Here's an overview of Ihagee Exacta VX made in 1954. I had to re-upload the video because KZfaq blocked it in some countries. Thank you for watching.

Eons ago, when I first saw a VX, I thought it was the best looking camera of its type. It is a watchmaker's delight with that long gear train shutter, self timer and other features. The camera must accept hundreds of lenses. That Ihagee got back in production at all after the horrific Dresden bombing says a lot about resilient Germans. I would love to add one to my collection of working cameras but they are such complex cameras that few actually are functional and fewer yet fully so. Kris, I enjoyed your video. Very seasoned and informing.

It was an exceptionally beautiful camera, and your one looks mint except the wavy shutter curtain. What made this camera so special to me was the super long shutter speed, I don't know of any mechanical camera can do longer than 1sec, what a marvel piece of German technology !

Very interesting video. I actually own one of these cameras. My grandfather bought it new in 1959-1960. I am fortunate that it is complete with 3 lenses, extension bellows, case, and both view fingers. It is unbelievably clean and several years ago I had it serviced. Unfortunately, when I got it back the timer no longer worked properly and the shutter curtain which needed to be replaced had a piece of tape put over the pinholes, which can occur with these shutters. If you know of a place that can actually service this camera, I would like to have it fixed and brought back to like new. Like you I shoot mostly medium format. I love the old cameras and the process of composing and shooting a picture using film.

Excellent review, thank you. A beautiful original design, in my opinion the winder on the left side feels naturel and right to me. I am right handed by the way!

Always cock the shutter before touching anything else, otherwise you might brake the mechanism. Don't forget that TOPCON lenses fit as well. If well maintained, this camera shall outlive you and a couple of future generations.

VX stands for varex and was a export model to the USA. On the Europian model stands varex. The using of VX in the USA was, because the company Argus claims the name varex already so they couldn't put the name on it, so that's why VX.

The Nikon F shape is actually a rough copy of the Contax D also known as the Pentacon F from 1952. look that one up. It set the basic looks for years to come.

it's not EEHIGA... it's IHAGEE, which was phonetic for IHG, standing for Industie und Handels Gesellschaft m.b.h.

Tony Zoccolillo it's very simple just spool film from right to left and coil it on the spool. When done close the lid and advance film twice and zero out the counter

I have my fathers Exakta V camera. It has a V and E at the bottom of the lens plate with a Primoplan 1:1.9/58 Meyer Götiltz Nr. 1109540 lens that has some dust hehind the glass. Is it worth being serviced / cleaned?
@krisb8781 Жыл бұрын
if you plan on using it sure, if not probably best to keep it as is and display it. Use it as a conversation piece

I have the same model Exakta (I just purchased) , but do not have the zero out knob next to the shot counter. Is there some other way to zero out?

I just found a exakta vxiia jhagee dresden at a yard sale. When I take a shot with it, the shutter closes but doesnt open back up inside.... Is there something I should be doing to re open it or is it broken? if its broken is there a way to fix that? Is there any harm in manually opening back up the shutter inside the camera and re attaching the lens and take another shot?

Sounds like the mirror is down. It will go up when you wind the camera

Odds are that the shutter is fine. What's wrong is that the guy doesn't know much about his camera. SLRs from the 1950s from Europe used a reflex mirror system which flipped up the mirror to take the photo, but did not return it to the viewing position until the shutter/film advance is cycled. This style of reflex mirror disappeared overnight once the Japanese introduced SLRs with so-called "rapid return" mirrors. Same basic idea for automatic apertures, which shut from wide open to selected shooting aperture when the shutter is released. The Exakta has lenses made for it from many different makers. They used pre-set apertures which had to be manually closed to shoot and reopened to view, semi-auto apertures which closed with shutter release, but required some sort of manual cocking to reopen, and fully auto-apertures, which closed to shoot and reopened thereafter.

I have this camera with the little case.... no lense though. I have been looking for someone that is in to photography that might see value in such a thing.

I have Ihagee Parvola Anastigmat 70 mm f/1:4,5 but no idea how to use it and where to get the 127 film.
@krisb87818 жыл бұрын
127 film can be purchased but it's not cheap consider spooling your own by cutting 120 film

Kris Bochenek Does the camera works the same as the one you introduced in this video? I want to try it. I understand basics of photography but this is black magic :D
@krisb87818 жыл бұрын
+Slashplite It works a bit different, but in the nutshell all cameras work the same. I suggest you try to find a manual for your camera and if all works the way it's supposed to, you can get some nice images, I'm sure.

You are really not treating the surface finish of your camera very well by sliding it around like crazy on that abrasive surface (any surface save felt is abrasive). The camera didn't arrive to you in that good a condition if people had been treating it like that through all those decades. You are not the owner of the an item such as this. You are the caretaker for the future.

This camera was a work horse, most of them are. Little pushing around on a cardboard piece is not going to hurt it. They are not beauty queens, they are made to be used and used and used. I appreciate your concern, but all my cameras are fine.
