A pot of treasure is the dream. When I was stationed in Europe in the early 90s, I bought a machine and started going detecting. Found lots of neat things- chief among them was a clay pot with hundreds of hammered silvers from the 1400s. Must have been beginners luck, because I haven’t found anything nearly that cool in the thirty years since.

The metal donut with the flat side hole is a circular saw blade washer and the same are used today. It's big so it may have come from portable mill equipment such as a table saw or radial arm saw.

Mystery find looks somewhat similar to a vintage pill case top, couldn't make out if there was some type of hinge on the side or just fit over the top of something

Nice hunt. If you want to know the date on the Buffalo nickel, place it in a small container like a jar lid or small plate with the date side up. Pour in just enough vinegar to cover the coin and sprinkle enough salt to cover it. After about an hour check for the date which most of the time will now be visible.

I set up one narrow section on my detectors that cover nickels and give it a high tone. Since doing that I find many nickels, it doesn’t take long to start recognizing them and have a high percentage of digs be nickels instead of trash.

The silver was probably in a woman's hair brush or mirror set. They would put a sterling silver over the handles, the zippo type top could be a match safe lid.

Brad, maybe Bigfoot rode a moose through the woods and found a bear in the trap. So Two choices: Bigfoot pulled the trap apart to remove the bear's foot , doctored up the wound and kept him as a pet OR between Mr. Bigfoot and the moose stomped and beat the bear to death to make some good soup for Mr. Bigfoot's family. Though I think Bigfoot might have been a vegetarian, so I'll choose the first ending. I'll have to see if I can find the old movie, 'Harry and the Hendersons' to see if the producers thought they were veggie critters. Love watching your videos Brad!

Yes they would have trapped close to their house,especially around the chicken coop. If you have wood chucks they love to burrow under buildings.

@Green Mountain Detecting my guess is the top of a sterling silver 925 would be the end of a big serving spoon or the top to a fancy lid of some sort, remember if it's squished like that they used to make the bigger pieces with some sort of wax or something as a filler so not as much silver was needed for bigger pieces thats why its squashed. Hi Brad, I sure do like your videos. The trap was missing the pan, jaws and springs and also a chain to secure it. May have been "deconstructed" because the trapper used it for parts to repair another trap. Digging iron signals is a lot of work but can be rewarding. Carrying an epi-pen might be a good idea.

Brad, please carry some kind of antihistamine with you on your journeys. It will neutralize the venom of the stings. I have known people who didn't know they were allergic to the stings to drop dead shortly after being stung. Cheap insurance to pop one or two after the event. I never go anywhere without, especially out in nature or even in the garden. Love watching you discover the past and always eagar to see a new video!

Never disappointed adventuring with Brad, aka "you" but sometimes the bar gets raised! "Black Bear, Moose, Bigfoot?" I'm dying! You found some great treasures at the expense of your own hide and some equipment so, let's call it a win. Finished up on the side of a hill in Vermont under a canopy of trees while a storm rolls up on you. I know that clean, soothing smell myself and with the smell of Georgia Pines on a warm day are two favorite smells that make you glad to be alive.

Good dig Brad. One time in 55 years of digging I found 3 Nickles in one day. A V Nickle, Buffalo and a War Nickle.

Brad, Love your content. I'm retired Military ,that leaves me plenty of detecting time. I usually work military sites and here in S.C. we have a bunch. From the revolutionary war through WW2 I have found some of the most amazing items. Let me share something my Grandpa told me which led me to 2 of my most fabulous finds. This was 10 years ago and he was 98 at the time. He said "when working old home sites, try to find the outhouse first. then find the path from the house. Here's the best part. What is the first thing everyday a man will do? He will walk that same path to take his morning piss. This allows him to check his money stash buried either side of that path and that it is undisturbed. I have found 2 mason jars jammed full if silver coin. These were 2 separate home sites , about a year apart. The second find was on property that the GIST family (Wiki) homesteaded and was eventually bought by my Mom and Dad. That stash contained much silver but also 3 revolutionary war decorations. I donated them to the S.C. state museum. Thanks, Grandpa. I do notice on your channel you don't seek any outhouse that all (homestead ,tavern, blacksmith) would have had. Try my Grandpas advice. You might be surprised. Good luck, Regards in advance, Rick.

