アルゼンチンとブラジルにまたがる広大な密林イグアス国立公園。その象徴がイグアスの滝。イグアスとは先住民の言葉で「大いなる水」を意味するが、その言葉通り世界一の水量を誇ります。全長3キロに渡り大小275もの滝が轟音を立てて流れ落ちるのです。流れ落ちる水の威力で玄武岩の台地は侵食され、岩の硬さの違いにより2段の滝が形成されました。滝の水煙が広範囲に密林を潤し数々の稀少な動植物の命を育んでいます。
1000km以上流れる大河イグアスが、大小275もの滝となり落下するイグアスの滝は水量世界一。最大の滝は幅150mのU字型で80mの落差を流れ落ちる「悪魔の喉笛」ですが、多い時には毎秒4万5000トンもの水が滝全体で流れ落ちた記録があります。

Iguazu National Park is a vast jungle that straddles Argentina and Brazil. Its symbol is Iguazu Falls. Iguazu means “great water” in the language of the indigenous people, and as the name implies, Iguazu Falls boasts the largest volume of water in the world. The falls are three kilometers long, with as many as 275 waterfalls of various sizes roaring down the rock face. The force of the falling water eroded the basalt plateau, creating two-tiered waterfalls due to the difference in hardness of the rocks. The spray of water from the falls moistens the jungle over a wide area and nurtures the lives of numerous rare plants and animals.
The world’s greatest falls, at 45,000 tons per second
Iguazu Falls is where the mighty Iguazu River, which flows for more than 1,000 km, falls into 275 waterfalls of various sizes. It is the world’s largest waterfall in terms of volume. The largest waterfall is the “Devil’s Throat,” a 150-meter wide, U-shaped waterfall with an 80-meter drop. Records show that at times, as much as 45,000 tons of water flow down all the waterfalls every second.
