More Polygame Master (PGM) arcade carts! The Cave shooters released for this system were standalone PCBs that now often run in the thousand dollar range when available for sale. The arcade community and a few distributors have once again rekindled the fire and have begun supplying both knowledge and product by bringing these pricey arcade titles to market in the form of conversion cartridges.
UPDATE:
It's definitely my motherboard. Since the filming of this video I've been able to replicate the graphics errors several times with official cartridges. A new board is en route and I'll share findings once in hand.

Thanks Stew. I’m always trying to read and learn, it’s a WIP. My equipment is very basic and I really just have a camera and a cheap light, lol. Trying to squeeze every last drop out of that!

That’s definitely the way to go these days. No butchering of original carts. I think documentation is MUCH better now than when I made this video too.

I was thinking about getting a IGS PGM just for these cave games..and demon front. I've always loved dodonpachi, so it's nice to know they are so close to the orignal cave boards.

Pretty much identical. There was someone on a forum who owned the original board and the conversion and said he couldn’t tell any differences (apart from the vanilla version not being playable). Now that I got the board issue mostly sorted, I’d definitely recommend these as nice additions to the lineup.

I believe Darksoft said he would eventually do a multicart for this system as well. When that happens though? Who knows. Current project is CPS1.

Very nice man! The last few years I’ve been looking to get a Ketsui PGM conversion cart but had no luck finding one. I have noticed recently that sheepnova was selling some and now with your video showing you picked one up, I’m going to pull the trigger. Nice labels too. That is something I’ll be doing as well. Enjoy! Yes, these are the sheepnova carts. I don’t care how nerdy it sounds, but I’ve played these via emulator and it’s just a dramatically different experience on a vertical tube with those scanlines and a Seimitsu stick. Definitely worth it if you already have the hardware.

Scarlet Sprites I do have a supergun/crt/Tate setup using my AES stick. It will be more authentic playing this game on my PGM on that setup over the PS3 port which is good for HD.

Cool stuff man. Nothing wrong with conversion carts in my opinion as long as people don’t try to pawn it off as real. I just reviewed a metal slug aes conversion cart on my channel.

Yeah, selling conversion stuff as legit is a real dick move. At least with these the Cave games were never produced on cart so it’s pretty much impossible to pawn them off as real unless the buyer is completely clueless. For me it’s always the killing of a legit/original game that causes the anxiety.

Well for $50-$60 you can get a board, they aren’t too crazy price wise...yet. The conversion carts are kind of all over, $100-$150, but nothing terrible or shocking if you’re already in the arcade scene.

It’s a cool under the radar system, and the motherboard is generally cheap. The downside is, as I found out, they aren’t overly reliable.

Liked the share of your experiance, good to hear they play just like the pcb's... Maybe this will get to be more popular as time goes on and a bit cheaper to buy cool japanese SHUMPS for the masses.

Here’s hoping you get the graphical issues taken care of. Dodonpachi is one of my favorite Saturn titles, obviously never got to try the arcade version.

It emulates pretty well, I’d give it a try if you have a Pi or even a S/NES Classic. The issues aren’t the carts, it’s my board. I haven’t determined what exactly it is, but I’ve been able to replicate the issue on original carts now. I’ll fool with the board a little more and check some traces and solder joints, but I’ll likely end up grabbing another shortly.

Do these PGM converted carts have good dumps online? Could be useful when we get a PGM FPGA implementation, which seems not too far off now.

Nice. Me personlly, I've never had a problem with purchasing conversions or repros for that matter either. If it works and saves me money, I'm on it.

Yeah in this case it’s basically construct a repro cart, or pay $1k for the original board. I was never going to do the latter, so this was the next best option to run on original hardware.

I’m not a fan of conversations for the reasons stated. I’ve considered buying certain Neo Geo titles in the past but the sight of official boards with the guts ripped out and replaced just doesn’t seem right to me.

Relatively cheap compared to a lot of arcade stuff. The motherboards though, well, they are apparently as fragile as I’ve heard. Haha.

Does your copy of doj have a slight freeze when playing solo on 2p side? The slight freeze occurs after picking ship 'a' with exy. This seems to occur 60 to 70 percent of the time...

I know this video is old, but did you ever get these working? I've been interested in buying a pgm for these, but I've been apprehensive becuase of your problems. Emulation on these titles isn't as smooth as I want it to be lol.

There are newer version carts too, a better overall design based on findings from the guys at the AP forums. The issue I was having here was actually the cart connector on the PGM board. Swapping to a new board solved the issue.

Checkout Demon Front too. Knights of Valour 2: 9 Dragons and Oriental Legend are ok beat ‘em ups as well.

Funny, I bought these conversion carts recently as well, I have no problems with them! They have booted up just fine every time so far, and have been very happy with them. I wonder what is the problem you have?

It’s the main board, I’m pretty certain of it. I’ve now been able to replicate it with an original cart. I’m going to grab another PGM board and verify they are fine on that and then try to work on my current one.

It’s the board, not the carts. I’m working on repairing it and if that fails I’ll grab a new board. I’d like to have a Martial Masters as well. I saw a copy for $150 once and am mad at myself for not grabbing it.

Yes, I was able to solve. It was a damaged cart connector on the mainboard.

I only picked the system up because it was a cheap ($50) board to have as an arcade option. There are some decent PGM games though, these three are really worthwhile imo.

I’ve seen them before, but they’re usually expensive. It’s not a very common/mainstream system and documentation is tough to find on it. I suspect the best option would be to pair a board with a super gun.

@@ScarletSprites thanks man hey one more thing do you know anyone out in Harrisburg that sells pinball and arcade machines? Or neo geo carts. I currently have a deadlus converter. Man i sold my gold cab the smaller 2 slot cab i got from a guy in Delaware back in 2009. Would love to get a actual cabinet back i like the converter but definitely looking for any cabinet again.

These conversions are crap! 29l3211 in a 5v console. no level shifters, not even resistors. Just 2 diodes on the vcc line. It's bad for the flash itself, but also for the console. Same low quality as in nes and snes carts on aliexpress.
