I thought this might be good to add to the conversation...regarding the Jim Chaffin method, I watched his video where he emphasizes the second hit of each double and after a while that helped me a little bit with this it might be worth mentioning and working into this as a backup or supplemental exercise because he was focusing on emphasizing the second hit of each double which kind of balances out the extremes if you know what I mean then you can back off and find the happy medium if that makes sense? But you made some great points here and gave me a better perspective. I was definitely guilty of emphasizing the first hit of each double and your examples are helping me with that thank you so much! The issue that I hear most with students learning doubles is unevenness of the doubles. Not a general unevenness of the wrist movement, but the double strokes specifically where the second stroke of the double is rhythmically uneven, typically coming in too soon. Learning doubles can be tough because if you slow down too much then you're just playing 2 singles with each hand (2 wrist movements), and not an actual double stroke (1 wrist movement and 2 strokes). So, it's important to find that zone where you're going as slow as you can to facilitate control and accurate execution, but fast enough to play actual doubles. From there get them to control that second/rebound stroke so that it comes in just a little later to make the second stroke rhythmically even. Hope all that makes sense. Felt this was something additional to your advice that I've experienced. Great Video. Thanks

Thanks, man, for clarify this to me. I strugle with rudiments for many years. I started to learn in age 28. So, it was late (play some instrument was a teenage dream). Because of "adulthood obligations", I keep coming and going my learning. And I always felt like if I slow down too much, I need to move my wrists 2 times instead of 1 time for 2 strokes. And I don't see people giving this advice that you gave. And too much slow doubles always felt like pointless for me because of the need to change the move of the wrists. Thanks for clarify! PS.: I'm not a native English speaker.

@@ClautonRezende You are communicating well with English. You're like many people; really interested in learning an instrument, but have little time to practice because of those "adulthood obligations" (like paying the rent). I can see how "pulsing" can be a cool *effect.* A fellow who drummed for Captain Beefheart said Beefheart wanted the snare to sound like a bunch of pebbles being shaken in a pan, or some such, kinda like a extreme version of crushing the diddles and uneven timing. *Intentional* sloppiness, if you will.

Greetings sir... I really love your stickings.. over the years I've had problems with my rudiments,precisely the single stroke roll..... I allow the rebound to happen, I don't hold the stick too tight yet I always get some sort of numbness in the wrist and it's like the more i practice the more I retrogress.. sounds funny but that's the issue..

I purchased a used Yamaha D-65 for my wife, with her money of course👌😎👍. Every time I walk thru the room, something forced me to look at it. I made the mistake of sitting down and picking up the drumsticks last week. I have beat on it until I am sick of sounding like crap. Now I'm watching Bad Drummers Anonymous Videos. I can not upgrade her to a New Yamaha D-75 until I have earned it.🖖🤪🤞 I liked, subscribed, clicked the bell, bookmarked the channel and will ask her to take lessons so we can play together. 32 years of marriage.... it can only help if we can beat on something together.

One day i went home from school half-panicking. I was in 8th grade and we needed to know how to play 32nd notes for one of the snare parts (so doubles) and i was the best percussionist, so naturally i was getting the snare part. I had no idea how to do doubles. I was messing around on my drumset to relieve stress, and i started doubling on my hihat out of nowhere. It's like a switch flipped in my head. Still the luckiest I've ever been.

Thank you. What a nice lesson - and thanks for being a "torch-bearer" of good information. I have played for years but have always had so much trouble with nice clean doubles in my left-hand when using matched grip. I started really working on that a couple of months ago and have noticed pretty dramatic improvement. I'm going to download your "30 days" guide and look forward to checking it out. Thanks again for your work!

I had a teacher place a boom stand between myself and the snare drum about chest high and told me every time I hit the snare the opposite stick should come up and hit the stand at the same time. That exercise helped me bring the sticks back up evenly which cured a big problem I was having with my dumb left hand.

Good tips. I haven't watched many of your videos so sorry if you've covered this elsewhere, but I always made my students practice double strokes on pillows so that they wouldn't develop the bad habit of relying solely on the rebound for the second stroke. This was mostly to practice clean diddles for marching, but it did seem to improve rolls.

I always had problems with this because my left hand doesn't keep up with my right. I am surprised that issue is not mentioned here. And i will clearify that i have been drumming for 45 years now... and in my late teens and early twenties i really tried to practice drum rolls and paradiddles but could never be good at this. I manage though beacause of my timing, swing and musical playing style. My style gave me at least 15 albums i have played on, touring Europe and the USA and Canada.
@StephenTaylorDrums
@StephenTaylorDrums 5 жыл бұрын
Mick Nordström yea, you’re right. Weak hand is a big issue. So big I would consider it almost separate. I’m a big proponent of isolating the heck out of the weak hand. Tie the other one behind your back and only play with that weak one until you get it somewhat caught up lol. At least that’s what it took for me. If you think about it, in a simple 4/4 rock beat, our weak hand plays 2 notes for the strong hands every 8 notes. Multiply this across practice sessions and gigs and you start to see a massive gap. It’s just a matter of the strong hand gets SO much more playing time that you have to try and even the field in your practice time. Great discussion Mick! Thanks for bringing this up my friend.

Richard Thompson Maybe it would help keeping the left on the ride/hi hat during fill-ins that replace the left part with bass drum, like paradiddle & other rudiments spreaded over toms & bass. Trains coordination, too (and your uniqueness, to date lol).

I was told to practice in front of a mirror so I did. I definitely remember crushing many diddles before I got it right as I think there becomes an urgency to speed everything up before you are ready. I think I thought by dropping the stick with bounce I could him in quicker with my left hand but it just becomes messy but if you are thinking like that it means you know there is a glitch and you are trying to think of strategies to resolve the problem. Time to worry is when you can't hear or feel it.

I can't help but feel like a lot of these problems (not just with rolls, but the various problems addressed by about 90% of the instructional drum videos out there) stem from people learning to play songs instead of learning to play the instrument. If you learn the instrument properly, the vast majority of songs out there are easy. If you start out trying to learn a bunch of songs before learning to play the instrument, you quickly run into a bunch of problems, and then you end up having to fix bad habits you never would have had in the first place if you'd just learned to play the instrument right. That said, I think you do a good job of explaining how to combat those problems. Good video!

@@Al3xAttacK Tons of people are guilty of this. Everyone says, "I don't need lessons, all the best players were self taught," which isn't true BTW. And they don't think about the fact that for every Benny Greb (who really is self taught and amazing) there's 100,000 guys who can't play their way out of a wet paper bag. I'm not accusing you of saying that, I've just heard it a lot. It pisses me off because it's extremely arrogant and displays a lack of patience and respect for the art and for those who have gone before.

@@76JStucki i agree. I think you misunderstood. I started on the instrument at a very young age doing what you said, "learning songs instead of the instrument". I figured out how to keep time and hear patterns on my own and eventually grew with practice. Then, when finding myself in that rut, unable to progress, i took a few steps back, took lessons, was taught my rudiments and technique, and it opened tons of doors. I agree that people should take the time to understand the fundamentals of intricate drumming, and not just figure out how to play ACDC tracks and call themselves a drummer

One thing I've been trying to do in attempt to improve my doubles is to practice odd groupings of notes (3,7,9, etc.) using only doubles and making them sound exactly like the same pattern played with singles. I believe you could do the same with any other sticking, but I'm yet to try that out.

@@crimsun7186 Yeah, I know rudiments are not entirely double strokes. I didn't say they were. But several of the rudiments are double stroke rolls in ascending odd-numbered strokes.
