Great work lands to valuable to leave Un worked theses days. The good thing about doing some of the work now and leaving until spring is you might find a few other drainage problems throughout the winter. When there is more rain drains might boil up and you can mark them with a post or something for spring time and fix when it’s dry in the spring time.

Hi Adrian. If you can get a outlet don't be feared of going deep with your drains. The deeper you can go on ground the more likely you will catch more springs coming from the higher ground. They should be ok, that bank wasn’t actually supporting them and a lot of the larger trees had falling over the years. We left a portion of ground to keep them secure hopefully. @@IFarmWeFarm you have a good point, having one isn’t enough, I spend a fair lump of time and fuel learning how grade and slope ground, and how to dig effective drains. A good portion of my land is boggy soft and you won’t travel it from mid October to early April, I could dig drains for the rest of my days whilst up in Cavan you tend to have wet areas, not entire feilds and it probably wouldn’t make sense as an investment

Well done Adrian, nothing better than the feeling of accomplishment when reclaiming land. One thing I would bare in mind and it may affect alot of us farmers that have reclaimed land over this last 70 years, but if the EU goes ahead with this bio diversity 2030 Bill, it will be set in law that any land reclaimed this last 70 years must be rewetted back to bog. Somehow I don't think enough farmers know about this and sadly it will devestate rural Ireland, hopefully the political parties in Ireland see sense and vote against the greens and vote no to this bill for Ireland.

Fifteen metres of topsoil in Lincolnshire, you're lucky if you get a foot in London. I didn't let that stop me getting some decent Potatoes out of it this year, the tomatoes really did not like the forty degree C temperatures. And Now it's been pouring for the last three days, it seems it was but a dream. Incidentally, do you have to ask for permission to carry out those sorts of works. If you tried doing it in the South East of England you'd have half a dozen pencil necks sat on your shoulder telling you what to do, and probably an encampment of green protesters in your backyard.

I just wonder, most farmers have an urge to keep their fields neat and tidy, weed free, nice looking with leafy grass for good feeding. Maybe it's our fascination with symmetry. But I wonder do we need to get to grips with untidiness and let things go away on there own. Not saying removing an undrivable hill is the same, but clipping back bushes too much,removing briars etc maybe we need to change that. I don't know, difficult to get ones head around.
@IFarmWeFarm
@IFarmWeFarm Жыл бұрын
It’s not so much the tidiness of the land it’s more for production purposes. For me that is grass, it’s the cheapest most natural food cattle can eat so the more good quality grass we can grow the better. With the way farming is going and all the extra input costs involved we really have to make the very best of what we have. Hope that’s makes some sense, it’s a simplistic version of a complexed industry

@@IFarmWeFarm 100% agree , but you know there's a growing element that uses the climate change debate to further their own ideology of plant based will save the world I.e. they don't like animals in the food chain. Looks like you could just create a man made pond as it looks like a mighty low spot on camera. Do you not worry about landslides there? Exposing that embankment the way you did it's now open to erosion and the whole hill could shift down. The tree roots may help keep it in place for a while... I'm from central California; our ground is shifting and sliding around all the time. Hope it dries up well for you.
