It's laughable how much better the German team was to the English one yet Alan Hansen seemed to think it would be a walkover for England. Anybody who at that point wasn't scared of Oezil hadn't been watching him play. From 2009-2013 he was one of the best players in the world.

As a massive England fan this was a well deserved hammering we got form Germany. Completely predictable as well. We were awful all tournament and Germany were very powerful and dynamic. It was a watershed moment as after this we never expected anything again

England had struggled during the group stages and now they were going to beat Germany? Hansen talks about England passing the ball well against Slovenia? These are paid pundits. Unbelievable. Hansens opening words … so far off reality, he really wasnt well prepared. Our team (Germany) was absolute worldclass in that tournament, it had massive potential, more than other german nationalteams who still reached the final like the ones in 1982, 1986 or 2002. We fans knew that exactly and i remember today, in 2022, that as a fan i faced that match against England in Southafrica 2010 completely calm and superoptimistic.

Describing this Germany as eminently beatable (containing Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Podolski, Klose etc.) is sheer arrogance.

I remember this live broadcast all too well. Hansen, Shearer, Harry, every one of them dismissed Germany. Germany were just a fly on the windscreen, a pushover, no threat. I had bookmarked the young Germany team of WC 2006 (who Hansen described here as 'average') to eventually win the World Cup (which they did in '14 with these same players). But what do I know about football, it's not like I won the league with Blackburn or the European Cup with Liverpool!

I think after Capello the FA must have thought we might as well lose with an English manager. Same result, just with an Englishman in charge. This is the problem with our mentality: “we are due a win v Germany.” Eh? Since when? Just sheer entitlement! You have to earn it on the field over 90/120 mins and if you don’t it comes down to a test of nerve of penalties. England have yet to earn it at the World Cup since 1966. This match wasn’t even close despite the usual moaning of whether Lampard’s goal should have been allowed (of course it should have) but I look at what happened afterwards and there was no real reaction from the England side.

Certainly wasn't an average Germany side, they'd reached the last 4, 4 years previous to that in 2006, finalists to a very strong Spain 2 years before in 2008 Euros. A lot of that starting 11 the summer before won the U21 Euros! England on the other hand were useless back then, very predicable in tournaments and spineless for a good 30 yeara prior

Hmm. Germany were in the Euro 2008 final whereas England never made it to the tournament. In the 2010 World Cup they were unlucky not to make the final and then 4 years later they won it. This was a brilliant Germany side which should have won more. I remember after this game Shearer said the Germans must think we are mugs by the fact they said England had the better team. Germany are probably wishing they had an international side like this today.

Watching this back is absolutely hilarious. I remember laughing at them even back then. This "Average" Germany team finished 3rd in the 2005 confederations cup and in the 2006 World Cup. They were also runners up in Euro 2008 as well a tournament England failed to qualify for. Germany went on to finish 3rd losing 1-0 to that great Spain team. I wonder what would had happened if that England team played Spain. What would the scoreline be?

Germany got to the Euro 2008 final, and England *failed* to qualify for even that, featuring most of "The Golden Generation". Along with a handful of the German players at that World Cup also winning the U21 European Championship the year prior, beating England 4-0 in that final by chance. Most of them would go on to become World Cup Champions at the next World Cup (2014), whilst England prattled down to getting beat by Iceland in Euro 2016.

this shows a big difference between England and Germany. For England playing Germany is a big thing. They have to dig up all the history. Be a bit racist. Be more than a bit condescending. For Germany playing England it is just another game. Sure the English media is a bit more obnoxious and Bild gets baited every time. But overall, just another team. I think Alan Hansen as a Scot was always on a bit of a wind up when he was a pundit during this era of England team. I think he knew full well the England team wasn’t good enough but was almost winding the English public up by saying how good we were.
