On our farm, we put a stick of straw in the calf's nose. It has about the same effect as putting cold water in the ear, only a bit more intense. It saved a few calf’s lives so far.🤠

We use the jack to lift calf, change ropes onto back legs above knee, then hold jack up straight and lift up calf (short time only)helps get gunk out, also use straw in nose and water in ear.

Actually i have recently read a vet article that's says don't hang a calf over a gate in those calving situations. It says it puts too much pressure on the organs and limits air intake and the only fluid that you get out comes out of the stomach. This article said for best results you lay the calf on its belly with the back legs along it's sides and front legs stretched out front. It elevates the rear end to allow fluid out and let's the lungs expand more to allow air in . Just something I read from a vet.

Yes the latest advice is not to hang calfs upside down, diaphragm and intestines puts pressure on the lungs and leads to further stress. Also don't force alot of cold water into the ears just enough to give that shock. Too much water could lead to ear infections. Adrian your heifers look absolutely in Great healthy condition. A credit to you!! Well done

Calves are in great condition joy to watch them. If you put jack ropes above both knees on calf back legs hold jack vertical and jack calf up bit easier on the back. can massage chest then. I will try sitting them down right first like above comment...

Nice job Adrian, that calf was a hard job for a heifer. I remember visiting a College in Friesland when I was a student in the 80s, they had a rig that measured the amount of leverage that pushing down on the jack created. Pushing it down far exceeded the pull you got from cranking the handle, a real eye opener. They were so concerned by this they even made sure us visitors looked it and take on board the lesson! Really enjoying you videos.👍

Have three buckets of water handy. One tipped on head of calf really shocks them into breathing (if you fell into a freezing river you'd gasp for breath) - Dr Jan Pol swears by it. The other two for the cow to drink to fill her up after calving - Tom Pemberton does this every time! Another great vid, many thanks!

Yes I always give at least 2 buckets of Luke warm water to cows as soon as they calve, great thing to do. Yes cold bucket over the calf does work but it can delay a heifer especially to lick it afterwards. Some people add salt on the calf’s back afterwards to encourage her again

Just a few tips on calving. When you first put in your hand, pinch the calf's tongue. It will retract it if still alive. Also, when the head is out, let the tension off the calf until you see it's eyes open. If allows the calf to take a breath as the calf can't breath when you have tension on the jack. Doreen Corridan of Munster AI made this point at a calving demo in Ennis mart a few years back. Would a full calving gate with head gate be of use to you?
@IFarmWeFarm

Good save Adrian! When a newly born calf is lying on his side he can only inflate one lung ! I do sit them up like a frog 🐸 pull one back leg each side and 2 front leg turned under it's chest! It can sit up straight and inflate both lung's. Mighty job on a touch and go calf. Keep up the great video!

I normally fold there two front legs under them and prop them up against a wall. It was just easier to work on him lying flat out this time, but your dead right is does help inflate both lungs. Thanks Keith 👍

@IFarmWeFarm
@IFarmWeFarm 2 жыл бұрын
As long as you don’t do it for to long you should be ok, problem is that some calves might be too heavy for one man and with that there lifted wrongly. it’s a life or death situation and has saved numerous calves for us. Ya just have to be careful. The recovery position does work well but if there a lot of fluid it ingested you may have to adapt to the other.

We have a calf resuscitator, have it 10 plus years, keep it in a box over calving gate, it can draw fluid off lungs and another attachment blows air into calf. As for hanging up calf put ropes on back legs and stand jack against the wall and it will lift animal while minding the back
