IGT: Balancing the Faceting Handpiece

This video demonstrates the technique for balancing the faceting handpiece. This needs done when the machine is brand new and also sometimes if the machine is very old.
This process can take a few hours if your handpiece needs a lot of balancing.

On your recommendation, I picked up an ST-08 last year. Still learning, but it is a solid machine. I think I'll be passing it down to my children. I enjoy it even though I learned on mast machine. Thanks for sharing with the community!

I believe there should be a small correction on the first part of balancing the hand piece where you adjust the front and back. Cutting the table from opposite indexes will always create two facet if the 2 back legs are not balanced. Since you start with unbalanced back legs you will have two table facets coming in when cutting at 64 and 32. When the front and back legs are balanced these two table facets will meet in a line that will straight go from hand piece's front to back cutting across 16 and 48 indexes. Once you correct the back legs as per the step 2, then we will get one single table despite the index number you cut the table. Pls correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Justin. Thanks for the great information about balancing the handpiece. About four years I was able to find a used Imahashi machine. I am in Florida USA. The Imahashi and the Sterling machines are not common here therefore very few people have experience with setting them up or faceting with them. Balancing the handpiece is very basic but even the info on the internet from Imahashi does not explain or mention it. Thanks for the info. My hand piece was just a small amount out of of balance. Now I think it is in balance. This should help me a lot.Thank you very much.Vince

Thanks for taking the time to show how you tram the handpiece. Very nicely done. Have a couple of Raytech machines that I presume I should be able to do the same way. What type machine are you using and are/where they available for resale? The next time I do any faceting with the Raytech I'll see if I can get the handpiece trammed. What procedure would be necessary to tram/balance the platform if necessary. Thank you very much!

As you said emerald cut is more trixky so let's do a balancing on that kind of cut. Should be more accurate?

I have been wanting to buy my daughter a lot of cheap faceted gems to fill her treasure chest with. There are so many people selling like items online and these days.
