iHome - Not iCrap - iH5 clock radio/iPod dock

The iPod dock is useless unless you have an old model that is compatible with it, but the iHome iH5 clock radio also features surprisingly good AM and FM radio reception and sound quality, and with its line level input, it can serve as a compact amplifier/speaker system. Newer models are compatible with newer mobile devices, and have even better-sounding speakers, but have an FM-only tuner.

After watching the video for a second time, I must say that I am truly impressed with not only the presence of an AM tuner, but also the fidelity, considering how AM is an afterthought on newer radios. The top of it seems so barren without the written instructions for hotel guests!

I have one of these too, and it works great to this day still. I got it back in 2008 from a local Linens 'N Things that was closing since the whole company was going bankrupt, and for $70 at that too. Not too bad of a price for getting it new at that time. And yes, the reception works very well on it. I have it up at my cabin in northern WI now since I've got newer ones back home as well as well as where I go to college in MN, and I remember one time I was playing around on the FM band on it late at night and I was able to pick up some very distant stations (101.3 KDWB and 100.3 KFXN from Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota). Then again, northern WI radio isn't too terribly crowded on either the FM or AM band, but still, that kind of pickup was amazing.

I believe this unit is circa 2005 or so.These exact clock radios are in a lot of hotels across america. I'd say, for a hotel room stereo, they're pretty good sounding. It's too bad your backlight isn't working too well.

I paid $5 also for the one in my AM DX video..great performance, and excellent sound..but the only drawback is the rotary encoders used for tuning and volume go bad and either work in reverse or intermittently. They can be taken out and cleaned but it is a chore opening the radio to do so.

While I'm the furthest thing from a battery chemist or designer out there, no two batteries are exactly alike, and one might run out before the other. If that happens, it's quite possible for the dead battery to be charged in reverse by others in circuit with it. That's what kills a lot of laptop battery packs. (This is why packages of batteries have a warning about mixing new and old units together, although I've only rarely seen it happen with conventional alkaline batteries.) Not a bad little unit overall, although I'm not crazy about backlit LCD displays on clock radios.

These days whenever I come across a clock radio with an electroluminescent backlight, such as Timex Indiglo, it is usually either totally dead, flashing on and off, or so dim that it would be difficult to see even in a darkened room. This one exhibits all three behaviors!

Kevin, I bought one of those iHome's iH5's after buying my iPod Classic 80GB. I thought it sounded great, much better than I was expecting. It was a very musical and rich sounding unit. A year later, I bought a second one but it had a remote with it. So I had one at home and one on my desk at work. They are both still working wonderfully! But now the battery on my iPod is starting to poop out. I can probably replace the battery myself but I assume that the iHome will continue to give me great music for many more years.

I have quite a few iHome products, all found at the thrift store. I also have an RCA iPod dock clock radio with an amber display that I got at a yard sale for $5 once upon a time. if you ever want an iPod Shuffle or an older hard drive-based iPod or one of two 2nd gen iPod touch 8GBs, let me know. I have a couple spares I can part with now that I have my iPod mini shacked up with a 32GB SDHC card in a CF adapter.
@SudosFTW
@SudosFTW 8 жыл бұрын
***** yes, but the issue here is that 128GB CF cards are hellishly expensive and an SDHC or SDXC card in an adapter provides ample bandwidth and power savings for it not to matter. 32GB was on mega sale during christmas time as were 64's, but I only got one of those because I needed something more than 16GB for the camera I'm currently using.

If you listen to a full-quality recording of the song closely, that's Roberta Flack singing "Where is the love..." in the background. It sounds intentional, not like some of the obvious flubs that were common in '60s music, like the "I saw her... I saw her again" in The Mamas & The Papas song.

That 8-track player of yours has a very clean sound, despite the possible tape speed issues!! Good idea to use it as a test audio source! Did you have a chance to test the "line out" jack? Maybe another improvement could be made, by plugging a small active subwoofer to that output, in order to get more bass... Of course, as long as plugging a cable to that output doesn't disconnect the radio's front speakers...

Most of these iPod dock speaker system in my experience are just plain junk. Although, I suspect that these are one of the better one. Moreover, if you got an iPod/iPhone that has a lighting port, you can just get a 30 pin to lightning adapter. Or even a 30 pin Bluetooth adapter and use your Bluetooth device, to steam though the unit.