When I was about 15 (I am now 77) I went to a cabin north of Trois Rivieres Quebec in a car with my father, my two godparents,, my cousin and a window. The window replaced a window broken by a bear. There were four beds in that cottage. I had to sleep on the flour directly below that window. There was a large moose print at the front door when we arrived. Traps like you describe make sense to me. There were no fish. peace and love

I always carry Lavender Oil (Lavender Officinalis) when landscaping (Stacy’s husband here). It neutralizes & is an anti inflammatory for bee stings, spider bites, & I’ve read snake bites too. I’m semi allergic to bees & L.oil works fantastic, taking pain away in 5 min & the swelling too. It’s better to rub on right away to prevent swelling & repeat every 5 min for 20 mins. My brother had a 1/4” deep area of flesh wasting away on his shoulder from a recluse bite but after applying lavender on it, it started healing next day. I of course gave him the bottle to continue applying. Get from a local health food store & NOT GNC as they have many fake products! TY Brad, again!

A Detectorists nightmare! If you were me, you would be in trouble. I am highly allergic and carry an EpiPen had several encounters this year already but I’m on the lookout and usually are able to avoid them. I’m glad you’re not allergic.

I was around 11 and was running with some friends and found the ground bee swarm. About a couple of dozen or so stung me! I was taken to a nearby hospital by my dad, medicine given and no problems associated with the stings!! Thank God!! They don't like their home being disturbed at all, do they!?!

FYI, The Yellow Jackets get much more aggressive the closer we get to cold weather. Aside from the mean little bastards already bad disposition.

I have a guess on the mystery silver item, I think it's likely the cover to the end of a mirror handle. They were glued on with horse glue or pine pitch which got very brittle with age. Great find!

Brad, I once found a cold cream jar just like yours in the front yard of an old home in Hamlet, NC. It was jingling when I shook it so I became very excited. Inside I found old marbles that a child had obviously buried. I saved it with the marbles and it is the only cache I ever found. Thanks for your videos they make an old detectorist's day.

Hay Brad long time fan, yea those ground dwelling bee's always seem to be aggressive. A medicinal wild plant you might want to familiarize yourself with is plantain. Not related to the banana. There are 2 types, Lance leaf and broad leaf. They are very effective at stopping pain or swelling from insect bites or stings. I was recently stung on the lip by an angry wasp and chewed up a small amount and applied it to the sting. Within minutes all pain was gone and almost no swelling. Really a miraculous plant to know about. Happy hunting.

I found my first V nickel this year, 1904, My dad used to make part of his living trapping and I think you are right about the trap. Also since you mention bigfoot I will just say that I am convinced there is a phenomena out there that is probably supernatural in origin and so be careful out there. 🤣😅Thanks for the video!

We always carried dry Baking Soda in our packs for stings & bites. It is lightweight in a baggie. Make a paste with water, dab on bite, it will immediately start pulling venom while it's drying. When it's done pulling, it will flake off. Pain gone works everytime. Plus it's natural and can be left behind when you have that many bites 😂

Finally! Every time I watch diggers in the woods I anticipate a yellow jacket nest. It's like waiting for the wrecks at NASCAR....... I know it's coming. Thanks Brad. Sorry it was you, but this has been long overdue.

Probably a good idea to take some Benadryl along with you just in case of future bee attacks. 😅

Big eastern coyotes can destroy a leg hold trap . At around 50 lbs they put a lot of force on em when caught ! I had just that problem with #2 coil springs ! Got heaver steel (#3 coil springs) problem solved !

Too bad about the bees! I had a similar experience but never got stung. I was in a forested area and had a banging signal; as I was digging I could hear a loud buzzing coming from the ground and I decided to vacate the area quickly.

Trapping around a house is common to keep critters out of the hen house or smoke house, and food cashes.

the trap you found is really a foot hold trap, they catch a animal by the pad on the foot, It lets the trapper release a unwanted animal unhurt .
