For US and Canadians, it's an amazing tournament when they win and it's whatever, the best players aren't there, when they lose. Well, guess what, the best players for most nations aren't there, the best from each nation play in NHL playoffs. There are many great players attending though and this is the best regural international tournament there is. Overseas nations come up with their random exclusive World Cup event excluding some of the greatest hockey nations and will tap themselves on shoulders when they get a medal competing only against 3 other teams:D Next time, make it 2 and you'll all get a medal. No need to complain then:)

You really cant use this argument while US and CAN have 100% of players from NHL while most of the EU teams have 1-2 lines fully made from local leagues of Europe... Means, that US and CAN have "best of the best" of the world, since NHL is considered the highest you can get as a player...

@vlads.3192 You realize that any team from the NHL, even if you use their weakest players would under normal circumstances destroy any European club. The money invested in any NHL club is absolutely ridiculous even if you compare it to thr money available to all Czech clubs combined. What you're saying is a non-argument.

82% of all television broadcast in czech republic was watching the finals - 3 milion people out of 10.5~ mil, while another at least 500k was watching from pubs, bars, townsquares... I sometimes wonder why we dont have NHL equivalent in europe yet, when we can pull the numbers.

I think there is potential for something like this to happen but I think more time still has to pass. Especially with the monetary attraction of the NHL it’d be very difficult to attract the world’s best. A potential NHL Europe division I think also could happen in the future but of course would be a logistical nightmare and would likely need to be an entire Europe conference especially with all the time change. Would be tough to put together as all teams would have to happen in a year severely depleting the talent in the league

Mainly because North American hockey doesn’t really consider this tournament to be worth it. The Olympics are the only IIHF Men’s tournament that the NHL will make an exception for, and they haven’t even done that for the last 2.

He definitely wasn’t very good early and my thought is it carried through his play in the playoffs. The slash on the Slovak player in the quarters more or less got him benched in the Swiss game and then the Sweden game was just a disaster all around. I think it kind of ties back to the whole problem for Canada in this tournament with just not really giving a damn about how they played but oh well… always next year I guess

@@onthefly1515 I think it all comes from Canada (and the US) underestimating their opponents. Like in all the interviews you can hear them talking about gold medal being the goal and everything else is a failure, but when push comes to shove it feels like the team doesn't have the same hunger and drive for the medal like many european teams do. It's insane that players like Bedard and Cozens lose to players from european hockey leagues. I know it isn't only about the individuals but that's exactly what I'm pointing at. The hunger to win and team chemistry are both very important aspects in terms of how the team plays. You can't just get a gold medal without putting in the effort thinking that you'll just shit on these guys because you're better individually.

why north american players usually dont go for IIHFs? like top players?
@onthefly1515
@onthefly1515 21 күн бұрын
For a couple reasons. First one is the NHL season ends as this tournament starts so any bumps and bruises from the 82 game season needs recovery. The second one is the NHL playoffs are still ongoing meaning the best teams (best players) are still in their season. The third one, and might be the biggest one, is that in NA, the Worlds aren’t as big a deal as other IIHF tournaments as most of us are either watching the NHL playoffs or with the games at an inconvenient time (10am-2pm EST Monday-Friday) unable to watch. Without the support most players don’t have the desire to play and in turn don’t go. Those are just some of the main ones but it probably depends more on the individual player

@@onthefly1515 i dont think so , its a NHL "problem" , you know , IIHF tournament is running during NHL's play offs, so more than half of teams are off. So there are many top players available.(for example, Pasternak came during the tournament after Boston failed in PO) Also players from Europe are comming for it often after their nhl team is off the PO. You can see many players from sweden , finland or czechia (from NHL).Its like ,for Slovakia (my country) , every player from NHL that can , is comming. ( we dont have so many players there now :D ). Canada and USA has majority of players in NHL teams , but we can barrely see some top players in IIHF from USA or Canada (even they are not playing PO). Even when tournament is sheduled to canada. Its just sad. Beside my team (slovakia) i am fan of USA and Canada team, i like their game play , it always has so energy. But i cannot see players like Crosby etc there :( as you said, it seems like NA players have no desire to represent their country.

It is partly true what you’re getting at. There is certainly a culture in NA that the World Championships don’t really matter. My favourite stat from these past few days is that Swiss, Czech, Swedish, and Finnish viewership is higher than both Canada and USA. For reference, Canadian viewership is normally around 60% with US around 30% with the rest being spread across the European countries. I feel this stat is especially relevant when it comes to NA teams as it goes to show just how little NA countries care about the tournament. Now that’s not to say there aren’t people who care about it. There are plenty of hockey fans who are complete diehards for this tournament. But in general, the lack of care translates into the players and shows in the selection process. The Euro teams passion showed on the ice in this one and the results were all well earned!
