The great thing about Igbo people is that we can switch to this central Igbo that every Igbo speaking person understands and it is not even thought by anybody. Yes, we have our local dialects but we can communicate within ourselves without problems.

It’s so refreshing to see a linguistic overview of what traditionally falls under the umbrella of “Igbo.” I think we all know that there’s been much back and forth over the status of, say, Ika or Ikwerre as dialects of Igbo or as very closely related languages in their own right. So, this deeper dive into the linguistic classificatory situation of Igbo and Igboid is quite helpful

@OKEKE DICK If you speak central igbo and you have been around your own people speak their own specific dialect from the specific town they come from, you can kind of make out what's being said. It can be complicated, but I don't think it's that hard. But regardless i'm so afraid of these dialects going extinct someone needs to record and document them all.

Have been saying this for several years that igbo is a proper mother language like latin or germanik. I've also said that igbo is not a tribe but an ethnic group with it's own different tribes. I've also said that Nigeria is a country not a nation. I've also said there's no tribalism in Nigeria rather ethnophobia.

@@bandaqueenlove9134 both you and chukwuemeka are wrong. Delta is a new coined word to segregate people from each other in Nigeria. You say Delta is multi language fair enough not disputing that. Why can't they say I igbo. First before attaching state. Urhrobo man calls himself Urhrobo First, before any state so does, yoruba man, Itsekiri, Annang ,Efik, Tiv Nupe, and so on. Non the above calls the state before their indeginous heritage.

@@awarranetworktv499: I heard that oldest people from Esan in Edo state still retain Igbo and their oldest town names are still in Igbo and they have 4 market days plus their mothers ties 2 wrappers. On other hand, Igbonke/Igbanke are purely Igbos like other Igbos in Delta and Rivers. The desperation of British and Fulaniz to divide and conquer Igbos and to desperately landlock Igbo South East is the reason they carved Igbos to all states in South South plus Benue and Kogi.

Igbo languages have variation due to natural separation from the Igbo heartland (when we first migrated to Igboland from the Niger Benue confluence) and influence from their neighbors. Western/Delta Igbos have heavy influence from the Bini Kingdom. Ikwerre has influence from the Ijo city states. Abiribia and the areas in Arochukwu take from the Ibibio people and Enugu/Ebonyi borrow from the Igala and Idoma. There were different circumstances from this diffusion of languages (Igbos in Abiriba area conquered and assimilated the Ibibios around there while Igbos in Enugu were conquered by the Igala).

But some of the Igbo I’ve picked up is similar to what people in Anambra or Rivers speak and when I put my parents’ specific villages under Egbuoma village in Google maps it explained a lot dialectically. It’s very close to Anambra state and the other part is not that far from Rivers state

I wish you all will understand where the meanings of the things they are telling you come from. The things they say differently are actually different inplications that everyone who understands Igbo Language understands but probably does not or prefers not to use in that context.

@eeke7438
@eeke7438 3 жыл бұрын
Language classification is not about feeling, it is actually a professionally and academically researched work. Ekpeye as a people may not want to be classified as Igbo but the language they speak is "Igboid" or Nuclear Igbo. This is the academically accepted classification. It doesn't matter what the community thinks or feels. However, they can choose their own separate identity as a people, which is just a matter of politics or even true origin.
