Unless Shell is the same price or cheaper than your cheapest local gas, you're overpaying for gas. You probably have an older car with carbon buildup on the injectors/spark plugs. All you need is a $5 fuel additive once in a while that will give you the same results.

@@captinbeyond Gas has a shelf life. If the gas was old, it probably would have been pumped out. The tanks might have even been cleaned before reopening. Depending on how fast the station turned over, it could potentially be "blended off" with incoming fuel deliveries that would be dosed with the proprietary Exxon additive package onsite. This would probably be fine

I ended up putting a catch can in my '93 B-series pickup because the Mazda G6 motor has issues with top end carbon build-up leading to hot deposits and pre-ignition ping. It catches a bit of oil and has kept my top end sparkly clean, but what surprised me most is how much condensation it catches. About 80% of what I dump out every couple of weeks is straight water.

Interesting you said to trust the high-side of the oil on the dipstick. I've changed my engines oil 100's of times over the years and every time I put the exact amount of oil in after a drain, the oil on the low side of the dipstick is always the correct side. The high side looks inconsistent and twice the height while the low side is perfectly solid to the top of the hash marks (or dot, or line, etc.).

You missed his point. Scotty’s point is you don’t have to worry about getting bad gas in the USA usually because if you did it would mean the whole refinery was contaminated which isn’t likely. Additives make a difference but no gas company is going to sabotage their gas. His point wasn’t that additives and gas companies are the same, it was that you’re not likely to get bad gas bc most of it comes from the same play within a specific area.

Scotty: Thanks as always and keep up the great work!! Having worked in the oil refining business for a major firm plus have known many friends in the oil industry would disagree somewhat with your take on this. You are correct as to gas quality from the major refiners. The key difference however between the majors and the "no names" is the additive package. One reason the gas from the "no names" is cheaper is this gas is often missing many of those additives. The so-called "Top Tier" gas (all major refiners such as Chevron, BP, Exxon, etc.) will give you cleaner intake valves with less deposits according to a friend with AAA when they evaluated different gasoline brands.

Speaking of being over torqued, yesterday I was trying to loosen the lug nuts on a used pickup truck that we recently bought. The lug wrench would not budge them. I put a beam style torque wrench on it to see how high of a number I could get. I stopped at 150 lbs. Now I will have to use a breaker bar with a 'cheater pipe' on it to loosen them so I can torque them to the proper spec.

A few years ago, a co-worker told me never to go to the off-brand gas stations, because they foam their gas so it seems like you are getting the volume of (liquid) gas you pump, but a lot of it is air. After you drive a while the bubbles go away and you have maybe half the volume of liquid gas that you paid for. She said she had run into this several times on long distance trips, near interstates.

I'm a Shell V-power (93 octane) fan and various stations around the Midwest have always performed well. I tuned my SVT Focus with it and filled up with 93 from another (admittedly not popular brand) station once on the other side of Chicago and was pinging like crazy to the point the knock sensor was backing off timing to save the motor. Had to detune and run through the entire tank before I could reload the custom tune...and yes I tried an octane booster was a complete waste of 5 bucks did nothing even after driving a bit to prime the fuel line. Basically if you tune a vehicle on the edge of 93 octane (or using fuel that actually measures beyond 93 since that is only the MINIMUM guaranteed rating) you risk issues if you go to shitty fuel that is even slightly less octane than what you are tuned for.

Scotty is wrong on the gas thing. Saying all the gas is the same because it come from the same place is like saying all motor oil is the same since it all starts with petroleum. In both cases it is the additives that makes one better than the other. Top tier gas is definitely better gas than gas that is not top tier.

Scotty, I've got a 2016 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE w/96k miles. I service it on time and have had no problems. I drive about 1,000 miles a month now, and am a teacher who visits students in their homes, so that may go up. Love the great gas mileage and the comfy ride (upgraded leather seats). Will need a 2WD truck in the next year, or two, to get to and develop new property in a different state. Should I sell the Fusion Hybrid now before things "go bad" on it and pay more for a used truck, or what and see if used truck prices go down? If I wait, I'll have about 25k for a truck vs the 10-14k I have now. Love your vids. Thank you.

Good question. But I assume if they're not being honest then every station be claiming their product as top tier also. Their gasoline supplier may also be ticked when they pay for only ordinary gas. What may be a greater issue is if their certification of calibration on their pumps are expired.

Top Tier additive packages have to pass extreme industry-standard testing. There is scientific data backing each pack before it goes to market. Although each company might have slightly different ingredients, they all pass testing and usually blow out the detergency (alkylate), friction modifiers and other stuff. For example, one company formulates and tests Costco, Shell and Exxon additive chemistries. It's manufactured at their plants and transported by railcar to the respective company facilities. This company also happens to make WD40

I find a difference with different brands of gasoline in In Canada. I get greater efficiency and power with Shell 91 VPower vs all the other brand we have. This was for my TSX. Even better then Sunoco/ petro Canada ultra 94. When I used Costco and other brands I would loose 50-120 km of range per tank. TSX required premium and I fed her that, after 420k still running sting on original power train and exhaust system. I do need to change the flex pipe but for now it has a nice sound. One thing I learned from this car is to replace regularly worn parts with high quality ones(ball joints, tie rods etc). My babe keeps running her name is Gurtrude

After about 6 months of use - my check engine light came on. It's a 95 Ford Escort (pre OBDII) and using a OBDI doesn't really tell you anything and I was too cheap to take it to a mechanic. So, I clean out the throttle-body (Seafoam) after-which I took it on the FWY for a bit. This helped for about 3 months and then the check engine light came on again... repeated the process with the seafoam, did the FWY thing again but this time I took it to a Chevron station further down the road and filled it up. Check engine light hasn't come back on yet and this was about a year and half ago. I guess the additives that Chevron uses (Techron) just works better in my Ford.

Wrt Subaru, the two 2.0 L FA turbos I owned ran very dirty (sooty tailpipes & sparkplugs) and built up plenty of carbon in the intake manifolds. Both had problems around 20K miles (one wore out its valve lifters (Subaru recall), the other ate its sparkplugs (fixed under warranty) and often misfired while ascending hills. The 2.4 L turbo got off to bad start in Ascent with oil dilution, but has been reworked and seems to be pretty reliable these days.
