My favorite piano piece which is a reinterpretation of my favorite violin piece played by one of my favorite pianists. It doesn't get much better than this.

This performance reveals the chaconne's power through its lyricism. Most pianists stress the nobility with powerful chords and hard-charging scales and chords. It's exhausting, and more often that not, a series of episodes. The power comes from gradations from piano up to forte, rather than forte down to piano and back up. This interpretation is much more integrated than most, without goopy pedal. Four strings on five fingers.

Working on some of the most basic passages of this and feeling like I need to ice the left hand after 15 mins of practice....incredible to watch and hear. Making it look easy.. Wow.

I agree that it’s all about the hands - in theory - but in practice it’s the emotional and intellectual commitment of the player that really separates the wheat from the chaff. I’ve seen Levitt playing live about 15 times and what keeps pulling me back is his commitment. Everyone leaves feeling as if they’ve witnessed something unique and unrepeatable, - and they have.

I've listened to countless performances of this wonderful transcription of Bach's noble Chaconne and this one stands head and shoulders above all the rest for both technical accomplishment and, above all, interpretation. Perfection, in my book. Judging from this and his masterly performance of the Beethoven Diabelli Variations at last year's Hay-on-Wye festival, it is clear that this young man is a SERIOUSLY fine player and musician.

This guy is great. I’m not a fan of Brahms’ treatment of this piece, having listened to it Ciaccone countless times on the violin - the arrangement is muddy and he should have placed it an octave up like Bach wrote it. It would not be hard to slide your butt and the bench a foot to the right and then it would be feasible to play it as written.
