I always get bareroot trees in the mail and they start to fruit either the same year or next year, where as my conventional nursery trees i bought in pots fed osmocote type fertilizer for 2-3 years take years and years longer to become productive and I notice them going through shock when transitioning from chemical to organic like an addict suffering withdrawal and failing to form the proper relationships they need right away.

You should plant mulberry trees they fruits on there first season there is tons of varieties and there much harder to kill then most other tries there some the sweetest fruits in cold climates can also grow to Alaska to Hawaii to Arizona to Canada. There drought, heat, cold, water, humid, shade resistant and there easily grown from cuttings. Some mulberries cam grow as big as your hand other can get as big little finger. There so many varieties there is native kinds and non native kinds. There white, red, black, purple mulberries come in so many shapes and sizes.

Local nursery that promotes or has bare root. They generally only sell varieties that are zoned for our climate.

Sorry about that. Leaving some low branches trained to touch the soil will deflect such movements away from the trunk. Yes fortunately you can rebuild the trees with shoots above the graft line. You won't notice the difference in 3 years.

Probably raccoons, opossums or flying squirrels since they are not seen in the daytime. If you don't have branches touching the soil for them to climb up you can use a 4 foot stove pipe all around the trunk. If it's slick they won't be able to climb (unless they glide in). Good luck.

No one said gardening is easy. Try using trees one zone hardier than your zone.

Probably best to keep the grapefruit in a half barrel or big pot and bring inside for the winter. It would die back from freezing temps.

Depends on the tree species. In the subtropics there are many more fruiting trees and shrubs that need some shade than in the temperate climates.

Rust on pear! Wow. Rust as with all fungal diseases is a factor of the weather, more rain produces more fungus. You can try spraying whey or dilute yogurt.

Basically you don't want the tree to set and be wet for long periods of time without drying out especially when it is humid and not very windy. You want your tree to dry out in the late afternoon so it doesn't go over night with damp leaves but morning sun also may be better because water will condense on the tree overnight and you want the morning sun to dry it off as soon as possible. Long story short you probably want morning sun in that case. But you take what you can get. Some more native varieties of trees may tolerate more shade. It's diverse fungal and microbiological communities that actually protect trees and bring them important minerals they would not otherwise be able to reach or metabolize. Apples are a native understory tree of Kazakhstan for example.

I messed up. I meant to say if you have shade then morning sun is better than afternoon sun. You want the leaves to dry quickly to reduce the incidence of disease if they are susceptible. Full sun is best.

If all you have is one species of fruit like apple, you will have problems of all kinds. Even if you have many different varieties. You need species diversity.

@@StefanSobkowiak I have Super Chief France, Red Velox, Jeromine and Scarlet Spur 2. And for pollination, i have Granny Smith and Gala. My area is north facing with elevation of 5700 feet. I use insecticides like Cartap Hydrochloride and Cholopryphos but this year 12 trees are completely dried up due to these root borers.

I’m sorry sir but I had a 4,000 tree monoculture orchard. It’s a never ending series of problems that makes suppliers very happy. Natures diversity works without suppliers, you need diversity of trees, shrubs, plants in the orchard which attracts animals who take care of borers and other insects.

Think about how much growth you see on the shoots of the plants in a month to six weeks in the spring. This is what happens with roots in the fall. If you mulch heavily around the trees during fall planting, then it will take longer for the ground to freeze under the mulch, giving an extended window for fall root growth.

If the permaculture message is ever going to reach the masses, then some compromises need to be made in the approach. The foundational proofs for the viability of the permaculture orchard have been achieved. And Stefan has been exceptionally generous in his educational content during the time period that it has taken to get this far. (I understand that the content also benefitted Stefan as well, tit for tat) Now that the foundation is fixed, the message needs to go out to the kind of people that aren't going to have the level of interest for the original kind of content from this channel. If the idea of a multi species permaculture orchard is ever going to catch on in a way that truly changes the way things are done, then it needs to reach those who aren't already on board. It needs to see capitalization and be marketed for broader and more general appeal. Give Stefan the credit he is due. The man has created a wonderful example to work off of and he laid it all out for anyone who wants to follow. And he is continuing to push the ideal out to an ever broader audience with this new (to this channel) style of content. This will only serve to improve the chances of others being able to develop successful ventures of their own. Stefan has been growing his orchard and this channel for years and years. He has earned the trust that he will proceed with the wisdom gained from everything that has come before. Go for it Stefan and Zack! We're behind you for as far as you care to take this!