I got a 5th gen 30GB iPod! May have to think about picking up a iHome. That reminds me, I need to order that special ribbon cable. Then I can stick 128/256GB CFSM card in to replace the hard drive. Better battery life, and way more storage then designed for. CFSM = IDE >:D PS: RockBox is awesome, install it on your old iPod and give it new life. Adds support for FLAC, WMA, OGG Vorbis and I'm nearly 100% certain Dolby Digital AC3 audio. It can also emulate a USB keyboard while charging, and control a media player or web browser in either multimedia or browser keypad mode. Seriously, using the iPod to control a media player without closing a fullscreen game is epic if you don't have a multimedia keyboard.

Only compatible with the older iPod models? No wonder I see so many of these, and other iPod docks at the thrift store! I'm amazed it works so well too. With that amount of yellowing already, I wonder what it will look like in 20 years? (Or maybe it just came from a smoking environment, since nicotine permanently stains some things, no matter how well it's been cleaned.) I also find with my GE clock/radio that AM sounds better than FM, and FM is way too bright. That's probably also why your 8 track sounds so good on it! :-) (even though the mechanism needs a good lube job, but that's easy. My Pioneer developed the exact same issues before I lubricated it; slowing down slightly when changing tracks, and the head not shifting properly.)

+wilkes85 Actually, if you want to use this with a newer model, you can get yourself one of those 30-pin to Lightning adapter. Believe it or not, despite Apple's new iPhones having that newer style connection in Lightning, there are still a ton of accessories out there that are made for the now defunct 30-pin connector.
@uxwbill
@uxwbill 8 жыл бұрын
+wilkes85 Apple changed the source of power to USB and five volts on later iPods, while the 30 pin connector remained the same. Some iPods fully support both methods of communication and charging, others only support charging over Firewire and the last models to use the 30 pin connector didn't support Firewire at all. That's where the problem with a lot of these iPod docks and radios comes in: any iPod with a 30 pin connector can play through them, but not all of them can charge their battery.

It's like a recipe. If you want to know what the rate the science is of which chemical and type discharge is, I would check out this page: batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/discharge_methods It has a nice detail explanation and has a visual, which helped me a lot. I could run the line output to my PC if I want to record something off the radio. and lol at the 8 track playing thru this thing. I've seen people playing iPods on 1940s radios. I stayed at a hotel one time and they had these as the alarm clock. I have a green iHome2go speaker and it ate up batteries so I did this to it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p910hseex9SrnI0.html 9:52 I have seen the negative voltage phenomenon. I have tons of used batteries and I run them in small LED lights and after the light is really dim sometimes I test them and they show negative values I guess the chemicals reverse themselves or something. Nice iHome, I will have to look for one of these at the salvation army store.

Don't know for certain, but batteries of different types (alkaline and carbon-zinc mixes, for example) have different characteristics, which may lead to the uneven wear (something the batteries warn of themselves). Mixing NiMH/NiCad and non-rechargeable batteries sounds like a recipe for disaster, that's for sure.

I love how that "stupid ode to Canada" is *nothing* like Canada and I just find it a public embarrassment.

So do you get milk in a bag or not? I hear that's mostly an Eastern thing.

Well I do live in Eastern Canada (Nova Scotia to be exact) which is basically the most eastern point of Canada, and yes you can buy milk in bags but there 8 litres and are primarily for cooking or doing anything that requires large amounts of milk so most people buy normal containers or jugs.

At least you have decent AM radios over there. Here, all AM radios are either news, folklore or Christian. Nothing else.

I hate apple mostly because while I love iTunes and I loved my iPod Nano (one of the simple square touch screen ones)while it worked, the stupid power button broke and I can only turn it on if it is docked and you can't open it up to fix it. I casually listen to the radio on my Sansa Clip+ anyway, might as well get one. Definitely interested in iHome if they have models with CD players. Good excuse to go thrifting at any rate.

Some bleach and water will take that yellowing out of the plastic.

the reason for the display not lighting up is the power brick is not supplying enough power if you use a 15v power supply it will work fine
