This is the Igbo Traditonal marriage of Dr. Uchechi Azuike and Amobi Umeh also known as the Igba Nkwu (Wine carrying Ceremony)- Imo State, Nigeria, December 2016.
This is the last and final rite done by the groom’s family. After the date for the official wine carrying has been set, the ceremony is done at the bride’s home and her family prepares a large feast (depending on their pockets) for the groom’s family coming and invited guests, they also hire a live band and maybe traditional dancers to make the ceremony interesting.
Usually, the bride-to-be is dressed in the traditional Igbo wedding attire which include a blouse, a double wrapper, a red coral bead necklace and a big head tie known as ‘Ichafu’ or a bead round her head.
The groom is expected to be accompanied by a larger party this time (friends included) and bring along with him the bride price list. He must present the list along with the required gifts to the Umunna before the ceremony begins.
The highlight of Igba Nkwu Nwanyi is when the bride in public points out the man she wants to marry. The bride’s father or eldest uncle (if her dad is deceased) prays traditionally for the bride, blessing her marriage in future, then he gives her a cup of palm wine (it is usually placed in a gourd) to find the man she intends to spend the rest of her life with. The bride along with her maidens then goes to find her groom who is hidden in the crowd, as she searches for him with the wine in her hand; she is beckoned by other men and the groom’s friends seated in the crowd to give them her wine. After searching him out, she then offers him the drink in her hand kneeling down. If he takes a sip, it signifies to the crowd that he is her husband, acceptance means they are officially man and wife. The groom and bride then dance to meet her parents who then pronounce blessings on them. The merriment begins and the couple is given gifts by friends and family.
Idu Uno comes immediately after Igba Nkwu , at this stage; the bride visits the groom’s home for the first time and she goes along with a maiden or her sister who isn’t married to keep her company. Before she begins her journey, the bride’s family gifts her with items she’ll need to start her new home, these include cooking utensils, bed-sheets, suitcases, boxes, sewing machine, bed, pillowcases, plates, clothes and other essential things she’ll need to begin their new life together. The bride’s sister or family can go back home after a few days to give feedback to her people.

Abigaelle M .............Can't you see that we (Nigerians/Igbos) have different Nose shapes?....Mine is NOT as GOOD as the Bride's or even the Groom's. She has narrow pointed Nose like the Actress Mama G (Patience Ozokwo). Yes 40% of Igbos DO NOT have such beautiful features. The TRUTH. And it hurts.
@Abi6903

It is very sad that you took european standard as a beauty standard: narrow pointed nose means that someone is beautiful but hey this is your opinion.

Abigaelle M ........That facial feature is COMMON ground for GOOD Looks. It is paramount, then Height , then NON Fatness, (Skin Colour is NOT important ). If you ADD White Skin Colour and Long Blonde Hair, you get a beautiful European/White person. If you ADD Black/Brown/Light Colour to it you get BEAUTIFUL Africans that can be this Bride, Mama G, Bianca Ojukwu.......Eritreans, Ethiopians, Somalians, Some Fulanis etc. If you take Height away from it (like 4 feet 7 inches total Height ), it fails to be beautiful...........Ask any person. I am done.
@Abi6903
@Abi6903 6 жыл бұрын
This is not true the aborigine people , papou people and melanesians have wider facial features and are still beautiful people. Only people narrow-minded will put hierarchy in facial features to decide what is beautiful and what is not and it is very sad.

It could be that the Father recommended a different financially RICHER Man for his Daughter Uchechi, BUT the Daughter disagreed and loves this Man Amobi better for some reasons ( He is NOT short, NOT fat, NOT ugly, ). Usually Fathers want a financially RICH Man for a Son in-law and NOT a Civil Servant with modest Wealth.

The beautiful woman made Edo attire look stunning on her. Clothes don't make a person it is the person that makes the clothes look good. You don't wear Edo clothing daily do you? You probably often wear clothing that are not Edo at all. Probably more often than you wear Edo clothing or jewelry. Even in your thumbnail, you are not wearing Edo clothes but feel you have a right to. So leave people to wear what they want especially as you probably wear western clothes on a daily basis that also originated from somewhere else. It's quite hypocritical of you tbh.

I found the recent weddings of the so called Igbo Traditional weddings with CORAL BEADS adorned all over the brides' heads and wearing blouses made of coral beads very interesting. I welcome it that THE EDO TRADITIONAL STYLE OF WEDDINGS have been copied mostly by the Igbos of South Eastern Nigeria. But traditionally the Igbos of South Eastern Nigeria did NOT dress their brides in such attire and regalia. So they should not claim it as theirs. It is not theirs. People from the Rivers State, Calabar people are endowed with lots of corals and use coral beads as well. The Edo people and Delta people who made up the former (Midwest Region of Nigeria) have the custom of wearing and adorning themselves with Coral beads at weddings, funerals and important ceremonies such as Chieftain and enthronement of Obas and Obis - but not in the Igbos from South Eastern part of Nigeria. So this is a modern borrowed identity from the Edo State people and Delta State people. The Igbos should go back to their history of traditional weddings and modernise it to reflect their culture and tradition and not copy or promote other people's culture. The Igbos of South Eastern Nigeria wore real elephant tusks as jewelleries on the ankles, necks and on their wrists. I am of the opinion that they should promote that culture. I know that real elephant tusks are very expensive and hard to come by. Then they should start to produce the imitation of elephant tusks as jewelleries to adorn their brides and bridegroom. Another thing that I found fascinating is the theatrical aspect of the entrance group of dancers at weddings. This is strange. Normally the celebrants, the bride and groom will open the floor for dancing at one stage but not with entourage at entrance to the hall with dancing troupes. It appears that the whole of African modern young people have rejected their cultural and traditional wedding ID. They are all doing similar thing as far as wedding is concerned in recent times. They all wear uniforms - men wore similar clothings and ladies wear similar clothings. They have all become spectacles and older people are watching. By the time they finished the wedding the bride and groom are tired especially where one of the celebrants is cocassian. The Yorubas of South West of Nigeria kept to their wedding traditions and culture and didn't deviate from their culture and tradition - whether or not one of the celebrants is cocassian. Sorry, but this the truth.

It’s not about beads in general it’s the type of beads (coral beads called ivie in edo) and the way it’s styled. This type of dressing was only restricted to the obas wives and the wives of dukes. In the last 2-3 decades it became allowed for all edo women to dress like this. This is NOT Igbo dressing. Search up igbo dressing 10 years ago. They were dressing like yorubas. Now they are copying edos. If you took ten minutes of your time to search this up on the internet you would know rather than typing nonsense.
